26、Airplane emissions are a big problem for the climate—and steadily rising. Experts predict that aircraft emissions will triple(增三倍)by 2050 as demand for flights increases. To prevent this terrible situation, a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with government and industry partners, is attempting to completely redesign airplanes.
Their idea, called the “double-bubble” D8, could significantly reduce plane’s carbon footprint and improve fuel efficiency if confirmed in full-scale tests. It involves major changes to the standard 180-passenger Being 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft.
The most significant change, though, is where the engines are fixed. Air slows down as it flows over the top of a traditional plane, thus creating drag and making the craft less efficient. But the D8 design moves the jet’s engines from their usual spot underneath the wings to the top of the plane’s body, by the tail—where they suck in and speed up the slow layer of air, greatly reducing drag.
These changes would make the aircraft use 37 percent less fuel than a typical passenger jet. The experts have already built and tested an 11th-scale model of the aircraft in a NASA wind tunnel. Combining the new design with future technological advances could further reduce fuel use and finally add up to 66 percent in fuel savings in two decades.
Other experts note that the D8’s develops must still overcome economic difficulties while ensuring that the engines are strong enough to handle the new design. Still, “it’s a very remarkable idea and design,” says Brian J. German, an aerospace engineer at the Georgia Institute of Technology, who was not involved in the work. The experts are now exploring the development of a half-scale model plane. If the effort succeeds, travelers may fly in one of these jets as soon as possible.
【1】Why are airplane emissions steadily rising?
A. Because of the special climate. B. Because of designing new airplanes.
C. Because of the increasing flights. D. Because of the development of industry.
【2】What are the most obvious changes of the new airplanes?

C. Their engine position. D. Their engine power.
【3】How do the experts reduce pollution from planes?
A. Using 11th-scale models. B. Saving energy.
C. Inventing stronger engines. D. Improving typical passenger jets.
【4】How is the new plane progressing?
A. It meets with economic difficulty. B. It is at the laboratory stage.
C. It may fly as soon as possible. D. It is testing with its new engine.
27、 Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.
Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.
Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.
BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.

28、In 1986, thirteen tombs were found in Fangmatan, an area that lies close to the city of Tianshui in China’s northwestern Gansu Province. Most were built during the Warring States Periods (475-221 B.C.). The tombs were located in Gui County, which lay within the territory of the state of Qin.
What the archaeologists found in one of the tombs was quite a surprise—seven maps that, through a fortunate coincidence, had survived for more than 2,200 years. This early date makes them the oldest known surviving maps from China.
After two years of difficult work, specialists managed to restore the maps and bring all their details back to light. The seven maps were drawn with black ink on four rectangular slabs (平板) of pine wood. The pieces all measured almost the same size. Each is about 10.5 inches long, 7.13 inches wide, and 0.43inch thick.
These maps offer positive proof of how advanced the art and science of mapping was in China at the time. They include information about both the administration and the geography of Gui County. They also include the longitude and latitude of the area, as well as the most characteristic elements that are marked on today’s maps. Less important areas are simply named and have no lines drawn around them. Also labeled on these maps are roads, mountains, and rivers.
When you take a closer look, you will note another fascinating feature. The forests in Gui County are also defined. Interestingly, we can even recognize markings that describe the types and sizes of the timber (木材) to be found in the several areas. This information offers valuable insights into what the local plant life looked like during that time.
But that is not all. In some cases, even the distances from the forests to the settlements are marked. Can you guess why? Well, timber was an important commodity (商品), and it had to be transported. The Fangmatan maps include everything that was necessary for the organization of such journeys and business dealings. Taking all this into consideration, they clearly served as economic maps for traders.

29、 People living in New York City are fearful after facing the worst of COVID-19 health crisis(危机). This fear is bringing about a sudden increase in home sales and rentals around the small towns and wooded hills to the city’s north.
Anil and Joyce Lilly won’t be staying in their Bronx apartment much longer. They just bought a house north of New York in the Hudson Valley. It takes about an hour to reach from the city.
“We were more elbow rooms. We were locked into the apartment for three months, three full months,” Joyce Lilly explained their move to Washingtonville, New York. “I feel like I’m getting out of prison and I want to run as far away as possible. ”
House sellers describe an active market recently, with many house hunters able to work from home. Steven Domber said plenty of the home buyers are coming from Manhattan, in the heart of the city. Many of them are experiencing “cabin fever (幽居病), which is wanting to get out of an apartment and having some land if there’s a lock down again,” he said. House agents say sales and rental activities are far above normal. Domber said his June sales were up about 30 percent compared to the same month last year. Home builder Chuck said he took eight orders in one month, compared to his usual one and a half each month.
But New York City is in no danger of losing a lot of people any time soon. The movement looks more like a trickle (细流) in a city of 8.3 million. With new homes in the area running from under $200, 000 to more than $l million, it is an escape many people cannot afford. But the increase in sales and long-term rentals suggests many New Yorkers see the city as less livable.

A.To get rid of COVID-19.
