  • 21、Freedom and Responsibility

Freedom’s challenge in the Digital Age is a serious topic. We are facing today a strange new world and we are all wondering what we are going to do with it.

Some 2,500 years ago Greece discovered freedom. Before that there was no freedom. There were great civilizations, splendid empires, but no freedom anywhere. Egypt and Babylon were both tyrannies, one very powerful man ruling over helpless masses.

In Greece, in Athens, a little city in a little country, there were no helpless masses. And Athenians willingly obeyed the written laws which they themselves passed, and the unwritten, which must be obeyed if free men live together. They must show each other kindness and pity and the many qualities without which life would be very painful unless one chose to live alone in the desert. The Athenians never thought that a man was free if he could do what he wanted. A man was free if he was self-controlled. To make yourself obey what you approved was freedom. They were saved from looking at their lives as their own private affair. Each one felt responsible for the welfare of Athens, not because it was forced on him from the outside, but because the city was his pride and his safety. The essential belief of the first free government in the world was liberty for all men who could control themselves and would take responsibility for the state.

But discovering freedom is not like discovering computers. It cannot be discovered once for all. If people do not prize it, and work for it, it will go. Constant watch is its price. Athens changed. It was a change that took place without being noticed though it was of the extreme importance, a spiritual change which affected the whole state. It had been the Athenian’s pride and joy to give to their city. That they could get material benefits from her never entered their minds. There had to be a complete change of attitude before they could look at the city as an employer who paid her citizens for doing her work. Now instead of men giving to the state, the state was to give to them. What the people wanted was a government which would provide a comfortable life for them; and with this as the primary object, ideas of freedom and self-reliance and responsibility were neglected to the point of disappearing. Athens was more and more looked on as a cooperative business possessed of great wealth in which all citizens had a right to share.

Athens reached the point when the freedom she really wanted was freedom from responsibility. There could be only one result. If men insisted on being free from the burden of self-dependence and responsibility for the common good, they would cease to be free. Responsibility is the price every man must pay for freedom. It is to be had on no other terms. Athens, the Athens of Ancient Greece, refused responsibility; she reached the end of freedom and was never to have it again.

But, “the excellent becomes the permanent,” Aristotle said. Athens lost freedom forever, but freedom was not lost forever for the world. A great American, James Madison, referred to: “The capacity (能力) of mankind for self-government.” No doubt he had not an idea that he was speaking Greek. Athens was not in the farthest background of his mind, but once man has a great and good idea, it is never completely lost. The Digital Age cannot destroy it. Somehow in this or that man’s thought such an idea lives though unconsidered by the world of action. One can never be sure that it is not on the point of breaking out into action only sure that it will do so sometime.

1People believing in freedom are those who ________.

A.regard their life as their own business

B.seek gains as their primary object

C.behave within the laws and value systems

D.treat others with kindness and pity

2What change in attitude took place in Athens?

A.The Athenians refused to take their responsibility.

B.The Athenians no longer took pride in the city.

C.The Athenians benefited spiritually from the government.

D.The Athenians looked on the government as a business.

3What does the sentence “There could be only one result.” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.Athens would continue to be free.

B.Athens would cease to have freedom.

    C.Freedom would come from responsibility.

D.Freedom would stop Athens from self-dependence.

4What is the author’s understanding of freedom?

A.Freedom can be more popular in the digital age.

B.Freedom may come to an end in the digital age.

C.Freedom should have priority over responsibility.

D.Freedom needs to be guaranteed by responsibility.

  • 22、Probably one thing that Armenians wouldn’t forget when they sit at the table is bread. Armenians knew how to make wine and bake bread from the ancient times. Perhaps the pride of Armenian cuisine is the traditional and national bread Lavash.

Lavash is a traditional Armenian thin bread. The preparation of this demands special skills and great effort. In most cases, making tools is the duty of men but preparing bread is the job of women.

Generally, tondir, the most important tool, is located underground. For making Lavash, Armenians use flour, water, and salt. Firstly they make dough (面团) from flour, water and form them into balls. Then the balls are rolled into thin layers and stretched over a cushion. After preparing them with a special skill slap against the walls of the tondir. Waiting for a minute or thirty seconds, pull the already baked list from the wall.

According to tradition, the preparation was a ritual (仪式) of every family. Making dough was the duty of the elder women of the family and the preparation of it started with the rising of the Sun. Firstly they made the fire, then started making it. The process was accompanied by nice conversations, songs, and jokes.

