二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Like most people, you have probably lost count of the number of perfect-looking shoes you have thrown away simply because the rubber soles (橡胶鞋底) are broken. In addition to the expense, it is also harmful to our environment. Now, thanks to a revolutionary self-healing 3-D printed rubber material, broken shoe soles may be a thing of the past.

The magical polymer (聚合物) is developed by the researchers at the University of Southern California’s (USC) and the University of Connecticut (UConn) . The team, led by USC Assistant Professor Qiming Wang, created it through a process called photopolymerization, which uses light to solidify the liquid used to create 3-D printed plastic. The researchers found that adding the right amount of oxidant (氧化剂) to the liquid allowed the 3-D polymer to heal (愈合) without slowing down the hardening process.

“When we gradually increase the oxidant, the self - healing behavior becomes stronger, but the photopolymerization behavior becomes weaker,” explained Wang. “There is competition between these two behaviors.”

The team, who published the findings in the journal NPG Asia Materials on February 1st,2019, state that the repair time can be reduced by increasing the room temperature. “If you just put a broken shoe on a bench at room temperature, the rubber will heal itself in six to eight hours,” Wang said. “If you apply heat at maybe 60℃, that expedites the healing process to about two hours.”

Given the material s huge potential, it is not surprising to hear that Wang and his team have been approached by several shoe-making companies eager to be the first to use the technology, which is still in the early stages. Once perfected, the scientists also hope to apply the technique to hard plastics that can be used to create self-healing toys, electronics, vehicle parts, and, if Wang has his way, even tires.

【1】How do the researchers make 3-D printed plastic self- heal?

A.By changing the amount of light used.

B.By raising the temperature at which it is used.

C.By increasing the hardening speed of the liquid.

D.By adding the proper amount of oxidant to the liquid.

【2】What can be inferred from the text?

A.The creation of 3-D printed plastic doesn’t need light.

B.The surrounding temperature determines the speed of healing.

C.Many shoe making companies got the right to use the technology.

D.Throwing away broken shoe soles has been a thing of the past.

【3】What does the underlined word “expedites” mean?

    A.Strengthens.

    B.Delays.

    C.Accelerates.

    D.Worsens.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

A.Self - healing shoes may be in our future.

B.3-D printing technology makes a difference.

C.Self - healing technology will serve many fields.

D.A revolution of rubber soles has changed our life.

  • 22、Like international travelers anywhere, foreigners visiting the United States from other countries can be confused by some of what they encounter. Fortunately, their fellow travelers have plenty of advice. Here are some specially good travel advice from around the world.

    From Italy:

Tipping is filled with misunderstanding. Q. Is it true that I have to “force” to tip at all? A. It is not mandatory to tip, however, it is strongly recommended, because in many cases it is the only entry of workers. Generally in a restaurant, in the cab, and in many places where there is a service tip is 15%. Since the bill that will explain you exactly the city tax of 8.875%, is sufficient to double that sum, without bothering to do the calculations. In the hotel you leave two dollars per day per person cleaning. Obviously you do not leave tips in places like McDonalds or Starbucks.

    From China:

Americans love to follow rules, even when no one is looking. “Americans are such strict rule followers. I witnessed this once sitting on the sidelines of a high school dodge ball game. To me, it was ridiculous, a little violent, and very American. It struck me that my classmates followed the rules of the game so strictly. Even when no one noticed that a person had been hit and he could have kept playing, he voluntarily gave himself up and left the game. I was deeply impressed by how much people honored the rules even when they are not seen.”

    From Russia:

Gifts are not a big deal. And did you know bribery (行贿) was illegal? “Gifts: Americans do not expect them. On the contrary, an unexpected gift while conducting business can put an American in an awkward position. Such things for Americans suggest exchange of commercial.

Business gifts in the U.S. are not acceptable. Moreover, they often cause suspicion. Americans fear that they could be interpreted as a bribe, and in the United States that is strictly punishable by law.”

    From Japan:

Nobody is impressed by how much you can drink. “In the U.S., they do not have a sense of pride if they drink a large amount. Rather, if you drink a lot, there is a sense that you cannot manage yourself, and you can lose respect from those around you. Being drunk doesn't excuse your actions, and to drink alcohol habitually is a sign of alcoholism. Alcoholics are seen as mentally weak, and are avoided by society due to their inability to have self control.”

1What does the passage mainly tell about?

    A. Cultural diversity.   B. Cultural differences.

    C. Cultural revolution.   D. Cultural construction.

2Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “mandatory” in Para. 3?

    A. Required.   B. Forbidden.

    C. Permitted.   D. Arranged.

3According to the passage, what are Americans most likely to do?

    A. Tipping everywhere.   B. Sending a surprising business present.

    C. Drinking a lot.   D. Obeying the game rules.

4Which word do the international travelers probably use to describe Americans?

    A. Confident.   B. Self-disciplined.

    C. Selfless.   D. Generous.

  • 23、Young dolphins, within the first few months of life, display their creativity by creating a unique sound. These bleats, chirps and squeaks amount to a novel possession in the animal kingdom — a label that conveys an identity, comparable to a human name.

These labels are called signature whistles(标志哨声), and they play an essential role in creating and keeping relationships among dolphins. While the development of a signature whistle is influenced by learning from other dolphins, each whistle still varies in volume, frequency, pitch(音高) and length.

The scientists found dolphins who live in regions with more seagrass have signature whistles that are higher in pitch and shorter in length when compared to those who live in areas where the seafloor is muddier. Meanwhile, dolphins in smaller groups have whistles that change pitch more often than dolphins in larger groups.

