二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Shamarr Allen was taking a rest at home one evening last July when he was shocked by the TV news. There had been a gunshot among a group of children in the 7th Ward of New Orleans only a few miles from Allen's home, and a nine-year-old boy named Bryant suffered from severe injury. Allen was horrified and heartbroken. He thought of his own nine-year-old son.

Originally from the city's poor region, Lower 9th Ward, Allen is one of the most celebrated jazz trumpeter(小号吹奏者) in his city. His band, Shamarr Allen & the Underdawgs, has released three albums, and he often appears on local television and works as a street performer. After seeing the heartbreaking news that morning, it didn't take long for Allen to come up with a possible antidote. He had a few spare trumpets lying around. Maybe he could offer them to kids in exchange for their guns.

Allen named the program My Trumpet is My Weapon---after all, it was something of a personal principle. He met with the New Orleans mayor to figure out how to make children feel safe coming forward with their guns, and the chief of police agreed to take apart everything Allen collected.

“Just to see that they actually want to give up their guns, that’s the cool part about it.” says Allen, who has collected seven guns so far, a small but symbolically important start.

But he doesn’t stop with the exchange of gun for instrument. After the exchanges, Allen connects the children with local musicians who give them free virtual trumpet lessons. He also started a GofundMe page to buy more instruments to give away. So far, he has collected over $45,000. More importantly, he has brought hope for his city and young people looking for a better life.

“I just say, 'Look, I come from where you come from, and I can show you the way that got me out,” says Allen. “and music may not be the way for you, but it will at least open your mind to see what's out there.”

【1】Why did Allen feel shocked and sad?

A.A gang shot at Allen's home.

B.A crowd of children hurt Allen's son.

C.Allen's album was not popular in his city.

D.A boy was seriously injured because of shooting.

【2】What does the underlined word “antidote" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Question.

    B.Solution.

    C.Experiment.

    D.Priciple

【3】What is the main purpose of Allen's project?

A.To teach children to learn trumpet.

B.To destroy the guns in the community.

C.To donate musical instruments for poor children.

D.To provide hope for children with the help of music.

【4】Which of the following best describes Allen in the passage?

    A.Ambitious but demanding.

    B.Strict but generous.

    C.Caring and creative.

    D.Wealthy and curious.

  • 27、Mitchell Wollen is a student at Xavier High School in Connecticut, US. When his school shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情), he found that he had a big block of free time, and he decided to make a difference.

“My friend and I were brainstorming,” said Wollen. “We thought we’d make these hearts for people on the frontline who are sacrificing (牺牲) everything for us.”

Wollen made a model -- a wooden heart painted red with the words “Thank You” on the sign. People could put them on their front lawns to thank healthcare workers. To encourage such kindness, his mom Julie posted this on her Facebook page in early April.

After that, Wollen didn’t have any more free time. In the first week, he had 100 orders for the hearts. Filling the orders was time-consuming.

When distance learning started up, Wollen had schoolwork to do for six or seven hours a day. However, being busy with schoolwork didn’t stop him from making more signs.

After his school wrote an article on Wollen and posted it on Facebook, more people ordered signs from him.

People can donate (捐赠) $10 for his cause. It has so far helped Wollen raise more than $1,600. He plans to use the money to buy meals for healthcare workers.

He has talked with people at several medical centers in his state, hoping to bring food to the workers. Among them, Gaylord Hospital has responded. After connecting with his mother’s friend, who owns a coffee truck, Wollen planned to pay the people who run the coffee truck to offer free coffee to the healthcare workers from Gaylord Hospital.

“Everybody’s having a tough time right now,” he said. “I just want to spread positive energy and help those who are struggling in these times.”

Currently, Wollen isn’t taking any more orders for signs since he still has about 100 orders to fill. However, he hopes to be able to make more in the future and that people like him can find ways to show support during this troublesome period.

【1】Why did Mitchell Wollen make wooden hearts?

A.To kill time in the free time.

    B.To make some pocket money.

C.To show off his hands-on skills.

D.To express thanks to selfless people.

【2】What can we infer about Wollen from the article?

A.He was highly praised by his school.

B.He asked his mom to advertise for him.

C.He wanted to get known on the Internet.

D.He gave up making hearts when he was busy.

【3】How does Wollen plan to use the money?

A.He will use it to start a food business.

B.He plans to support a coffee truck owner.

C.He will buy coffee for healthcare workers.

D.He plans to use it to complete more orders.

【4】Which of the following best describes Wollen?

    A.Creative and thoughtful.

    B.Cheerful and humorous.

    C.Brave and kind-hearted.

    D.Outgoing and hardworking.

  • 28、In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them.

At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill(填充).

Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.

Serving in restaurants is often large, too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself.

Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal.

Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

    1Which statement is true?

    A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know.

    B. A hostess always seats a small group at a large table.

    C. American people never sit with people they don’t know.

    D. American people wouldn’t light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smoking.

2What is served before you order?

    A. Bread.   B. Butter.

    C. Coffee.   D. Cold water.

3What do American people always do when servings are too large for them?

    A. They take the food home with a “doggie bag” for their dogs.

    B. They leave the food on the table and go away.

    C. They take the food home with a “doggie bag” and enjoy the food later.

    D. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them.

    4Sunday dinner is_______.

    A. a dinner in the evening   B. A big noon meal

    C. a big lunch on Sunday   D. A supper

  • 29、In May, as our scientific institution began to open back up and whispers about face-to-face lab meetings started to float around, I panicked.

My hearing loss began when I was in graduate school. At first, I fondly thought I could overcome it with hard work. I began to record every one-on-one meeting because even with the strongest focus I just couldn’t catch everything, and taking notes is not a choice when you rely on lip-reading. In meetings, I sat in the front row, tiring myself as I strained to both hear the speaker and process the science. So, in the fourth year, I decided cochlea implants (植入耳蜗) were the right next step.

The week after I began to hear with both implants, I attended a conference. I looked over every listening environment to plan my equipment and where I needed to be located during the event. It worked OK — but it was still tiring, and I felt excluded from so much.

When meetings were held online, my experience was much better. The sound quality was clear, without the powerful noises of a physical office space or meeting room. I could sit back and let the sound come to me. It was easier to focus, participate, and think deeply about the science. I felt a sense of belonging. I began to leave meetings feeling refreshed rather than needing a short sleep.

I didn’t want to be forced back into struggling to understand. So, with anxiety, I contacted my adviser to make a simple hearing plan which includes asking presenters to use a microphone for our lab meetings. It worked. Now, a few weeks later, my anxiety is gradually giving way to scientific curiosity and questions enabled by feeling included and worthy of belonging. A few of my lab mates have even thanked me because they, too, were unable to hear people without microphones. Maybe instead of rushing back to “normal”, we can all take this chance to create environments that are more welcoming — for everyone.

【1】Why did the author feel panicked?

    A.Her hearing loss got worse.

    B.She hated social communication.

C.Her institution would open back up.

D.She feared returning to in-person meetings.

【2】What does the underlined word “strained” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Failed.

    B.Struggled.

    C.Managed.

    D.Prepared.

【3】How did the author feel after online meetings?

    A.Energetic.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Shocked.

    D.Sleepy.

【4】What message is mainly conveyed in the text?

    A.Online meetings work well.

B.Cochleas help people with hearing loss.

    C.Inclusion and belonging do matter.

    D.Scientific curiosity leads to development.