Want to know what is the tastiest Armenian sandwich? Of course, it is made from Lavash, salty tasty cheese, greens and meats.

In July 2014 Lavash was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List as an expression of Armenian culture. Besides the cuisine, Lavash has a ritual role in weddings. When the couple comes to the groom’s house, his mother puts a list of Lavash on the shoulders of newly married couples as a sign of prosperity (繁荣).

  • 23、What about your emotions? How do they help you to understand what you are reading?

In Jane Yolan's Owl Moon,a girl explores with her father on a snowy night. She longs for this special night. And she's amazed when she sees an owl.Have you felt longing before? Amazement? Well, if you have, it helps you have a sense of agreement. When we can put ourselves inside a story we can understand it better. Our brain tells us,"Oh, this girl's experience is a bit like mine."And boom! We can relate to her.But this skill is not born in us.So young kids have to learn it.

Pictures and images help young readers to understand and recognize feelings.Readers feel joy when seeing the smiling faces of friends. They feel fear when turning the page to find a scary monster. They are just pictures, but the feelings are real. This skill, to understand the thinking and feeling of others, is what researchers call "theory of mind".

For example, think about the faces of people and animals in stories. The Big Bad Wolf's scary teeth. The 'o' shape of a surprised character's mouth. Or big, wide eyes like the girl in Owl Moon. By noticing the faces, readers can start to figure out what it feels like to be that character. And that helps to figure out how people feel and think in real life.

But most young readers don't go into deep, scary woods. And some may not go to the beach or play basketball. In the book Yo!Yes?two kids meet and play ball. The kids start the story on opposite pages. But as the story goes on,they get closer until they are together. Some young readers might not play basketball, but they can read the clues on the page to figure out how the kids are feeling. And some readers might not like the game, but they can feel excited for the characters because of how the characters look and move.

【1】What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.Owl Moon talks about the exploration of the Moon.

    B.The feeling of"amazement"is a sense of agreement.

C.Readers are blessed with the ability to interpret others.

D.Readers with similar experience understand the story better.

【2】Which of the following might help readers develop"theory of mind"?

    A.True feelings.

    B.Smiling faces.

    C.Picture books.

    D.Reading skills.

【3】Young readers can go deeper into a story by________.

    A.tracking the plot

    B.developing new skills

    C.sharing similar hobbies

    D.analyzing the background

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.How thinking influences reading.

    B.How readers improve reading skills.

    C.How emotions help enhance reading.

D.How kids figure out the clues of stories.

After spotting a wallet on the front seat inside a parked car with its window down, he stood guard in the rain for about two hours waiting for the owner to return.

After hours in the cold and wet, he reached inside and pulled the wallet out hoping to find some ID so he could contact the driver, only to discover it contained 400 in notes, with another 50 in spare change beside it.

He then took the wallet to a nearby police station. When the car’s owner John Anderson and his colleague Carol Lawrence returned to the ear, they were shocked to find two policemen standing next to it. The policemen told them what Mr. Smith did and that the wallet was safe.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A new study suggests many Americans have not visited the most popular places of interest around the country or even in their hometown.

The study found that 25 percent of Americans have yet to visit "iconic landmarks" in their own cities. Twenty-three percent said they had not visited any of the nation’s natural wonders, famous buildings or historic battlefields.

The study was a project of the research service OnePoll and Zipcar, a car-sharing company.

Researchers questioned 2,000 Americans. Only 33 percent of them said they had been to Niagara Falls and just 28 percent had been to Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The study showed that only 30 percent had been to New York’s Empire State Building. Only 22 percent had ever visited the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Many Americans say they would like to travel more. More than half of those questioned said they would like to get out more. Forty-nine percent reported being "creatures of habit." By that, they mean they generally do the same things in the same way. That would leave little time to visit local or national landmarks.

The researchers found that the main reasons keeping Americans from exploring their cities or the country were money, lack of time and a lack of good transportation.

On social media, one Twitter user reacting to the study named a few reasons for not visiting famous places. The writer noted that “most of us don’t get paid days off, get punished for taking a day off, or simply can’t afford to visit anything or go anywhere anymore."

The Twitter user added, "Childcare costs more than College, College Loans costs more than a mortgage payment, and jobs don’t even pay for one of those things.”

The study found that three of the places Americans wanted to visit were Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park and the Statue of Liberty.

The researchers also found that, on average, Americans go to a new coffee shop every five months, and a new restaurant every four months. They also spent time at a lake or near the ocean once every six months, and go to a park every five months.
