26、The Pathfinder
When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again.
After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night.
We found him just in time.
This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, had he made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.
Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes that the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he may be turned around many times, but he is seldom lost.
There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation. A rainstorm or sudden blizzard may catch him without a compass (指南针) in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.
When this happens, the normal first reaction (反应) is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.
The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

A. been shot by a gun B. become confused
C. been attacked by wild animals D. been in great danger

27、When I first came to Armenia (亚美尼亚) and started to learn the Armenian language, I was overwhelmed by the difficult task ahead. I decided I was going to try and only learn the basics for survival, because, after all, who speaks Armenian?
I spent the first few months just trying to keep up with my classmates, but always with the idea in the back of my head that I really didn’t need to try that hard, because Armenian was not a language which would serve me in the future. I even had Armenians telling me that I had better invest my time learning Russian which could someday come in handy.
Despite everything, I invested a lot of time learning the Armenian language, in part because only one other person in the community I live in speaks English. I eventually started to notice people’s appreciation of me having gone to the trouble of learning their language. I have been thanked for speaking Armenian, which is something that has really amazed me.
But when Armenians started to notice how much importance and time I was giving to their language, we automatically (自动地) started bridging the gap between our differences, and they became interested in me as an individual and in where I came from. I think language is such an important part of culture. Speaking Armenian has served me as a bridge to the people of this country, and by immersing (使专心于) myself in it as I have done, I can better and more fairly represent the culture of Armenians to the people of the United States.
Living in Armenia has taught me the importance that language has, not just in the culture, but also the identity of a people. I don’t think I could have been able to immerse myself in the culture and get the deep cultural experience I am getting right now if I had dismissed Armenian as an expensive luxury I couldn’t afford due to the practicalities of time and utility.
【1】Why didn’t the author pay more attention to learning Armenian at first?
A.He didn’t think it useful in the future.
B.It was too difficult to learn.
C.He would leave the place soon.
D.He preferred to learn Russian.

A.Language is the spiritual pillar of Armenians.
B.Language is the carrier of cultural exchange.
C.Communication is the main part of daily life.
D.Communication is the beginning of friendship.
【3】What is the text mainly about?
A.Culture is very significant for a nation.
B.Language is important for studying abroad.
C.Life in Armenia is wonderful.
D.Language is a wonderful bridge.

29、Nuclear power is the world's largest source of clean energy. Nuclear power plants(电厂) produce no controlled air pollutants, such as sulfur or greenhouse gases. The use of nuclear power in place of other energy sources helps to keep the air clean, preserve the earth's climate, and prevent acid rain.
However, there exist safety concerns if the plant is not operated correctly or unforeseen things happened when the plant was developed, as happened at the Fukishima(福岛) plant in Japan. It may cause damage to everything, including our health. Nuclear power's danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation.
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can't be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can't detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can't sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being immediately by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no levels of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be serious. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed immediately. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(辐射)and feel fine, then die for cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
【1】What can we infer from the passage?
A. We can’t detect radioactivity even with modern equipment.
B. Only radiation at very high levels can kill an animal or human being.
C. If a few cells are only damaged, healthy cells will take the place of dead ones.
D. Radiation is harmful no matter what level it is.
【2】How can nuclear radiation kill an animal?
A. By killing many cells in important organs.
B. By killing a few cells.
C. By hitting any place in its body.
D. By damaging its heart.
【3】If a human being is hit by nuclear radiation, he may .
A. die of cancer after many years
B. die immediately
C. have a child who may be born weak
D. all of the above
【4】What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. Discussing the cause of cancer.
B. Solving the mystery about radiation.
C. Emphasizing the importance of protection from radiation.
D. Introducing the nuclear power.

“Test tourism” for grammar schools will be stopped and replaced by a new national selection exam, according to plans being considered by ministers.
A new “selective education team” has been set up, 【1】 up by Nick Timothy, who is joint chief of staff to Prime Minister Theresa May.
Currently, there is a wide 【2】 in the type of Eleven plus exams that children sit, depending on which school or area of the country the student is in. Ministers are hoping to impose severe 【3】 on” test tourism”, where parents travel huge distances and even relocate their family to secure a place for their child at a grammar school.
A summary document of a series of meetings between senior Department for Education ministers and the Grammar School Heads Association (GSHA) also reveals that the Government is developing “coaching 【4】 tests” to prevent heavily tutored children from wealthy families or expensive preparatory schools gaining unfair advantage.
Details of ministers’ plans 【5】 after the GSHA released a list of key points following their discussions with Government officials. Education Secretary Justine Greening reportedly told the grammar school headteachers that ministers “are philosophically opposed to selection but present little 【6】 to support this claim”.
According to the GSHA, ministers still want to see the top 25 percent of pupils attend 【7】 schools, and for grammar schools to cater .for a “narrower ability range” - closer to 10 percent. The notes add that there is a “move away from focusing on social 【8】 to social reform”.
Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner said it was “unbelievable” that grammar school headteachers “have been given the inside 【9】 on the government’s plans, while our state schools and academies are left out in the cold”.
A Department for Education spokesperson said, “Thanks to the government’s reforms, there are now almost 1.8 million more pupils being taught in good schools than in 2010. But we know there is more to do, and that’s precisely why we have set out plans to make more good school places 【10】 to more parents and in more parts of the country.”

Common Characteristics of Folktales
Most of us know some very old folktales. People shared these stories orally for years before writing them down. Since people told stories instead of writing them, the stories changed in between places and with each storyteller. Each new storyteller made changes to the stories based on his own traditions and culture. For example, many cultures have stories like the raven tale about how people got light. In these tales, though, the main character is another type of animal.
Next, the characters in folktales are similar. They are usually ordinary characters who do extraordinary things. They usually have only one or two strong characteristics. For instance, the chief in the Raven story is selfish and not very smart. But Raven is very generous― e wants to help people. And he’s very clever as he finds a way to get the light. In addition, often the characters in folktales are not people but animals with human qualities. They talk, make plans, and have strong emotions. Small animals such as the popular spider and turtle play this role in West African stories. In summary, the characters of folktales are simple but often clever in achieving their goals.
Finally, the plot, or what happens in the folktale, is usually exciting. Most folktales begin with an expression like “a long time ago” and then move very quickly into the story, which starts with a problem. For instance, a strong, bad character often gives a weaker character a task and promises something if he completes the task. The weaker character often uses clever tricks, special skills, or magic to complete the task. In the end of a folktale, the good characters usually win and the bad characters lose. In conclusion, the plot of a folktale is interesting.
So, in summary, we know that the tradition of folktales is very old. They are told all over the world, but they share several of the same features, as said above.
