二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A new study has found that water in the air, not just heat, is important in measuring global warming. The researchers say, when considering humidity and heat, the temperature increase is two times greater than earlier estimates.

The researchers also note, temperature by itself is not the best way to measure the effects of climate change and using temperature underestimates conditions in the tropical areas of the world.

The study was published on January 31 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The researchers team show that the energy created in extreme weather, such as storms, is related to the amount of water in the air. For this reason, they decided to use a special atmospheric measurement to show the amount of heat in an area of air. It is expressed in a scientific measurement for temperature known as degrees Kelvin.

Ramanathan is one of the writers of the study. He is a climate scientist at the University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “There are two factors of climate change: temperature and humidity. And so far, we have measured global warming just in terms of temperature,” he says. “Warm air can hold more water than cold air. For every degree Celsius that air temperature increases, it can hold seven percent more water. When the water vapor in the air becomes liquid, it releases heat or energy. That’s why when it rains, now it pours.”

Ramanathan added that water vapor is a powerful heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere that increases climate change. From 1980 to 2019, the average world surface air temperature increased by 0.79 degrees Celsius. But when they considered energy from humidity, their temperature measurement had increased by 1.48 degrees Celsius. In the tropics, the warming was as much as 4 degrees Celsius.

Wuebbles is a climate scientist at the University of Illinois. He was not part of the study. But Wuebbles said the idea makes sense because water vapor is important in extreme rainfall. He said, “Both heat and humidity are important.”

【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The combination of water and heat decreases average surface temperature.

B.The reason why it pours is that cold air can hold more water than warm air.

C.Scientists adopt temperature degrees Kelvin as a special atmospheric measurement.

D.Scientists used both temperature and humidity to measure global warming in the past.

【2】How does Ramanathan illustrate his findings in the fifth paragraph?

    A.By making comparisons.

    B.By taking examples.

    C.By analyzing reasons.

    D.By giving definitions.

【3】What is Wuebbles’ attitude to this new study?

    A.Critical.

    B.Objective.

    C.Skeptical.

    D.Appreciative.

【4】Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?

A.Extreme Weathers Are Closely Related to Air Heat Amount

B.A New Study Focuses on Global Warming Solutions

C.Humidity Is Also Important in Measuring Climate Changes

D.Two Climate Scientists Develop a Scientific Method

  • 22、As we enter a period of profound economic uncertainty, presaged (预示) by recent high-profile layoffs and a culture of “quiet quitting”, thinking about the future of work might well seem a daunting (令人生畏的) prospect.

Indeed, an ever-increasing digital skills gap threatens to stop businesses adopting the game-changing technologies that will help to power growth in the months and years ahead. For instance, with each exciting new technology comes a growing concern about whether we have a digitally savvy (精明的) workforce ready to take advantage of it. After all, keeping the workforce up to speed with the latest advances is a key element of the digital transformation process, which will prove essential if we hope to improve business productivity and efficiency alongside our efforts to achieve sustained growth.

Likewise, at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, the cybersecurity skills gap was named as one particular area of concern. There’s good reason for this focus: if businesses can’t protect themselves against external threats, they risk going backwards. And that’s before they even start thinking about achieving growth. This is why we need to address the digital skills gap urgently.

Well, we should start by changing the narrative to help us recruit and retain from a more diverse pool of talent, giving businesses a far better chance of finding the up-to-date digital skills they need. And, when it comes to engaging and empowering the current workforce, learning and development opportunities will be key, helping employees to improve their skills for the benefit of both themselves and their employers.

To make this all happen, leaders and employers must demonstrate a commitment to teaching their workforces digital skills by setting clear expectations and providing all the resources required. One approach, for example, would be to focus on the potential in the existing talent pool by identifying those already skilled in digital capabilities and supporting them to upskill their colleagues. Creating a culture of learning, with an emphasis on personal growth, can be an impressive motivator in the workplace.

Of course, it’s all well and good saying that digital skills are vital, but a workforce with purely hard skills will not future-proof a business. There’s a need for soft skills that support the broader goal, so as not to neglect the other competencies required in a digital transformation: communication, critical thinking, creative design skills, and leadership. To exploit the technology to its full potential, such qualities are equally important.

Fundamentally, getting the interaction right between humans and technology will be paramount if businesses are to succeed. As a result, human skills must not be underestimated. Every business will need a range of people with a variely of skills — not only those well-versed in math, engineering, and science, but also those with creative minds and leadership qualities.

【1】The writer’s main concern in the digital transformation process is ________.

    A.the threats from technology

    B.the challenge of upskilling workforces

    C.the culture of quiet quitting

    D.the shortage of experienced workers

【2】It can be learned from Paragraph 4 and 5 that ________.

A.replacing current workforces with digital talents is the key

B.high requirements of recruitment ensure a sound workforce

C.employers should develop a learning culture inside their workforces

D.business leaders should focus on the training of the existing talent pool

【3】What does the underlined word “paramount”in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Crucial.

    B.Beneficial.

    C.Challenging

    D.Inspiring

【4】What might be the purpose of the passage?

A.To advocate the necessity of improving digital skills.

B.To warn humans of the potential problems with technology.

C.To stress the importance of combining hard skills with soft skills.

D.To draw people’s attention to the ever-increasing digital skills gap.

