Warren, Ohio lies just thirteen miles north of Youngstown, the former center of steel production, and now one of the neediest cities in the country. Both cities’ populations and its finance have been on the decline each year, with unemployment rates surpassing both the state and national average.
But it wasn’t always this way. Thirty years ago, when Camelli was a student at Howland High School, the school where she now teaches Advanced Placement Psychology, “The poorness level was around 6%,” she says. Today, it is closer to 40%.
This financial condition influences everything from the way students learn, to their ability to deal with social and emotional issues. Knowing this, Camelli created Paw Pantry. Whether it’s for food, clothes, school supplies or personal hygiene (卫生) products ,students and their parents can go on the district’s website and fill out a request form for Paw Pantry products. They can choose to pick their items up—or have them delivered—at school.
Camelli mentioned Paw Pantry when she attended her high school activity in 2017. It made her former classmates aware of how their hometown has changed over the years. “Soon, money started pouring in from all over the country, all over the world,” she says.
In just a year and a half since the Paw Pantry began, Camelli has received plenty of non-perishable (不易变质的) food, clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, school supplies—even home goods, including a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, and a stove.
Camelli actively shows her students the power of connection. “I’m definitely kinder because of Ms. Camelli. Ms. Camelli is a mother, but she’s also a mother figure for all of us”. Blake says “Ms. Camelli, you will never understand how happy this act of your caring had made me,” she added.
Camelli is a community activist, a mental heath supporter, and by many people’s standards, she’s most certainly a hero, but she doesn’t see herself that way. And that’s what she as a teacher should do.

23、 Scientists say they've developed a system using machine learning to predict when and where lighting will strike. The research was led by engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.
European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power outages, destroy property, damage electrical equipment and start forest fires. For these reasons, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict and control lightning. In the United States and other places, ground-based sensing devices are used to identify strikes as they happen. But, no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments used a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.
The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed.
The atmospheric data was placed into a machine learning algorithm（算法）, which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student at the institute who led the development of the method. He said, “current systems for gathering such data are slow and complex and require costly collection equipment like radar or satellites.”
“Our method uses data that can be obtained from any weather station,” Mostajabi said. “This will improve data collection in very remote areas not covered by radar and satellite or in places where communication systems have been cut,” be added.
The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection system. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project.

24、 No visit to the beautiful city of Paris, France is complete without a visit to the Notre Dame de Paris. The cathedral, built from 1163 to 1345, is one of the world's best examples of ancient architecture. It lies in the center of Paris, along the Seine River. Fortunately, thanks to quick action by Paris firefighters, the cathedral's most sacred relic — the Crown of Thorns — was safely transported after the fire broke out. Church officials and firefighters formed a human chain to remove other priceless treasures, such as artworks and furnishings, and load them onto waiting police cars. The cathedral's famous 18th-century organ, which boasts more than 8.000 pipes, also survived the disaster.
The tire is believed to be caused by the cathedral's ongoing repair work. Meanwhile donations to help restore the structure are pouring in worldwide at an unprecedented rate, reaching almost$ 1 billion within just two days after the fire. French President Emmanuel Macron described the fire as a “terrible tragedy”, but added, “the worst had been avoided”.
