二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、阅读理解

A  At a recent visit to the beautiful Keukenhof flower gardens in Holland, I learned about the practice of topping. As flowers grow, sometimes the growers cut off the tops of the flowers, which they believe causes the plants to invest more energy into flower growth and less into seed production. The expected result is flower buds that will produce higher quality flowers.

This is the same with personal growth.Sometimes when we produce first results in a certain area, it can be helpful to cut them off and throw them away. This can free up energy for a stronger attempt elsewhere instead of settling into the comfort zone of satisfaction with the old results.

After running my computer games business for 10 years and getting satisfying results with it, I decided to drop it and leave that field behind. This freed up my energy to focus on my personal development writing and speaking. If I'd kept running the old business, this would have meant less energy to invest in my new path.

It can be difficult to choose the topping approach because you're taking something that's already reasonably satisfying and cutting it out of your life, in the hopes that something even better will grow in its place.

Do you want to settle where you are right now? If so, then topping is unnecessary. But if you'd like to do better and believe you have a good shot at improvement, just like the flower growers at Keukenhof, then topping is a sensible practice. To free up time and energy for future growth in new directions, you have to drop the merely satisfactory. This gives you a shot at the truly beautiful.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone is by definition an uncomfortable experience, but it can result in a lot more growth than staying put.Though dropping satisfaction to go for more growth is not an easy path to follow, I do find it to be the more beautiful path.

【1】By using metaphor(比喻), the author means that the tops of flowers are ________.

    A.personal growth

    B.his writing and speaking

    C.a stronger attempt elsewhere

D.the first results we produce in a certain area

2If you believe that you "have a good shot at improvement", you believe that ________.

    A.you are good at improving

    B.you are fond of improving

C.you have a strong ability to improve

D.you have a good chance to improve

3The author calls on the readers through the passage to ________.

    A.settle where they are

    B.drop the truly beautiful

C.step out of their comfort zone

D.get rid of the uncomfortable experience

4The best title of the passage should be ________.

    A.Flower Gardens in Holland

    B.Comfort or Growth

    C.Personal Development

    D.The Topping Approach

  • 22、Tourists visiting the Canary Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling—not a tune, but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a much more widespread use of whistled languages. In at least 80 cultures worldwide, people have developed whistled versions of their local languages when the circumstances call for it.

Whistled languages are almost always developed by traditional cultures that live in mountainous regions or in dense forests. That’s because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting, says Julien Meyer, a linguist who explores the topic of whistled languages. Skilled whistlers can reach 120 decibels (分贝)—louder than a car speaker. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting can. That lets people communicate when they cannot get close enough to shout.

Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be imitated in a whistle. We distinguish one speech sound from another by minor differences in their sound frequency patterns. Whistlers can express all of these distinctions by varying the pitch (音高) of their whistle. And the skill can be adapted to any language, even those that have no tradition of whistling.

However, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some—such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico—have already disappeared. Modernization is largely to blame, says Meyer, who points to roads as the biggest factor. “That’s why you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less access to roads,” he says.

Fortunately, there is still a ray of hope. UNESCO has listed two whistled languages—Silbo in the Canary Islands, and a whistled Turkish—as elements of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts. In the Canary Islands, for example, Silbo is now taught in schools. “If people hadn’t made that effort, Silbo would probably have disappeared,” says Meyer. There, at least, the future of the whistled language looks bright.

【1】What can be learned about Silbo?

    A.It is an endangered tune.

B.It is employed to entertain tourists.

C.It is used in more than 80 cultures.

D.It is a whistled version of Spanish.

【2】What are whistled languages mainly used to do?

    A.Pass on secret information.

B.Get messages across over long distances.

C.Imitate the sound patterns of other languages.

D.Show minor differences between speech sounds.

【3】Why are whistled languages disappearing according to Meyer?

    A.Lack of skilled teachers.

    B.Contact with modernity.

    C.Difficulty in learning them.

    D.Popularity of official languages.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the future of Silbo?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Dissatisfied.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Uncaring.