  • 23、   Nate Evans of Ankeny, Iowa, got into teaching many years ago. So when his classes went remote at the start of COVID-19, he was on the lookout for ways to make children learn online effectively. One of the first things he noticed was how few students had a proper desk at home. He said students in his remote classes were often sitting on their beds or working from their family's crowded kitchen table instead of sitting at a desk.

As a woodworking hobbyist, Nate has a work section in his garage, so he bought some materials for basic wooden desks with his own money and got to work. “It's for kids who have absolutely nothing, to kids who have everything they've wanted but don't have this space because it wasn't available,” Nate said. “Somebody had to provide it and I thought, ‘Why not me?’” Once his first set of desks was complete, Nate had no trouble giving them away.

He shared his desk project on Facebook, and the members of his community suspected his intention at first, thinking he was seeking glory and wealth, but soon they understood his purpose and began sending him donations so he could build more desks. Soon, he had a whole team of woodworkers working in his garage most weekends. He's set a goal to make 2,020 desks for the 2020—21 academic year. He offers them up for free to local educators. Once they're picked up, they are distributed to kids all over his town and beyond.

Best of all, he plans to keep building desks for kids as long as they are needed. “I became a teacher to help kids,” Nate said. “I volunteer wherever I can. I feel honored to be able to do all this for the students. I want to see them learn and grow in my classroom, and I want to see them learn and grow at home too.”

【1】What made Nate come up with his desk project?

C.He made them at his own expense.

D.He donated them to his school.

【3】What was the community members’ attitude to Nate's desk project initially?

    A.Disapproving.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Doubtful.

  • 24、   More than one in five species of maple trees faces extinction, a shocking new report has revealed.

The trees are experiencing a vast decline in habitat, due to urban development, timber harvesting, and agricultural expansion. “Time is running out for the world’s biodiversity,” said Douglas Justice, associate director at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden. “Every recent survey of plants and animals in the wild points to this.” He continued, “This is happening nearly everywhere that rarer maples exist. And because of climate change, the narrow habitats that support species at the tops of mountains are quickly disappearing.”

The trees can be found in sub-tropical and tropical regions, as far south as Indonesia. The only species found in the UK, the field maple is not under threat. Not only are the trees a popular ornamental feature in parks and public spaces, but also they are a key part of the natural ecosystem in woodlands, as well as being an important timber crop in several countries.

China is home to the largest proportion of maples with 92 species. It has seen a number of trees become endangered due to urban expansion. Some 14 of the 23 maple trees at risk of extinction in the country are only found in China and have small populations and limited geographical ranges. “We still have an opportunity to save species from disappearance, but it will take expertise, resources and the cooperative efforts by the world’s botanical gardens to make it work,” Justice added.

One species in Mexico, the Acer binzayedii, is in “desperate need of conversation” despite only being discovered in 2017. “It is at risk from climate change in its cloud forest habitat and threatened by grazing, logging, and forest fires,” the report adds. The report recommends developing conversation plans, monitoring species currently not at risk to ensure populations are maintained, and adding those missing maple species to seed banks and the like.

BGCI(Botanic Gardens Conversation International)is now establishing a conversation program to address the conservation needs of maple species. Maple specialists will work together to develop comprehensive strategies to manage and deliver conservation action points for the species.

【1】What is the major reason for maple trees’ extinction?

    A.A lack of scientific research.

B.The rarity of the new species.

    C.The losses of their habitats.

    D.Problems with the distribution.

【2】What’s Justice’s attitude to saving maple trees?

    A.Hopeful.

    B.Skeptical.

    C.Reserved.

    D.Negative.

【3】What are the last two paragraphs intended to tell us?

A.There is no guarantee of maintaining the tree populations.

B.It can never be too late to join hands to protect the species.

C.All maple trees of the species are on the edge of extinction.

D.Effective measures should be taken to conserve maple trees

【4】What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A.Time is running out for maple trees.

B.Maple trees are vital to the ecosystem.

C.Maple trees will stand tall in nature.

D.Climate change puts maple trees at risk.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Bob was a short child who preferred indoor to outdoor activities. He was mild-mannered and mostly kept to himself. Sitting in the corner of the class, he was very much a loner.

At the beginning of the semester, Bob had a new classmate, Alex, who had just returned to England. Alex was assigned a seat next to Bob. To his surprise, within weeks, he became good friends with Alex even though they were poles apart in personality. Alex was popular, outspoken and artistic. “Alex is all that I want to be,” Bob thought to himself He began listening to the music Alex listened to and having similar haircut. He even quit his drama club and started playing the online games that Alex played. He seemed to have been out of his loneliness.

It was not long before Bob was introduced to Alex’s “cool” friends. He told himself that he would try all means to be part of the group. He would follow them to the football games and join the art club after school so he could spend more time hanging out with them. Bob followed them around laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions—most enthusiastically at the ones he disagreed with. He did not dare to differ in opinions as he would not want them to think badly of him. This continued for several months. At last, Bob felt relieved that he had finally fitted in.

One day, Bob overheard Alex and his cool friends talking. “Bob is such a loser,” one boy commented in a playful tone. “He just follows you around trying to be you. He copies you; he does not have a personality of his own!” another boy exclaimed. Alex laughed, to make matters worse, he added, “That fellow wears me out. I wish he would leave me alone. He thinks we are best friends. A thorough fool!”
