21、Thomas Mayfield had a major problem to solve in his fifth-grade classroom.
“I’m not good at adding. I don’t know how to regroup or borrow. I’m not good at subtracting (减法). Or I don’ t know my facts yet, and I’ m a fifth-grader, ” Mayfield’ s students used to tell him. The 42-year-old maths teacher from Fort Worth, Texas, knew it was important to try something new, especially because most of his students were also struggling outside of the classroom. “Single parent homes, parents put in prison, low financial stability-a lot of misfortunes that were going on, ” he said.
To reach students in a way that was familiar and inviting, he brought rap music to the classroom. Mayfield played an instrumental beat to a rap song. He got his students excited. Then they started to rap about decimal(十进位)point places. “Let’ s start with the tenths. Like a dime to a dollar, there’s 1 out of 10. Then we move to the hundredths, one part out of many. One out of 100, we call that a penny. . . “ rapped Mayfield and students.
Pareece Morehouse, one of Mayfield’s former students, is now in tenth grade and loves old-school rap. Before Mr. Mayfield’s class, Morehouse didn’t like maths and struggled with it. But pairing the difficult subject with music was game-changing for her.
“I can recall myself at home doing homework and just singing the song in my head, helping me understand, ” Morehouse said. “It was really a great way to help me make it through maths. ”
“Students will produce work if you reach them where they are and take notes on what they’re interested in, whether that’s music, art or sports. It’s important to use things that resonate (共鸣)with them, ” said Mayfield.

22、A huge lake of salty water appears to be buried deep in Mars, scientists reported this week. The presence of water raises the chances of finding life on the red planet. The discovery is based on observations by a European spacecraft. It has excited experts.Water is necessary for life, and scientists have long hoped to prove that it is present on Mars.
Cassie Stuurman is a geophysicist at the University of Texas. In 2016,she found evidence of a huge ice deposit(沉积)on Mars.“If these researchers are right, this is the first time we’ve found evidence of a large water body on Mars.”Stuurman said.Researchers are not yet sure how deep the area of water is.So,they cannot say whether it is an underground pool,or just an area of soft and wet soil.
In order to find the water,Italian researchers examined radar signals. The signals were collected over three years by the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft. The results suggest that a 20-kilometer-wide water body lies below ice that is 1.5 kilometers thick. They believe the area is close to the planet’s southern pole.
Mars is very cold, but salt in the water may have kept it from freezing. It is the same as when you put salt on a road to prevent ice from forming. The water would be extremely cold, right at the point where it’s about to freeze. And it would be salty.Such conditions are not ideal for life to form. But,she said there are bacteria on the earth that have been able to survive in similar conditions.
Mars has been a popular planet for exploration, with some groups placing instruments on its surface and others examining it from space. In May,NASA launched another spacecraft, the InSight Mars lander which will dig deep into the data under the surface after it reaches a flat area of the planet in November.

【3】What will the InSight Mars lander do when it reaches Mars?
A. Dig a hole to protect the lander itself.
B. Explore the surface of Mars.
C. Gather information under the surface of Mars.
D. Examine Mars from space.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A. Life used to exist on Mars.

C. Mars will be the humans’second home.
D. Water is buried beneath Mars’surface.
23、For the past three weeks, students across India’s capital have been attending a new course: happiness. The Delhi government introduced “happiness classes”. 【1】. In a country that uses normal testing to determine student success, offers a limited number of seats in top universities and sets high expectations, educators have been seeing mental health effects. 【2】. He said, “It will address the growing concern, which is that levels of happiness and well-being are decreasing.”
“We have given best-of-the-best talents to the world,” Sisodai said, according to The Washington Post. “【3】. We have been successful so far. But have we been able to deliver best-of-the-best human beings to society, to the nation?”
The Washington Post says children came out of their first happiness class with some excitement. “We should work happily,” 11-year-old Aayush Jha, a seventh grader at a public school in Delhi, told the paper. “When you work sadly, your work will not be good.”
Sisodai hopes to deliver these tools to help students live more happily inside and outside of the classroom, whether or not they’re achieving their academic standards. “I don’t know if happiness can be learned, but yes, it can be practised,” he says. “【4】.”
One in four Indian children aged 13 to 15 struggles with low spirits, the World Health Organization reported last year. As journalist Susan Brink reported, “The government has made changes after noticing that some young people under great stress to do well in school tended to commit suicide (自杀) if they felt they did poorly.” “In South India, they observed higher suicide rates after exam periods among schoolchildren who failed,” Alexandra Fleischmannn, a project coordinator for the WHO’s Preventing Suicide report, told Brink. “【5】, and that reduced suicides.”

24、Every country may have to consider what, if anything, to do about “global warming”. We should understand that the oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true.
Perhaps the most inconvenient fact is the lack of global warming for well over 10 years now. This is known to the warming establishment, as one can see from the 2009 “Climategate” email of climate scientist Kevin Trenberth: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is an irony that we can’t.” But the warming is only missing if one believes computer models where so-called feedback involving water vapor and clouds greatly amplifies the small effect of CO2. The fact is that CO2 is not a pollutant and it is a key component of the biosphere ( 生物圈)’s life cycle. Plants get better growth with more of it and part of the increase of agricultural yields in the past century certainly came from additional CO2 in the atmosphere.
Although the number of the scientists who are publicly opposed to the claim is growing, many young scientists secretly say that while they also have serious doubts about the global-warming message, they are afraid to speak up for fear of not being promoted or worse.
Why is there so much passion about global warming? There are several reasons, but a good place to start is the old question “Cui bono?”, or the modern update, “Follow the money”. Alarmism (危言耸听) over climate is of great benefit to many, providing government funding for academic research, and thus those people who benefit from this fiercely defended their dogma (信条) and the privileges it brought them.
Every country should support rational ( 合理 的) measures to protect and improve our environment, but it makes no sense at all to back expensive programs that turn away resources from real needs and are based on alarming but shaky claims of “incontrovertible” evidence.
【1】What can we infer about the author’s opinion on global warming?
A. Global warming hasn’t happened in the latest 10 years.
B. Global warming has become an urgent problem these years.
C. Global warming has worsened a little bit in the recent years.
D. Global warming has never happened since measures were taken.
【2】Which of the following statements about CO2 does the writer probably agree with?
A. CO2 greatly affects the global warming.
B. CO2 makes crops more productive.
C. CO2 involves water vapor and clouds.
D. CO2 is the most important part of the biosphere.
【3】Why is there so much passion for global warming?
A. Because t is a good chance for young scientists to be promoted.
B. Because the scientists want to have an insight into the problem.
C. Because the government values the problem and tries to solve it.
D. Because some people can greatly benefit from the research about it.
【4】What’s the writer’s attitude toward the programs to protect and improve our environment?
A. To support all the programs as long as they are beneficial.
B. To support cheap programs instead of expensive ones.
C. To support the programs that are necessary and reliable.
D. To support those programs that use less money and resources.
