二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   My favorite novel is Albert Camus's The Plague (鼠疫). It was published in 1947, after Word War II.

On the surface, it's a story about an Algerian coastal town threatened by a mysterious plague. But the symbolic idea works on the concrete presentation of a metaphysical (形而 上学的)problem, which is the cruel fact of suffering. Like the plague, it's just a thing that happens in the world whether we want it to or not. Camus's novel asks if we can think of suffering not as an individual burden but as a shared experience — and maybe turn it into something positive.

The key is to recognize the universality of suffering. A plague is an extraordinary event and the horror it results in is extraordinary, too. But suffering is anything but extraordinary. Every day you leave the house, something terrible could happen. The same is true for all. All of us arc subject to forces over which we have no control.

A pandemic (大流行病)forces us to think about our responsibilities to the people around us. The hero of The Plague is a committed doctor named Rieux. From the very beginning, Rieux devotes himself to resisting the plague that united its victims. Each character in the story is defined (刻画)by what they do when the plague comes. No one escapes it, but those who reduce the suffering of others are the most fulfilled. The only villains are those who cannot see beyond themselves. The plague, for these people, is either an excuse to flee or an opportunity to make profits. Because they can't see that their condition is shared, a spirit of unity is completely   foreign to them. And that blindness makes community impossible.

At the very end of The Plague, Camus stated his philosophy that the struggle against suffering is never over for good. The plague will return, and so will everything else that upsets humans. But the point of the book is that a shared struggle is what makes community possible in the first place.

A pandemic, terrible though it is, highlights our mutual interdependence in a way that only tragedy can. The beauty of The Plague is that it asks the reader to map the lessons of the pandemic onto everyday life. The principles that drive the hero, Rieux, are the same principles that make every society worthwhile —understanding, love and unity.

If we learn these lessons, in a moment of crisis, we'll all be better off on the other side of it.

1What is the symbolic idea of The Plague?

A.An individual burden. B.A positive experience.

C.A universal suffering. D.An extraordinary event.

2What does the underlined word mean?

    A.The blind. B.Businessmen. C.Foreign victims. D.Wrongdoers.

3What is the purpose of this text?

    A.To introduce a book. B.To solve a social problem.

C.To remember a writer. D.To express an opinion.

  • 22、   Sucking blood is a risky business. At least for the female mosquitoes that need these nutrients to nurture their developing eggs. Not only do these bugs have to find a suitable blood donor, but once they've had their fill, they have to be able to escape undetected—to avoid the big swat. How they finesse this stealthy departure has just been revealed in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Feasting(饱餐) on an unsuspecting mammal can double a mosquito's body mass. So how does a fully loaded female heave that added bulk off the skin of her host without triggering its pressure sensors and bringing on that fateful slap? To find out, Florian Muijres of Wageningen University in The Netherlands and his colleagues used cameras that record 13,500 frames per second to capture the takeoff maneuvers of 63 blood-fed malarial mosquitoes.

What they discovered is, when it comes to a soft yet speedy getaway...for female skeeters, the wing's the thing. With a wingbeat frequency of about 600 beats per second...the insects are able to lift themselves lightly off their host. That approach is the opposite of the one favored by most other winged things, says Muijres.

"When most flying animals when they take off, like birds or a fly for, example, they first use their legs to push off very hard, and then when they are in the air, then they start beating their wings and generate aerodynamic lift(气动升力) to be able to fly away. Mosquito does it the other way around. It first starts beating its wings and through the aerodynamic forces these wings generate, their body is being lifted off from the substrate. And then they do gently also push down with their long legs to be able to further power their liftoff. But these forces that are being generated by the legs are relatively small."

In fact, the faint flutter of a mosquito's wings produces less than one third of the force exerted by similar-sized but much less subtle fruit flies as they shove off in search of another banana. And even on a full stomach, these bloodsuckers are stunningly fast, says Muijres. "So takeoff phase takes only about 30 milliseconds, which is 10 times faster than how fast we can blink our eye." And they're gone before we know what hit us. And before we can hit them.

1What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.How mosquitoes get nutrients for their developing eggs.

B.How mosquitoes can find their suitable blood donors

C.How mosquitoes escape undetected after sucking blood.

D.How the female mosquitoes find their perfect partners.

2What plays the most important part in helping mosquitoes escape?

    A.Their legs B.Their ears C.Their mouths D.Their wings

3Mosquitoes’ takeoff approach is different from that of most other winged insects in that________.

