二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Mobile phones have become a must-have in our modern society. They have become a central technology in a variety of aspects, not just regular conversations.

The reason behind the growth of mobile phones is that they have changed the way communication has been perceived by humans. The mobile devices permit rapid communication in all forms and they have truly made the world a smaller place. It is possible to use a mobile device to send locations, pictures, and videos now. Most crucially, they have become flexible in usage, with something for everyone.

The modern society has accepted mobile phones in a big way but it has come at a cost. Today, there’s great dependence on mobile devices even for basic actions like knowing the time. The addiction to mobile phones has become such a huge problem that people tend to be glued to their devices even when communication is not taking place. This is because mobile phones have become the hub (中心) for receiving entertainment at any time of the day.

A few years ago, “The World Unplugged” study was carried out to analyze the risk of mobile devices in our day-to-day lives. An experiment was conducted to see how long an individual can go without mobile devices. Participants were asked to stay away from their mobile phones for 24 hours and they ended up developing plenty of psychological symptoms, while some even displayed physical problems.

The mobile devices have indeed made our lives much more convenient, but they have also brought about plenty of health issues. In some cases, the mobile devices may have improved the quality of life, but we cannot deny the fact that they have become the medium through which anxiety, depression, nervousness, and loneliness spread around us. It is of great importance to use them with caution to avoid developing too much of an attachment to them.

【1】Why do mobile phones become a central technology in our daily lives?

A.They allow diverse forms of communication.

D.The wide acceptance toward mobile phones.

【3】What conclusion can we draw from the experiment in Paragraph 4?

A.Mobile device usage has few risks.

B.Our daily lives depend on mobile devices.

C.Mobile devices will cause physical problems.

D.The participants were addicted to mobile devices.

【4】Which of the following will the author most probably agree with?

•The AAC starts on every Wednesday and Saturday, lasting 2 days

    •Fees: $450

    Exploration, Excitement, Experiences

That’s what the Advanced Adventurer course is all about. You don’t have to be “advanced” to take it — it’s designed to advance your diving, so you can start right after earning your Open Water Diver certification. The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives.

    Who should take this course?

Open Water Divers who are at least 12 years old are ready to step up and sign up for an Advanced Adventurer course. Divers under 18 may only participate in certain Adventures Dives — check with your SSI Instructor.

The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive helps improve your navigation skills. The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest and the adventures you have — photography, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.

What scuba equipment will you use?

  • 23、A recent story on TikTok showed how two neighbors found companionship during the lockdown because of the pandemic (疫情), thanks to a shared love of the piano.

The story started when Giorgio Lo Porto heard his neighbor playing the piano through their dividing wall. Lo Porto, an Italian living in London, decided to reach out to his neighbor and left a note asking him or her to play My Heart Will Go On. The mystery neighbor agreed, leading Lo Porto to send another note suggesting they play a duet (二重奏) together from the comfort of their own homes. The mystery neighbor started playing the piano at 2:00 pm, and when he stopped after finishing a part of a song, Lo Porto continued. Over time the duets between the two complete strangers became a regular weekend appointment.

Weeks later, the pair finally met and it was better than expected. The mystery pianist happened to be a 78-year-old Polish man named Emil, who was living in temporary accommodation until his house was sold. He lost his wife in December due to COVID-19 and all he had left was the piano. And the reason why he played at 2: 00 pm every weekend was that he and his wife used to do that.

The pair finished a final duet together — Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata — before Emil moved out at the end of February.

While this is heartwarming in itself, the story has a heartbreaking ending: On March 14, Lo Porto shared that his old neighbor had passed away in his sleep. He said, “Now he is reunited with his wife.”

While saying goodbye to Emil, Lo Porto wrote, “Dear Emil, I knew very little about you, but you changed my life. You gave me back my passion, and we shared that with the world. You’ll be in my heart. I’ll keep playing, thinking of how powerful music can be. You said I was your light, but you’ve been mine, too. Bye, Emil.”

【1】What happened after Lo Porto left the second note for Emil?

A.They composed a new song based on a classic.

B.They reached out to neighbors to cheer them up.

C.They shared their playing skills with TikTokers.

D.They performed music together through the wall.

【2】Why did Emil play the piano at a special time?

    A.To upload his updates.

    B.To remember his wife.

    C.To advertise his house.

    D.To comfort strangers.

【3】What is the sad part of the story in the author’s opinion?

    A.Emil's passing away.

    B.Lo Porto’s departure.

    C.The pair’s final performance.

    D.The unfamiliarity between the pair.

【4】What does Lo Porto mainly convey at last?

    A.He admired Emil’s ambition.

B.It is easy to say goodbye.

    C.Emil positively influenced him.

    D.Music is a universal language.

  • 24、Thailand’s “loneliest tree”, a tree growing on a rocky island only a few meters in diameter, is being seriously threatened by tourists desperate to get a selfie (自拍) with it.

The small patch of land located just off the country’s eastern coast in Trat Province has been called “Koh Khai Hua Roh” because it looks similar to the island featured in drawings of funny scenes involving a man and a woman trapped on an island in the popular Khai Hua Roh comic. The uninhabited island is quite a sight to behold, as it is home to a lonely tree that struggle to live despite being surrounded by salt water. Unfortunately, the tree’s popularity might just be the death of it.

On Tuesday, the Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization led a team of Thai reporters to Koh Khai Hua Roh in order to observe the country’s loneliest tree. They knew that photos of the lonely tree shared on social media had been attracting an increasing number of tourists to the island, but they had no idea how much damage that could produce.

According to The Nation, several small branches of the tree were found broken off, the tree’s exposed roots appeared to have been stepped heavily on to the point where the outer cover has peeled off (剥落), and the trunk appears to be tilting (倾斜) more than it did a few years back.

Koh Khai Hua Roh island is so tiny that it can only accommodate up to five people at a time, but local authorities admit that selfie-addicted tourists sometimes crowd there in much greater numbers, with some even climbing the poor tree.

The Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization plans to kickstart an educational campaign to hopefully teach people to conserve iconic landmarks like Thailand’s loneliest tree. It also plans to take more drastic actions, like restricting the number of tourists allowed to visit the island and making the island only accessible in certain seasons.

【1】The name of the island is related to .

    A.a lonely tree

    B.a popular comic

    C.a controversial selfie

    D.a threatened tourist

【2】How is the loneliest tree according to The Nation?

    A.It is under protection.

    B.It proves inaccessible

    C.It has become less popular.

D.It is in a really bad state.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Ways to establish landmarks.

    B.Measures to advertise the island.

C.Responses to the damage from tourists.

    D.Actions to attract more tourists.

【4】From which is this text most probably taken?

    A.A geography textbook.

    C.A health magazine.

    D.A travel guide.
