  • 26、Since being introduce to chess at age of six, Tanitoluwa “Tani” Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world’s youngest-ever grandmaster—the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12 years and 7 months.

On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani came one step closer to achieving his dream by becoming America’s newest national chess master. The title, awarded by the US Chess Federation, requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. The boy, who practices for up to 11 hours every day after school, says the secret to his success is thinking of his plays ahead of time. Tani told NPR, “In a normal position, I can do up to moves in advance.”

The now fifth-grade fell in love with chess in 2017 after being taught the basic by a part-time teacher at his elementary school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother couldn’t make up her mind to allow him to join the school’s chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four were living in a homeless shelter and did not have extra funds to spare.

When his mother explained the family’s situation to the chess club’s instructor, Russell Makofsky, he immediately waived (免除) all costs for the young boy. Tani did not disappoint those who supported him. Less than a year after joining the club, he had won seven awards. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he beat 73 competitors to win the New York State K-3 scholastic championship. His moving story went viral and a GoFundMe campaign (活动), set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough funds for Tani and his family to move into a new house.

【1】What’s the main factor in Tani’ success in his own opinion?

A.Practicing chess for a long time every day.

    B.Learning from national chess masters.

C.Thinking twice before making a move.

D.Setting up a role model for himself.

【2】How did Tani’s mother feel about his entering into the chess club at first?

    A.Proud.

    B.Undecided.

    C.Scared.

    D.Unbelievable.

【3】What can we infer about Russell Makofsky?

A.He managed to post Tani’s story online.

B.He helped improve Tani’s living conditions.

C.He became famous after Tani’s winning awards.

D.He was disappointed at Tani’s performance at first.

【4】Which words can best describe Tani?

    A.Independent and helpful.

    B.Talented and hard-working.

    C.Kind-hearted and grateful.

    D.Curious and creative.

  • 27、Americans often try to say things as quickly as possible. So, for some expressions, we use the first letters of the words instead of saving each word. Many common expressions or long names are shortened this way.

B-Y-O-B is a short way of saying, “Bring Your Own Bottle.” The letters BYOB are often found at the bottom of a written invitation to a simple social, event or gathering of friends. For example, let’s say I had a New Year’s Eve party. I might include on the invitation. “Please come to my party and BYOB.” The bottle each person brings is what the person wants to drink at the party or wants to share.

However, an invitation to a special event -such as a wedding-would never say BYOB. An invitation to an official or very special event often has other letters written at the bottom. The letters are R-S-V-P. These letters represent the French expression “Repondez S'il Vous Plait.” In English the words mean “Respond If It Pleases You.” Americans use the letters as a short way to say, “Please answer this invitation.”

Another expression usually used for business and not parties is A-S-A-P. So, a colleague might say she needs something done ASAP. It means as soon as possible. She might also need something done by C-O-B. That means she wants to finish it by “Close Of Business” or the end of the work day.

Beginning letters are often used to represent the names of universities. A famous one is MIT. That is short for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Another major university is UCLA. Almost no one ever says its real name, the University of California at Los Angeles. That takes way too long!

【1】Why do Americans like using the first letters of the words?

    A.They want to save time.

    B.They think it interesting.

    C.They like doing things differently.

    D.They love creating new expressions.

【2】Which of the following may a couple use in their wedding invitations?

    A.B-Y-O-B

    B.B. R-S-V-P.

    C.A-S-A-P.

    D.C-O-B.

【3】How is the text mainly developed?

    A.By analyzing causes.

    B.By listing examples.

    C.By following time order.

    D.By making comparisons.

【4】What is the main purpose of this text?

A.To describe the unpopularity of the formal language.

B.To explain the usage of some daily expressions.

C.To advise people to speak more simple English.

D.To introduce one of the Americans’ language habits.

  • 29、   Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能)is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make computers "smart". John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name "artificial intelligence" in 1955. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.

An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically(逻辑地). At present we use the term Al for successfully understanding human speech, recognizing(识别)human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AlphGo(阿尔法狗). Some people also consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking, a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology.

Math is the basic language of AI. If we raise the standard in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them into AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.

Scientists hope to create creative and emotional AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this fascinating field.

  • 30、Procrastination (拖延) is one of the world’s worst time: You have so much that you need to do, but when it comes to actually sitting down and getting it done, it seems basically _______. But what if I told you that the _______of procrastination, a phenomenon called pre-crastination, could be just as bad? A new study conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania recently dealt with the topic of pre-crastination — and it turns out that it could be a huge problem for many of us.

If you’re wondering how the contrary of procrastination could be a _______ thing, it’s because it means we’re completing tasks just in order to_______ them. Pre-crastination refers to the desire to do things _______, but only to ease the anxiety over leaving a particular task undone.

_______, imagine that you have to respond to an email. In your _______ to get the email out of your inbox, you make a bunch of spelling and grammar errors in your response because you typed it out so quickly. The discovery of pre-crastination leads to all kinds of questions about________ and productivity. Now it seems that we have to not only worry about ________ things unnecessarily, but also doing things too fast or completing easy tasks so that we can get them done.

The researchers mentioned this in their article, published in Scientific American, in which they advise ________ procrastination and pre-crastination by dividing your large tasks into smaller ones. That way, you can finish seemingly difficult tasks, but also avoid completing all of the simple ones________.
