  • 26、How to Cultivate (培养) Hope

Of all the positive emotions, hope is the one that requires to be cultivated. Here’s a tip sheet to get you into the habit of hope.

Set and achieve goals. Goal-setting is only as important as the action you take toward achieving your goals. 【1】They know that without a clear goal, it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus. They don’t go with the flow of life. They actively make decisions and take action to move forward in their lives.

Stick with positive people. 【2】Optimists maintain a healthy balance. They know that seeing in different perspectives allows them to cultivate hope realistically. While they take in multiple, sometimes difficult perspectives, they remain sympathetic.

【3】People high in hope tend to pay attention to what is in front of them. They don’t dwell on (细想) the past or worry about the future though they do set goals for themselves. They stay focused on what’s happening right now. This allows them to stay positive and take action.

Be self-reflective and confident. While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. They know that failure is unavoidable and that it’s important to learn from those experiences, moving forward with positive motivation. 【4】

Keep a positive outlook. When it comes to high-hope people, no matter what life throws at them, they try their best to see the silver lining in the bad situation. 【5】In addition to having a positive outlook, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. They invest their energy in the future and hunt for the good.

    A.Focus on the present.

B.And people high in hope do both.

C.Worry about the past and the future.

D.This ability for self-reflection is valuable.

E.They are extremely easily lost in the bad situation.

F.Being around them is one way to keep an optimistic mindset.

G.They don’t let the circumstance define their emotional response.

  • 27、Nadine McKenzie, a 35-year-old wheelchair dancer in South Africa, has experienced great difficulty since he took up dancing as a hobby. He said that access is the biggest barrier for entering the performing arts. “There are not many companies or training programs for persons with disabilities, especially in the dance field,” McKenzie said. “I’ve had quite a few experiences where you’d be in a class with different people and some trainers would not know what to do with us, and so for those reasons, they don’t open these spaces to different artists.”

Beyond lack of access, McKenzie, who’s been dancing for 15 years, said inclusion(认同) is another barrier for people with disabilities. “There are very few people especially in South Africa that actually have projects where they involve dancers with disabilities,” he added. “It's something that’s still very difficult, but it’s slowly starting to change.”

Seeing a gap in the industry, McKenzie founded Unmute with his friends in 2013, a dance company in Cape Town that enlists young South Africans with disabilities to get involved in the arts. “It's been extremely rewarding in the sense that we’ve been able to create more platforms for artists to train and perform, and also expose more young people,” he said. McKenzie believes Unmute is helping break down some of these barriers through awareness campaigns not just for people with disabilities to sign up, but also for able-bodied people to learn how to work with them.

Gerard Samuel, a professor at the University of Cape Town told CNN that though there has been some progress in both access and inclusion within dance, there is still much work to be done. “Barriers include mindsets of limitation and inability of disabled persons,” he said. All this still need to change. He believes that education, investment and more representation in the media would help encourage more accessibility and inclusion.

【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A.Inclusion is the biggest barrier for dancers with disabilities.

B.It's challenging for disabled people to get involved in dance.

C.Nadine McKenzie began to dance when he was 15 years old.

D.Most projects in South Africa involve dancers with disabilities.

【2】Which word can best describe McKenzie?

    A.Cold-hearted

    B.Humorous

    C.Stubborn

    D.Caring

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Unmute benefited both people with disabilities and able-bodied ones.

B.McKenzie founded a dance company all by himself.

C.Little progress in both access and inclusion has been made.

D.Unmute only created platforms for artists to train and perform.

【4】According to Gerard Samuel, ______can help encourage accessibility and inclusion.

    A.education and investment

    B.mindsets of limitation

    C.less representation in the media

    D.inability of disabled persons.

  • 28、“It’s a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown (严厉的打击) by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car. Yes, you read that correctly—the very way of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now considered illegal in the UK.

The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors’ (议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage reasonable parking”, but in vain. Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.

Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry. Angie is a mother who made the “big hammer” comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top.” The nearest drop-off point for her six-year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school. Others are happy with the decision, serious though it may seem. Councillor Jason Frost said:

“Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great result. I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”

I see daily the disorder created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking lot crowded with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smoke. Meanwhile, the conversations around overweight children and the importance of daily physical activities continue to stand out in schools.

【1】Why is Angie Baillieul against the new rule?

A.She will lose her job as a school driver.

B.She has adapted to the American practice.

C.She thinks it adds inconvenience to her kid.

D.She is often fined by London police.

    【2】What concerned Jason Frost most?

    A.Students’ health.

    B.Students’ safety.

    C.Parents’ inconvenience.

    D.People’s complaints.

【3】What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?

    A.Favor from all people.

    B.More over-weight children.

    C.Complaints from neighbors.

    D.Less daily disorder.

    【4】What’s the passage mainly about?

    A.London police cause widespread anger

B.American schools care about kids’ safety

C.Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy

    D.Parents attempt to resist(抵制) a school rule

  • 29、Can we vibrate(振动)ourselves healthy? That's the basis behind a form of treatment called Whole Body Vibration(WBV). The idea is simple: Standing on a vibrating plate forces our muscles to do work, which could lead to countless health benefits. But, despite years of research and hundreds of studies, the true benefits of WBV are still unclear.

A former study found that subjects who did leg exercises on a vibrating platfrom for 11 weeks had no increase in their jumping ability. Other early studies found no effects of WBV.

More recent work suggests whole body vibration could offer important benefits to people unable to perform normal workouts. A 2016 Scientific Reports study of 40 people with cerebral palsy(脑瘫)found that the participants could both walk and stand up better after 20 weeks of WBV. A 2017 study in the Journal of Biomechanics found that whole body vibration had a greater effect on older people's muscles than it did on those who were younger, an indication that it might offer benefits to seniors. A number of research groups have found some indications that WBV could help with cardiovascular health, and a group from Rio de Janeiro State University has shown it could help fight osteoporosis.

These results are encouraging, says Silmara Gusso, a senior lecturer in exercise sciences at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, but more research is needed. And, she warns, not every kind of vibration is helpful to our bodies, so the commercially available vibration plates may not work as advertised.

“We cannot imply that the results obtained with certain equipment can be applied to other equipment,” Gusso says. “Some types of vibration might even cause harm.”

【1】Who will benefit from WBV most?

A.A weak man unable to run normally.

B.A fit woman hungry for slimmer body.

C.An older citizen suffering from depression.

D.A busy younger eager to improve jumping ability.

【2】Which of the following is Silmara Gusso's idea?

A.She wants to do more researches.

B.Not all vibration is beneficial to us.

C.Vibration has made our body in bad condition.

D.Advertised vibration equipment is not effective.

【3】Which word best describes the author's attitude to WBV?

    A.Critical.

    B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Supportive.

【4】Where can you find the passage?

    A.A report on economy.

    B.A science magazine.

    C.A guidebook for patients.

    D.An advertisement brochure.