    A.mosquitoes are lighter than them

B.mosquitoes are keen on sucking blood

C.mosquitoes take off first with wings and then legs

D.mosquitoes take off through the aerodynamic forces

4From what Muijres said, we know that mosquitoes’ escape speed is _________.

A.extremely fast B.equal to that of our blink

C.faster than that of fruit flies D.greatly affected by their full stomach

  • 23、We all have a to-do list. Like you, mine seems to be growing every day instead of becoming shorter. But now I am going to cover three areas and tell you what not to do.

    【1】

You're never going to finish everything on your to-do list. 【2】 You should think about the Pareto principle. 20% of your tasks will produce 80% of your results. Concentrate on them. There are other important tasks that will need to be done but they don’t necessarily need to be done by you. Let’s say you take up consulting work at $150 per hour but you have some bookkeeping to do. 【3】 Why not pay someone $55 per hour to do your bookkeeping so you can earn $150 per hour?

Don’t leave each day to chance.

Does your day fly by without you even realizing where the hours are gone? Have you considered creating a morning or an evening ritual (惯例)? There may be a different solution for you but I am particularly protective of my mornings—I wake up early, exercise and write. Others who keep a journal at the end of the day may plan out their next day. 【4】 It’s important to structure your day as this will help you get more done to achieve your goals.

Keep it simple! This will help you organize your tasks in order of priority (优先), and you won’t feel overwhelmed looking ahead at tasks for tomorrow, next week, or next month. Be realistic about what you can accomplish in 24 hours.

Don’t allow others to steal your time.

【5】 Stop answering every random call or accepting a meeting request that doesn’t have a specific schedule. Actively guard your time and stop the timewasters from eating into your productivity. When you do this, people will both respect you more and value your time more.

    A.Don’t try to do everything.

B.Either of these might work for you.

C.There’s always something added to it.

D.This work is worth maybe $55 per hour.

E.Don’t waste your time looking back on what you’ve lost.

F.Your time is valuable and you should treat it as much.

G.Finishing my to-do list has become one of my most important tasks.

  • 24、   When Amanda Wanklin and Michael Biggs fell in love, they didn't realize the challenges they might face as a biracial couple. Amanda says, 'At first we only knew that we wanted together. ' They settled down in Birmingham, England, eager to start a family. On July 3, 2006, the black and white couple got their “one in a million' miracle: Amanda gave birth to fraternal twin (异卵双胞胎) girls with completely different skin colors, and the greatly amazed parents gave their daughters intertwined names: one would be Millie Marcia Madge Biggs, the other Marcia Millie Madge Biggs.

From a young age the girls had similar features but very different color schemes. Marcia had light brown hair and fair skin like her English-born white mother, while Millie had black hair and brown skin like her black father, who is of Jamaican descent. 'We never worried about it; we just accepted it' Michael says.

'When they were first born, ' Amanda recalls, 'people would look at my one daughter and then look at my other daughter. Then I'd get asked the question: 'Are they twins? ''

    'Yes. '

    'But one's white and one's black. '

According to Amanda, people who commented on the girls weren't openly discriminatory (歧视的) or judgmental—just very curious, and then as time went on, people just saw the beauty in them.

The twins know what racism is. 'Racism is where somebody judges you by your color and not by your true self, ' Millie says.

Michael, the father, says he’s faced inequality at times throughout his life because of the color of his skin. ' But it's a different time now, ' he says. Neither he nor Amanda has ever witnessed racist behavior toward their twin girls.

'When people see us, they think that we're just best friends, ' Marcia says. 'When they learn that we're twins, they're kind of shocked because one's black and one's white. ' But when the twins are asked about their differences, they mention something else entirely. 'Millie likes things that are girlie. She likes pink and all of that, ' Marcia says. ' I don't like the color pink; I'm a tomboy. People should know about us by our true selves, not by our colors. After all, people are made how they are. '

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Amanda and Michael are of the same race.

B.Amanda and Michael were not happy about the birth of their twins.

C.The possibility of twins with different skin colors is small.

D.It was easy for Amanda and Michael to start a family of their own.

2According to the passage which of the following is NOT true?

A.Sometimes Michael is unequally treated because of his race.

B.The twin girls see their skin colors as their major difference.

C.People are curious but friendly to the twin girls.

D.People who are racists judge a person by his appearance.

3How does Marcia react to the people who ask questions about their differences?

    A.She never answers them.

B.She is upset about their questions.

C.She answers with their different characters.

    D.She tells them about colors.

4What is the author’s attitude towards racism?

    A.Opposed. B.Supportive.

    C.Indifferent. D.Tolerant.
