  • 26、Agatha Christie used to go out at night. She will never forget the night when she met a robber many years ago.

That evening, she was invited to a birthday party which lasted till 2 o'clock in the morning. Without company, Agatha walked home along the quiet street. Suddenly from the shadow of a dark building, a tall man with a sharp knife in his right hand ran out at her. “Good morning, lady,” the man said in a low voice, “I don't think you wish to die here!”“What do you want?” Agatha asked.

“Your earrings (耳环). Take them off!”Agatha suddenly had a bright idea. She tried to cover her necklace with the collar (衣领) of her overcoat while she used the other hand to take off  both of her earrings, and then she quickly threw them on the ground.

“Take them and let me go.” she said. The robber was uncertain. He saw that the girl didn't care for the earrings at all, only trying to protect the necklace. He realized the necklace would cost more, so he said, “Give me your necklace.”

“Oh, sir. It's not worth much. Please let me keep it.”

    “Stop talking rubbish. Quick!”

With shaky hands, Agatha took off her necklace. As soon as the robber disappeared, she picked up her earrings and ran as fast as she could to her home.

  • 27、People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they influence you on your decision or action, it’s called peer pressure. All of us, at some point in our lives, have had to deal with peer pressure.

Recent studies have shown that peer pressure might cause an upside to you. It can make you reflect on your actions and make changes to your ways to become a better one. Observing others working hard to reach their goals will definitely encourage you to make a great effort to achieve something positive. When a teen knows that his teammates are practicing hard to become better players then it will directly affect his own performance. He will put in twice the time and energy to raise the level of his game and ensure he has a place on the team.

Having a group that brings positive peer pressure can also help you pick up healthy habits that can shape both your personality and your future. For example, when a child knows that some of his friends regularly read storybooks, he may get into the habit of reading. Seeing that his friends exercise daily, even he may take up the habit.

Just as some influences can be positive, some can be negative too. Peer pressure sometimes can make a fall in your self-confidence. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, or because they worry that others might make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group. The idea that “everyone’s doing it” can influence them to leave their better judgment behind. Besides, it is common for teenagers to think that nobody understands them and that the whole world is against them. The influence of peer pressure is such that it keeps them completely away from their family and friends who mean well. They just shut themselves off and fall into bad company.

It’s likely that you’ve experienced the impact of peer pressure in different areas, ranging from the clothes you wear to the music you listen to. Sometimes it can be hard to resist(抵抗) and you may feel forced to do something you’re uncomfortable with. So being aware of and carefully choosing the influence of peers that will lead to healthy and happy experiences is a lifelong process.

  • 28、Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office. "The railway owes me $12, " she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. "You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me $12.

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. "Come into the office, Madam, "he said politely. "I'll check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd."

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. "You look sunburnt, "he said to her. "Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?"

"Yes", she answered, shyly. "The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!"

"That's fine, "said Harry. "My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three”

"I'm four, "the child said proudly. "I'll be four and a half. "

Harry turned to the mother." I remember your ticket, Madam, "he said. "But you didn't get one for your daughter, did you?"

"Er, well", "the woman looked at the child." I mean she hasn't started school yet. She's only four. "

"A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child's return ticket to Jersey costs' "let me see $ 13. 5. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe $1. 5. The law is law, but since the fault (过错) was mine…".

  • 29、One of the simplest way to increase our happiness, according to science, is to take part in acts or kindness towards others. Recent studies have found that young children show greater happiness when they are sharing a tasty treat than when they are receiving the treat.

This doesn't just work with children. Adults feel happier when they engage in prosocial (利社会的) spending. For instance, one study found that the more people spent on others during a typical month (in the form of gift and charity donations), the greater they reported happiness.

What if you don't have money to give away? No worries, time is just as effective. Research shows that people feel happier when they freely give away their time at the service of others. For example,an examination of over 17 studies on over 74,000 participants found volunteers had significantly greater life satisfaction and lower rates of depression than non-volunteers. This pattern has been found in over 130 countries and leads to happiness regardless of whether those countries are rich or poor.

So why does giving to others increase our happiness? There are lots of psychological theories out there, but the reason might be more basic. Neuroimaging (神经影像) studies have found that giving activate (激活) the reward centers of our brain, suggesting our brains are wired to serve.

If you are able to volunteer or donate to a charitable organization, that's great. Do it. But this might be too much for some. No worries! You can add smaller acts of kindness to your daily routine. The idea behind it is if you treat others the way a happy person might do, you will end up being a happy person yourself.

【1】What conclusion might be made from the first two paragraphs?

A.A tasty meal contributes to one's happiness.

B.Acts of kindness benefit the giver's happiness.

C.Prosocial spending is a typical activity for adults.

D.Rich people are somewhat happier during a typical month.

【2】What does “this pattern” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Donating money to charity.

B.Volunteering to help people in need.

    C.Living with happier people.

D.Taking part in studies about happiness.

【3】What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4?

    A.Add the latest information.

    B.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

C.Introduce a new study for discussion.

D.Provide scientific basis for the conclusion.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Effects of Self-happiness

B.A Good Way to Enjoy Life

C.A Simple Way to Cheer up

D.Acts of Kindness in Your Life
