二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Darshan Karwat is making headlines for having maintained an incredibly plain and continued lifestyle during his student years. The man gave up fast food, new clothes, and even toilet paper, until he got to a point where his trash(垃圾)for an entire year fit in just two plastic bags!

Karwat, who is originally from India, started the trash-free experiment when he lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and managed to keep it going for two and a half years. In the first year, he produced only 7.5 pounds of trash, and in the second year, he brought that number down to 6 pounds, which is a mind-blowing 0.4 percent of the 1,500 pounds of yearly trash produced by the average American.

Looking back, Karwat says that his inspiration to start the project came from a radio show The Story, on which he heard of a British couple who lived trash-free.

His trash mostly consisted of a few chip bags, glass milk-bottle caps, fruit stickers, and broken glass. He obviously had to make lots of sacrifices to achieve this – he stopped buying any kind of packaged food including cheeses, only drank milk from recycled glass bottles, and gave up on buying new clothes or stuff for his home – no gadgets, furniture, or even cups. He began carrying his own fork, spoon, plate, and a bowl everywhere he went, just to avoid plastic cutlery(餐具).

“I needed to change the way I lived, and I had to get creative,” he added. “When a restaurant furnished a napkin-wrapped(包纸的)fork and knife, I asked the server to change them for cutlery without the napkin. I’d remember to say “No straw!” after asking for water and to make sure the veggie(素食者)burger I ordered didn’t come with a wooden pick holding it together. I did what I had to do, and it was awkward.”

1What is the passage mainly about?

    A.How a person inspires others

    B.How Darshan Karwat gets famous.

C.Darshan Karwat and his no trash experiment.

D.A plain and sustainable lifestyle attracts the public.

2Why did Darshan Karwat have the idea of living trash-free?

    A.Because he is from India.

B.Because he has been in university.

C.Because he heard a story on the radio.

D.Because a British couple reminded to do so.

3What did Karwat buy when he was making no-trash experiment?

    A.Cheeses. B.Furniture.

    C.Milk. D.Gadgets.

4What Karwat said in the last paragraph shows that   .

A.he seldom went to a restaurant

B.it wasn’t convenient to live the life

C.the server seemed cold to him

D.he was proud of what he had been doing

  • 22、Why You Shouldn’t Exercise to Lose Weight

Many of us are starting (or restarting) exercise in hopes of losing unwanted pounds. Aiming to be more active is good. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your New Year’s resolution could be very well backfire.

【1】, we often sour on it and stop working out. In a study of 30 overweight people who participated in a 12-week exercise program and were interviewed afterward, this response was typical: “It was quite disappointing that I didn’t lose a single pound.【2】.”

Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment—a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say (or said yourself) “I’ll do extra exercise” after eating too much during the holidays or at a celebratory dinner?【3】. As a consequence, we’re unlikely to enjoy it or to keep doing it.

The takeaway is that we see exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight. For some, the motivation may be an improved mood or less stress. Others may find exercise makes them feel physically and mentally stronger.【4】. It can help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, colds, etc. It can also improve sleep, make you energetic, and prevent aging. What’s more, exercise can prevent weight gain and improve your appearance.

【5】. It’s perhaps the most important thing you can do for your health. But to improve the chances of success, focus on how movement helps you feel better physically and emotionally—and forget about how it moves the needle on the scale.

A.It kind of made me give up

B.So by all means, try to exercise regularly in 2022

C.While it’s not very helpful for melting away pounds

D.When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations

E.The benefits of physical activity are well beyond these aspects

F.We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being “bad” in the past

G.For starters, exercise, at least the kind most of us do, is typically ineffective for weight loss

  • 24、   Researchers at the DogStudies lab at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History have shown that dogs may possess some metacognitive (元认知) abilities. Specifically, when they do not have enough information to solve a problem, they will actively look for more information, similarly to primates (灵长类).

In a recent study, project leader Julia Belger explored whether dogs have metacognitive abilities. To test this, the researchers designed a device involving two V-shaped fences. A reward, either food or a toy, would be placed by one researcher behind one of the two fences while another researcher held the dogs. In some cases, the dogs could see where the reward was placed, while in others, the dogs could not. The researchers then analyzed how frequently the dogs looked through the gap in the fence before choosing an option.

The researchers found that the dogs did check significantly more often for the reward when they had not seen where it was placed. These results show that dogs do tend to actively seek extra information when they have not seen where the reward is concealed.

The results did not allow the researchers to say definitively whether dogs possess meta-cognition, though they displayed some evidence for it. Julia said, “For humans, vision is an important information gathering sense. In this case, our experiment was based on a checking action relying on sight, but the dogs probably also used their sense of smell when checking through the gap. We know that smell is very important to dogs and we could see that they were using it.”

Julia added, “In future, we would like to develop an experiment to investigate under what circumstances dogs decide to use their sense of smell versus sight. This may give us additional insights into their information seeking abilities.”

【1】What ability may dogs have according to the study?

    A.To offer information like primates.

B.To use their skills to find more food.

C.To seek information to solve a problem.

D.To ask for help before choosing an option.

【2】What does the underlined word “concealed” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Decorated.

    B.Hidden.

    C.Produced.

    D.Purchased.

【3】What attitude did the researchers have to the finding?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Friendly.

    C.Negative.

    D.Critical.

【4】In which section of a newspaper can you probably read the text?

    A.Environment and technology.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One evening a middle-aged lady was walking down the street when she noticed an old beggar sitting on the corner. The man was elderly, unshaven, and ragged. As he sat there, pedestrians walked by him giving him dirty looks. They clearly wanted nothing to do with him because of who he was - a dirty, homeless man. But when she saw him, the woman was moved to sympathy.

It was very cold that day and the man had his torn coat - more like an old suit coat rather than a warm coat - wrapped around him. She stopped and looked down. “Sir?” she asked. “Are you all right?”

The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like that she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before. “Leave me alone,” he shouted.

To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling - her even white teeth displayed in extremely bright rows. “Are you hungry?” she asked.

“No,” he answered ironically. “I've just come from dining with the president. Now go away.”

The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm. “What are you doing, lady?” the man asked angrily. “I said to leave me alone.”

Just then a policeman came up. “Is there any problem, ma'am?” he asked.

“No problem here, officer,” the woman answered. “I'm just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?”

The officer scratched his head. “That's old Jack. He's been a fixture around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?”

“See that cafeteria over there?”she asked. “I'm going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold for a while.”

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Are you crazy, lady?” the homeless man resisted.