  • 23、   Joseph Goldberger was a doctor for the United States Public Health Service and he was an advocate for scientific and social recognition of the links between poverty and disease. In 1914, Goldberger was asked by US Surgeon General Rupert Blue to study a skin disease that was killing thousands of people in the South. The disease was pellagra (糙皮病)

Goldberger traveled to the state of Mississippi where many people suffered from pellagra. He studied the victims and their families. Most of the people lived a hard life. The doctor came to believe that the disease didn’t pass on from one to another, but was instead related to food. He received permission from the state governor to test this idea at a prison. Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual foods, mostly corn products. A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and drank milk. Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not.

But some medical researchers refused to accept Goldberger’s idea. For the South, pellagra was more than simply a medical problem. There were other things, including Southern pride.

So Goldberger had himself injected (注射) with blood from a person with pellagra. He also took liquid from the nose and throat of a pellagra patient and put them into his own nose and throat. He even swallowed pills that contained skin from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Goldberger’s wife. None of them got sick.

Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929. He was fiftyfive years old. Several years later, researchers discovered the exact cause of pellagra: a lack of vitamin B3 known as niacin.

1Who were likely to get pellagra according to Goldberger?

A.People in the south of America.

    B.People having a poor diet.

    C.People in prison.

    D.People touching pellagra patients.

2What did Goldberger want to prove by the experiments mentioned in Paragraph 4?

    A.Pellagra wasn’t so terrible.

    B.Pellagra could be cured.

    C.Pellagra didn’t spread.

    D.Pellagra wasn’t a medical problem.

3Why did some medical researchers refuse to accept Goldberger’s idea?

    A.Goldberger’s idea sounds ridiculous.

B.They have done their own research.

    C.The result hurt their pride.

    D.Goldberger didn’t do enough research.

4Which words can be used to describe Goldberger?

A.Selfless and friendly. B.Devoted and determined.

C.Patient and expert. D.Stubborn and enthusiastic.

  • 24、Chinese scientists have identified a new protein that restricts HIV infection, a discovery that could pave the way for the development of new drugs against the virus. The protein, P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1), which exists in human cells, can inhibit (抑制) the process by which HIV reproduces, according to research published in the science journal Nature Microbiology this month.

However, the study also showed that PSGL-1 can be negatively affected by Vpu-an accessory (附属) protein of HIV-which can neutralize the ability of PSGL-1 to resist HIV. Further research is under way to develop a drug that can inhibit the HIV protein so that PASGL-1 can restrict HIV, according to Tan Xu, a researcher at Tsinghua University's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, a leading author of the study.

Several other proteins in human cells that could resist HIV have been discovered over the past 10 years, but the virus can also evade (避开) them. PSGL-1 shows particular promise in that it can inhibit the HIV in multiple ways-especially by blocking the infectiousness of virus offspring, Tan said.

“We are starting to research into small molecule (分子) compounds in the hope of finding one that can restore PSGL-1’s anti-HIV function. In this way we can develop a very effective antiviral drug for people with HIV/AIDS,” he said. Tan said it will require at least three to five years for the research to reach the preclinical stage, and more time after that before a clinical trial is possible. The research was conducted by researchers at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Fudan University in Shanghai and George Mason University in the United States.

Existing treatment methods for people with HIV/AIDS, which mostly rely on a combination of different drugs, can prevent the disease from progressing but cannot cure it, and long-term use of drugs can result in drug resistance.

An estimated 37 million people in the world live with HIV, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. The study provides new leads to developing antiviral drugs, Tsinghua University said in a statement.

【1】What can we learn about PSGL-1 from the passage?

A.Both the protein PSGL-1 and the protein Vpu are HIV proteins.

B.PSGL-1 can restrict the function of the protein Vpu.

C.PSGL-1’s molecule compounds have been identified.

D.The protein PSGL-1 functions better than others in resisting HIV.

【2】What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?

A.The existing treatment for HIV are far from perfect.

B.It will be a decade before the antiviral drugs is put on the market.

C.American scientists played a leading role in the research.

D.HIV/AIDS will no longer be a deadly disease owing to the new discovery.

【3】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.There is a long way to go before curing HIV.

B.More people are faced with the threat of HIV.

C.Chinese scientists are leading the way in curing HIV.

D.A new protein to resist HIV was confirmed by scientists.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A journal

    B.A fiction

    C.A magazine

    D.A brochure