In 2013, researchers discovered that dolphins imitate another’s signature whistle to re-establish contact, at times adding parts of their signature whistle to the call. Moreover, in 2018 a study on male bottlenose dolphins(宽吻海豚) found that they keep their “names” into adulthood just like females—it was previously thought males abandoned their signature whistle to adopt the same whistle as their alliance(同盟) groups.

Dolphins can remember other dolphins after 20 or more years without contact by remembering their whistles, said Jason Bruck, an assistant professor at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Scientists analyzed 188 hours of recorded acoustic data collected by different research groups from 2006 to 2020. These sounds were recorded at six sites across the Mediterranean Sea, which is divided into west and east basins. There is genetic variation(差异) between eastern and western dolphin populations. Accordingly, the eastern and western basins were used as proxies(替代指标) for genetic variation.

The team extracted 168 individual whistles from the recordings and analyzed their acoustic features in relation to a few factors: precise location where the whistle was recorded, whether or not this was in the eastern or western basin, the local ocean environment and population demographics.

Ultimately, the scientists found that location only partially affected whistle variability.

Meanwhile, the environmental conditions and demographic characteristics did appear to strongly influence signature whistles—findings that align with the “acoustic adaptation hypothesis(声学适应假说),” the idea that animals acoustically adapt their vocalizations to their local conditions to optimize the purpose of their sounds. The study claims these are the foundational influences on signature whistle variability.

【1】What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.What determines the dolphin group size.

B.What influences the differences among signature whistles.

C.How dolphins produce the signature whistles at high rates.

D.How signature whistles convey information about identity.

【2】What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

    A.Dolphins influence one another.

B.Dolphins struggle to rejoin social groups.

C.Male dolphins repeat whistles to attract female ones.

D.Signature whistles are unique to bottlenose dolphins.

【3】What’s special about dolphins according to Jason Bruck?

A.They innovate their specific sounds to hunt.

B.They behave in the same way as humans.

C.They are stimulated to learn from other dolphins.

D.They are capable of long-term social recognition.

【4】Why do scientists analyze the recorded acoustic data of dolphins?

A.To explore if signature whistles can be identified.

B.To investigate the living environment of dolphins.

C.To study what factors influenced signature whistles.

D.To identify the relationship between regions and genes.

  • 24、JOHANNESBURG—They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad(蟾蜍) has joined that club of clever survivors.

South Africans are shocked at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town, after jumping into a porcelain candlestick(烛台) that was made there. South African officials reportedly planned to put down the creature, fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.

But the toad got a last-minute pardon. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal shelter, after officials decided to find a way to let the toad live. The two-hour flight was a breeze compared to the trip from China, a long way of many weeks and thousands of kilometers across the Indian Ocean.

Airline spokesman Hein Kaiser said the toad got “first-class treatment”, sitting in a transparent plastic container with escort Brett Glasby, an animal welfare inspector. There was even a ceremony, in which the toad’s boarding pass was handed to Glasby.

“He was the star of the show on the flight,” Kaiser said of the amphibious(两栖的) passenger. “I think every passenger stopped to have a look.”

On landing in Johannesburg, the toad was brought out of its container for a celebrity-style photo shoot. Observers said the brown toad seemed like a cool customer. It belongs to the Asian Toad species, which breeds during the monsoon(季风) season. It is believed to have survived the trip from China by hardening its skin to prevent it from drying out, and also by slowing its breathing and heart rate—methods that help the species survive in times of drought.

“We’ve had snakes in imported timber and scorpions(蝎子) in fruit. We were called because the toad was right inside the candlestick, and we had to break it to get it out” Glasby, the inspector, told The Star, a South African newspaper.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

    A. Asian toads can’t get used to the life in South Africa.

    B. South Africa ignores the protection of animals.

    C. An Asian toad gets a new home in South Africa.

    D. Workers shipped a toad to South Africa on purpose.

【2】If the toad is released into the wild, ________.

    A. it will make the locals feel shocked

    B. it will lose its life in the wild

    C. it might flee into another country

    D. it might harm the native species

【3】The toad was able to arrive in South Africa alive ________.

    A. because it formed hard skin to protect itself

    B. because it escaped all attacks and hunts

    C. because it used to stop its breath in winter

    D. because it was lucky to be given a chance

【4】It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

    A. a candlestick is the best place for a toad

    B. droughts make toads live longer

    C. sometimes animals are transported accidentally

    D. no one has seen such a big toad in Africa

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

US psychotherapist(精神治疗师) Virginia Satir (1916-1988) once said: “We need four hugs a day survival. We need eight hugs a day maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” She believed that hugging was necessary and important. Researchers have found scientific evidence that backs up her beliefs. According to a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science, receiving a hug can reduce stress and help protect us from illness.

In the study, researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the US invited 404 healthy adults to participate in interviews about how often the experienced conflicts in their daily lives, as well as how many hugs they received within a period of two weeks. These participants were intentionally exposed to cold viruses during the interview.

According to the research, people who received hugs on the same days when they experienced conflicts tended to report fewer negative feelings during the following days. They have also found that people who received hugs were less stressed out. The physical contact that we get through hugging especially loved ones, is a “marker of intimacy(亲密) and helps generate the feeling that others are there to help in the face of adversity(困境)”, according to Scientific American People feel more comfortable and relaxed after hugging.

The researchers have also found that the more hugs people get, the less likely they are to catch colds, Science Daily noted. When people receive hugs, they release more oxytocin(后叶催产素), which is also known as the “love hormone”. According to the researchers, this hormone can decrease one’s heart rate and lower blood pressure. This can put people into a state of emotional well-being. When people are in this state, their immune systems become stronger.

Of course, hugging is not the only way to comfort others. But physical contact like hugging can comfort people without “making any judgments (about right or wrong)”, Michael Murphy from CMU told Time.
