二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Remembering things is an important function of our brain — if we can’t recall how to do something, we can’t survive. If you think about it, there is so much we have to remember. It’s no surprise that sometimes we are forgetful.

Memory allows the brain to store and recall information when required. Our short-term memory can hold a small amount of information for a short time, while our long-term memory can hold an unlimited amount of information for a long time. Our memory is amazing, but why do we still forget things?

It’s possible we don’t always store information in our memory effectively, maybe because we are in a rush or we consider it irrelevant at the time. When we store information, we often make connections with other things, which helps us recall it later. If you don’t have these connections, then it can be easier to forget. Writing for the Science Focus, Luis Villazon says, “It is also possible that memories become dim over time. As they have not been revisited, their biological ‘trace’ becomes lost.” It’s true that if you don’t perform a task for a long period of time, it can be difficult to recall how to do it.

But sometimes even our short-term memory can let us down. This is called “The Doorway Effect”. Writing for the Future website, psychologist Tom Stafford explains that this “occurs because we change both the physical and mental environments, moving to a different room and thinking about different things”. Put simply, we are trying to spin too many plates at the same time. So, if you forget things easily, it could be because you have too much in your mind.

But we do need to keep our memory sharp by continually using it. Especially when we beyond our 50s, our brains tend to shrink in volume. That’s when we’re at more risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

However, as Luis Villazon says, “Forgetting is not always a bad thing! It would waste resources if we remembered every detail of the world around us.”

【1】What is the function of memory?

    A.To memorize things only.

B.To use and exercise our brain.

    C.To store information in computers.

D.To store information and recall it when necessary.

【2】What does the underlined word “dim” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Unclear.

    B.Strong.

    C.Hard.

    D.Simple.

【3】Which action maybe belongs to “The Doorway Effect”?

A.You find it hard to recite all the teacher said.

B.You forget the money you hid under the bed 10 years ago.

C.You don’t know what to order when you are in the restaurant.

D.You suddenly can’t remember what to do as soon as you get home.

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.How our brain works?

    B.Why we forget?

    C.Memory and diseases

    D.Long-term memory and short-term memory

  • 27、As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric(生物测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.

Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device(装置) that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to — regardless of whether someone gets the password right.

It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.

In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch” four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.

【1】Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?

    A.To reduce pressure on keys.

    B.To improve accuracy in typing

    C.To replace the password system.

D.To cut the cost of e-space protection.

【2】What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible?

A.Computers are much easier to operate.

    B.Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.

C.Typing patterns vary from person to person.

    D.Data security measures are guaranteed.

【3】What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard?

    A.It’ll be environment-friendly.

    B.It’ll reach consumers soon.

    C.It’ll be made of plastics.

    D.It’ll help speed up typing.

  • 28、   A recent study suggests that vitamin D pills can help speed up the time taken for burns to heal, and prevent scarring(结疤). The vitamin, which is produced naturally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine, is believed to help protect against burning.

Previous studies have shown that vitamin D pills help decrease redness and swelling after sunburn, and may be one of the reasons why the body produces the chemical.

The research from Birmingham University, has found they may also help relieve other types of burn. Researchers monitored 38 patients who had suffered serious burns for a year and recorded their levels of vitamin D. They found that those with the highest levels of vitamin D had better wound healing and fewer scars.

Professor Janet Lord said: “Low vitamin D levels were associated with worse results in burn patients including life-threatening infections(感染),death and delayed wound healing. Major burn injury severely reduces vitamin D levels and adding this vitamin back may be a simple, safe and cost-effective way to improve the condition for burn patients.” Professor Lord and her team are now focusing on finding out why there is a rapid loss of vitamin D in patients immediately following burn injury and hope that they may be able to prevent this in future.

The amount of reduction in patients’ vitamin D levels was not related to the severity(严重程度) of the burn, so levels may also be decreased in minor burn injury, suggesting taking vitamin D pills could also help people with everyday burns. Public Health England now recommends that all Britons take vitamin D pills in the winter because it is impossible to make sufficient quantities in the darker months.

1What does the new study find?

A.People with low vitamin D levels get burned easily.

B.Vitamin D helps with the recovery from burn injury.

C.Vitamin D pills aid in reducing the swelling from burns.

D.Vitamin D is more beneficial to serious burns than minor burns.

2What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A.The severity of one's burn reflects his vitamin D levels.

B.Vitamin D pills are more needed in the autumn months.

