27、 Donzella Washington, 80, graduated from Alabama A&M University on Dec.6 with a bachelor's degree in social work. She made history as the oldest graduate of Alabama A&M in their 144-year history.
In 2010, her mother died, followed by her sister and husband's death, which all happened in three years. Washington said that her motivation (动力)behind going back to school was her husband, Jeff, who was one of her biggest supporters.
“My father supported everything she did, especially returning to school," her daughter, Kimberly Washington, said. “Although my father did not have a traditional college education, he knew the value of gaining one.”
Before moving to Alabama, with her daughter in 2012, Washington and her husband lived on a farm in California, where they fostered (收养)about 30 children - including a group of six siblings in the 1970's so that they could stay together.
“I have seen her work tirelessly to achieve this dream and to finally be there to see her was a very proud moment. The most challenging part has been comforting her when she was missing my father most... those moments when she cries and all I can do is hold her and love on her. Kimberly continued.
Another one of the challenges Washington overcame was a stuttering (结巴)problem growing up. So she began taking speech classes. Then, years later, she picked up social work and business classes one — by — one at Lawson State Community College before transferring to Alabama A&M University.
Now, Washington said she's not slowing down any time soon. She said that she's even considering going back to school to get her master's degree. In the meantime, she hopes to provide volunteer service wherever necessary.

28、Do milestones aid growth and quality of life? Or do they construct barriers? This is what I often struggle with, especially when constructing a vision of my life in the future.
On the one hand, milestones can be a really helpful tool for igniting(激起)motivation and a sense of purpose. Particularly in times of depression, I can find myself examining life and how I would like it to look I set myself goals and targets in the hopes of reaching the lifestyle I want to create for myself. However, I usually end up setting unrealistic targets. I get frustrated when my life takes a different course of action, and my milestones are missed, adapted or just changed.
We need to remember that convenience is not comprehensive. Life will sometimes not go the way you want it to. There is no straight pathway. Both people and our lives are completely unique, and are in constant evolution - so why put so much pressure on ourselves to reach targets by a certain point?
Society consistently sets unrealistic standards upon us all. As such, we feel we should therefore conform to(遵从)the general standard presented to us, without considering what is right for ourselves as individuals. The pressure to act and look a certain way based on your age is unhealthy and exhausting, particularly when society chooses not to see each individual as just that – an individual.
So, do milestones help or slow growth?
As far as I am concerned, the answer is both yes and no. Milestones help bring a sense of calm to the disorder of somebody’s life, but they also have the potential to create confusion and frustration when life takes you on a different path, forcing you to miss determined targets for new unexpected ones.
Life is ultimately personal and full of many individual choices that both open and close varying pathways - the choice of how to move forward in life is yours. The key needed, however, is knowing yourself well enough to evaluate and decide which milestones are needed and when.
【1】What is the author’s purpose in mentioning his own goal-setting experience?
A.To explain the advantages of milestones.
B.To introduce effective ways to set goals.
C.To highlight the necessity of setting goals.
D.To show milestones are a double-edged sword.
【2】Why can social standards have a negative effect on us?
A.They ignore that each of us is unique.
B.They fail to guide us to do the right things.
C.They are too general for us to follow.
D.They constantly change and thus exhaust us.
【3】Why can milestones slow growth according to the author?
A.They can take us on a wrong path.
B.They can disturb our pace of life.
C.They can discourage us when we miss goals.
D.They can force us to change our targets constantly.
【4】What is the authors suggestion on making a decision on milestones?
A.Stick to our decisions.
B.Examine ourselves well.
C.Stay positive and calm.
D.Be prepared for the unexpected.
29、Researchers who helped discover a new species of Mexican butterfly are offering to sell the naming rights to raise money to fund more research. Co-discoverer Andrew Warren is hoping to raise at least $50,000 by auctioning(拍卖) off the rights to name the 4-inch “owl eye” butterfly, which lives in Sonora, a Mexican state bordering Arizona.
“That would support at least two years of research for our team down in Mexico,” Warren said. “Money goes a long way down here in Mexico.”
According to the scientific tradition, discoverers of a new species have the say in naming it. In recent years, some discoverers have auctioned off their naming rights to raise money.
Warren said the amount being sought for the butterfly is not out of the question, noting that naming rights for a new monkey species brought in $650,000 two years ago. A group of 10 new fish species that went on the naming auction block at the same time earlier this year brought in a total of $2 million.
The butterfly discovered by Warren and researcher George Austin ranges as far north as Mexico.
The butterfly was actually in a collection, misidentified as an example of another new species, at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum of National History in Gainesville, said Warren. They soon began the hard process of determining that it was indeed a “new” model of butterfly.
After checking photos and comparing it with other known species, they determined it was a separate species.
