二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Alice In Wonderland is my favorite story. And acting is my number one passion.

At my old school, Poulsbo Elementary, I’d starred in every play from third grade on. Before that, gymnastics was my thing. But then I played my first role as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan. And after that, back flips just couldn’t compare.

So when my sixth-grade teacher, Mrs Pearson announced during my first week at Newland Elementary that we’d be performing Alice in Wonderland for the school play, I practically screamed out loud with excitement. I’d always wanted to play the role of Alice! In the story, Alice went down a rabbit hole where weird (怪异的) things happened. Somehow I could relate to her more than ever now that I was going to a new school.

When Mrs Pearson announced that I would act as one of the hedgehogs (刺猬) in the play, my stomach started to ache! The hedgehogs had no lines but just got hit with mallets (木槌) and then disappeared! But I clapped along with everyone else and pasted a fake smile on my face. Maybe I should just go back to gymnastics and forget all about acting.

Tyler and Ella were the other two hedgehogs. When we were outside the classroom, Ella had one hand against the wall and appeared to be doing ballet warmups. “I really wanted to be the Queen of Hearts,” said Ella. She raised her left leg so that it was almost parallel to her body.

“Yeah, I wanted to be the Cheshire Cat,” said Tyler. He twirled (旋转) around with his hands clasped together above his head. Both of them seemed like good dancers.

    Suddenly I had an idea.

My heart was pounding crazily. But at least I didn’t have a stomachache anymore.

The first rehearsal finally came. Then came our cue.

“One...two...three,” with the hedgehog costumes, we ran onstage in a line, steps synchronized (同步) and arms waving together. We stopped in front of the Queen of Hearts and curtsied (屈膝). She was so surprised that she almost forgot her next line.

The Queen took her mallet and aimed at Hedgehog #1—Ella. When the mallet touched her, Ella spun and jumped across the stage using moves from Ballet. “Wow,” said everyone.

The mallet came down on Hedgehog #2, Tyler. Tyler glided across the stage doing a Sideways Moonwalk. “Aah,” said the cast, even louder than before.

The Queen looked excited as she prepared to hit Hedgehog #3—me. When the mallet tapped me, I did three back flips. Everyone erupted into applause.

The three of us looked at each other. We knew we managed to surprise everyone by making small parts cool.

I still miss my friends in Poulsbo. But Seattle feels a lot less like the rabbit hole now, and a lot more like home.

  • 22、I never knew how amazing it would feel to help a family 4,560 miles away from my home. I never knew how great an effect I could have on that single family.

From the moment I walked into French class, I knew almost instantly that I belonged there. My teacher, Madame Weiser, is a kind and caring woman, and is the person who started the interest within me to help a family abroad, no matter how many miles apart.

Back in 2011, my teacher traveled as a tourist to Maxi, a country settled in West Africa with a large French-speaking population. She didnt expect to adopt an entire family, but fate had other plans. Madame met a nice man named Monsieur Diarra, a driver who had shown her the way through the dry lands of Mali.

Mali is now a war-torn country and unsafe for tourists to visit, leaving little work for taxi drivers. Madame Weiser realized how Monsieur Driarras family struggled on a daily basis, for he had a wife and four children to support as well as their grandmother, so she made a final decision to send the family as much money as she could raise every month.

Now, three years later, Madame Weiser has still kept up her fund, collecting money from family and friends as well as students to support the cause. It has become more than just my teacher donating to her adopted family abroad.

As president of French Club at my high school and a French Honor Society member, I decided that our club should work to raise money for the family in need. By washing cars, we raised over $1,000.

From my experience, I’ve learned that making an effort is worth more than anything. Its effect is priceless!

【1】 Why do taxi drivers have difficulty finding work in Mali?

    A. People dont like taking a taxi.

    B. Tourists visiting Mali are few.

    C. Mali is very unsafe for them.

    D. Public transport is enough.

【2】 What does the underlined expression the cause refer to?