C.Burn patients lacking vitamin D are at high risk of infection.

D.Minor burns have no effect on patients’ vitamin D levels.

3What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.The researchers. B.Vitamin D pills.

C.Previous studies. D.Some kinds of vitamins.

4Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

    A.Vitamin D: A Necessity for Our Health

B.Vitamin D Pills: When Are They Needed?

C.Vitamin D: How Much Does the Body Need?

D.Vitamin D Pills: Heal Burns &. Prevent Scarring

  • 29、   You're out to dinner. The food is delicious and the service is fine. You decide to leave a big fat tip. Why? The answer may not be as simple as you think.

Tipping, psychologists have found, is not just about service. Instead, studies have shown that tipping can be affected by psychological reactions to a series of different factors from the waiter's choice of words, to how they carry themselves while taking orders, to the billl's total.

Even how much waiters remind customers of themselves can determine how much change they pocket by the end of the night.

“Studies before have shown that mimicry (模仿)brings into positive feelings for the mimicker, "wrote Rick van Baaren, a social psychology professor. "These studies show that people who are being mimicked become more generous toward the person who mimicks.

So Rick van Baaren divided 59 waiters into two groups. He requested that half serve with a phrase such as, "Coming up!" Those in the other half were instructed to repeat the orders and preferences back to the customers. Rick van Baaren then compared their takehome pay. The results were clear-it pays to mimic your customer. The copycat (模仿者)waiters earned almost double the amount of tips to the other group.

Leonard Green and Joel Myerson, psychologists at Washington University in St Louis, found the generosity of a tipper may be limited by his bill. After research on the 1,000 tips left for waiters, cabdrivers, hair stylists, they found tip percentages in these three areas dropped as customers' bills went up. In fact, tip percentages appear to plateau (稳定期)when bills topped $100 and a bill for $200 made the worker gain no bigger percentage tip than a bill for $100.

"That's also a point of tipping," Green says. "You have to give a little extra to the cabdriver for being there to pick you up and something to the waiter for being there to serve you. If they weren't there, you'd never get any service. So part of the idea of a tip is for just being there."

1Besides service, how many other fectors(因素)affecting the customers' tipping are mentioned in the passage?

    A. 1 B. 2

    C. 3 D. 4

    2These studies show that .

    A. tipping can be affected by physical reactions to many different waiters

    B. the mimic waiters can get almost twice as much money as those who don't mimick others

    C. people who are being mimicked usually tip less to the person who mimics them

    D. mimicry makes the mimicker feel bad

3According to the passage, which of the following will be likely to show the right change of the tip percentages?

    A.  B.

    C.  D.

4We know from the passage that the writer seems to   .

    A. object to Mr Green's idea about tipping

    B. think part of Mr Green's explanation is reasonable

    C. support the opinions of Mr Green and Rick van Baaren about tipping

    D. give his generous tip to waiters very often

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

During summer vacation when I was twelve, a sawmill (锯木厂) was operating in the woods near our farm. Early each morning, I’d watch the men cut down big trees, saw them into logs, and deliver the logs to the mill.

The logs were dragged by a team of horses named Jack and Billy. They were gentle, and I petted them every chance I got.

One day, Mr. David, the mill owner, said he’d pay me 15 cents a day to bring fresh water to his men. In 1942, that was a lot of money! I said yes.

One afternoon when Jack and Billy were pulling a log up to the mill, a stick injured Jack’s right front hoof (蹄). After Mr. David removed the stick, the horse driver said that the foot should be doctored. But Mr. David said he didn’t have time for that. He said if the horse couldn’t earn his keep, he’d get one that could.

I felt sick inside. Jack and Billy were my best friends! I couldn’t stop thinking about Jack’s foot and what Mr. David had said.

For the rest of the day the team pulled logs from the woods. By nightfall, Jack was limping badly. Mr. David told his crew that the mill would be closed for three days because he’d be away for the Fourth of July. He offered to pay me a dollar to feed and water the horses while he was gone. I quickly agreed.

The next morning, I rode my bike to Mr. David’s barn. I wanted to look at Jack’s hoof. I reached down and grabbed the hair on the back of his leg, as I’d seen Mr. David do, and Jack lifted up his foot so I could see.

The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and mushy (烂糊的).

I didn’t know anything about medicine, and Mr. David said he wouldn’t pay for a doctor. But if he didn’t earn his keep, Mr. David would get rid of him. But what could I do?