    B. Looking for jobs for the drivers in Mali.

    C. Helping the homeless as much as possible.

    D. Donating money to the adopted family abroad.

【3】 What did the writer think of her experience?

    A. Boring   B. Puzzling

    C. Satisfying.   D. Relaxing.

【4】 What is the best title of this passage?

    A. The Love for Africa.     B.  A Kind Foreign Driver.

    C. My Helpful Teacher   D. My Unforgettable Class

  • 23、Art is everywhere. Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Why, then, is art still so widely considered to be “the easy subject” at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort?

Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, sure, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience, a unique atmosphere and a memory that will go through the rest of their lives. People don’t just want material things anymore, they want to experience life—the arts are a perfect crossover between culture and commerce.

Furthermore, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer. Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values through artworks in honour of events significant to a nation’s experience.

The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people’s well-being. The Royal Society of Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure.

Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages. Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future. Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.

Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes. Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human.

A.most people purchase them for collection

B.they are more expensive and less accessible

C.they have both commercial and cultural values

D.their prices may climb up as time passes

【2】By sharing their arts experiences, community members can ________.

A.keep the community safe from illnesses

B.develop a stronger tie between them

C.learn to appreciate their own works of art

D.offer honourable solutions to their problems

【3】What can we learn about people who are involved in artistic activities?

    A.They enjoy better living conditions.

B.They like to compare themselves with others.

C.They are particularly good at both music and art.

D.They tend to be healthier physically and mentally.

【4】How does kids’ engagement with the arts benefit them?

A.It promotes their academic performance and emotional growth.

B.It gives them more confidence in exhibiting their learning skills.

C.It inspires their creativity in designing their future career.

D.It helps to make responsible people out of them.

  • 24、   Reducing, reusing and recycling is a way of life in Sweden. Recycling is required by law and garbage is sorted at home before it goes to a recycling center. Recyclables are sorted into seven categories and recycling stations are within just 300 meters of all residential areas. “Recycling almost everything is a must in Sweden now. It actually feels very uncomfortable when you visit another country and can't find easy ways to recycle,” said Owen Gaffney, an expert at Stockholm Resilience Centre and Future Earth.

But not all of its garbage is recycled. Sweden uses alternatives that include burning garbage to make electricity instead of using fossil fuels to heat 1.2 million homes. About half of household garbage is sent to one of the 33 waste-to-heat plants. Sweden is importing garbage from other countries to keep these plants running. Sweden is also a world leader in turning food waste into eco-friendly biogas. It has made food waste collection compulsory beginning in 2021. There is a food waste biogas plant, which allows biogas to be used to run public buses and to heat apartment buildings.

Sweden now wants to deal with those remaining items that cannot be recycled by using a circular(循环论证的)economy approach. It means that products can be reused and only recycled when absolutely necessary. The Swedish government formed an advisory group to find a new way of making this part of its environmental policy.

This will not work effectively unless people are taught to change their behavior. Now the government is reforming its tax code so that people could get cheaper repairs or buy used things. The large Swedish clothing retailer(零售商)H&M operates a recycling program that gives customers discounts when they bring back old clothing.

Sweden is fighting climate change by doing all the right stuff. Waste recycling and the plans to switch to a circular economy will go a long way in reducing its carbon footprint and will help stop global warming.

1What do we know about Sweden?

A.Sweden imports household garbage for biogas.

B.Everything is recycled after being used in Sweden.

C.Half of garbage in Sweden is used to produce heat.

D.It is convenient to recycle things in Sweden.

2What does the advisory group do?

A.Teach people how to save fossil fuels. B.Conduct a survey about the local economy.

C.Make sure the citizens recycle wisely. D.Offer advice on environmental policy.

3How does the government encourage its citizens to reuse?

A.It provides various recycling programs. B.It cuts down taxes on new products.

C.It offers lower prices for repairs. D.It gives discounts to regular buyers.

4From which is the text possibly taken?

A.A book on city environment. B.A news report on local environment.

C.A science report on public health. D.A travel guide on Sweden.
