二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There’s an old saying that goes, “ Good fences make good neighbors. ” With so many people forced to stay at home during the pandemic, some are happy to report that good fences can also make good friends.

In Minneapolis, the Olson family lives next door to 99-year-old Mary O Neill. Although Mary has an adult daughter in the area who visits once a week, with the rest of her relatives scattered, the pandemic left the old woman in seclusion (与世隔绝).

But as lockdown went on, Mary managed to develop a special friendship with one of her neighbors — Benjamin Olson, aged 2. Over time, Mary watched through the fences as Benjamin learned to walk, talk and eventually run and play. Despite the huge differences in their ages, Benjamin noticed his elderly neighbor, delighting in her presence. Between the two, they developed a game they could play over the fence. Benjamin would pass her a ball and she’d hit it back to him with her cane.

While others might remark on the 97-year gap between the two pals, when Benjamin sees Mary, he simply sees a friend, not a number. Although the pair’s special affinity (亲和力) definitely scores high on the cuteness factor, Benjamin’s mum Sarah and Mary’s adult daughter believe the relationship has been a lifeline that’s kept the elderly woman going through the long period of isolation (隔离).

As pandemic restrictions have lifted, Mary and Benjamin’s friendship continues to blossom on both sides of the fence — only now, the gates can be opened.

“Friendship can just happen so many different ways, ” Sarah told CBS. “ I’m just really happy they were able to form this on — isolation or not, pandemic or not. I’m happy because it means a lot to her and it means a lot to him, too. ”

    A.The lockdown over pandemic.

    B.Benjamin’s mother Sarah.

    C.Mary’s adult daughter.

    D.Many local people.

【3】What does the third paragraph focus on?

    A.Benjamin’s growth process.

    B.Mary’s attraction to Benjamin.

C.The game played by Benjamin and Mary.

D.The building of the friendship between Benjamin and Mary.

【4】What is Sarah’s attitude towards the friendship between Benjamin and Mary?

  • 22、   When a laptop or smartphone battery starts losing its power, the only options are to buy an expensive replacement, or just keep it plugged in all the time. But a woman Mya Le Thai may have found the answer to this problem.

Thai was frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degraded over time, until they failed to charge fully. She did not like having to keep her laptop connected to an electrical outlet to keep it powered on. So, she decided to do something about that problem. At first, she and her team at UC Irvine thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion(锂离子) batteries to last forever.

Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. Most of these batteries have a life span of about 7,000 charging cycles before they die. One of the reasons lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin. A human hair is thousands of times thicker, for example. Nanowires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries.

But, Thai had a theory-the nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel(凝胶). She and her team tested this theory. “It was a long process and a lot of work,” Thai said. The team tried many coverings for the wires. PMMA, a type of plastic, was one of them. The nanowires were coated with PMMA and cycled through charges 200,000 times. The PMMA-coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever, without losing charging ability.

Thai hopes to continue her research to understand why this gel works so well and to see if any other gel could create better results and she is enjoying the publicity about her discovery. She said she never expected her research to get media coverage. “It’s kind of cool,” she said. “I’m really glad people are showing interest in my work and not just in the work itself, but also in technology and energy.”

1What can we infer about nanowires?

A.They last only 7,000 charging cycles. B.They are too weak to carry electricity.

C.They are not suitable to use in batteries. D.Their thinness is a cause of batteries degrade.

2What might be Thai and her team’s breakthrough?

A.Coating nanowires in gel. B.A new kind of battery.

C.New materials for batteries. D.A new way of charging batteries.

3What may be the best title for the passage?

A.The options of batteries for wireless devices B.A woman invents a life-long battery.

C.Mya Le Thai discovered Nanowires D.The reasons for batteries degrading

  • 23、   Getting active in midlife could be as good for you as starting young when it comes to reducing the risk of an early death, researchers have suggested. But experts say the study also shows that the benefits fade once exercise declines.

“If you maintain an active lifestyle or participate in some sort of exercise from youth to middle age, you can reduce your risk for dying,” said Dr. Pedro Saint-Maurice, the lead author of the research. “If you are not active and you get to your 40s - 50s and you decide to become active, you can still enjoy a lot of those benefits.”

The study was based on data from more than 300,000 Americans aged 50-71 who undertook a questionnaire(问卷)in the late-1990s. They were asked to recall the extent of their moderate to vigorous (剧烈的) leisure exercise at different stages of their life. Researchers then used national records to track who died in the years up to the end of 2016. After taking into account factors including age, sex, smoking and diet, the team found that those who were exercising into middle age had a lower risk of death than those who had never carried out any leisure exercise. However, when the team looked at different patterns in the way people were active over their life, it found a surprise.

Men and women who started exercising at the age of 40-50 reduced their risk of death from any cause by about 35%. The benefit was similar to that seen for people who reached and maintained similar activity from their teens or 20s onwards.

However, the study found that the protective effect of exercise did not last forever. People whose levels of leisure exercise decreased by middle age had no difference in the risk of an early death to those who had always been couch potatoes. “If you have been active and you slowly decrease your exercise participation as you age, you lose a lot of the benefits that we know are associated with exercise,” Saint - Maurice said.

But the study has limitations, including that it is based on individuals recalling how active they were many years before. What’s more, the research looked only at death records, not other aspects of health such as levels of sickness and disease. Nonetheless, he said, the message was positive. “This adds to the growing body of evidence about the importance of physical activity and exercise across he life course, and indicates that it is never too late to start.”

1Which of the following is TRUE about the study?

A.The study took about two decades to complete.

B.The study involved around 30,000 elderly Americans.

C.Questionnaires and interviews were the sources of data.

D.The participants in the study took regular physical exercise.

2According to the passage, what does “a surprise” (Para.3) refer to?

A.The earlier you exercise, the greater your health benefits will be.

B.The benefit of getting active in midlife is similar to that of starting young.

C.Participating in exercise from youth to middle age benefits one’s health greatly.

D.The benefits of exercising in midlife will decline once you stop exercising.

3It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A.women benefit more from vigorous exercise than men do

B.people exercising from their teens can maintain health forever

C.an active lifestyle will not necessarily bring positive health benefits.

D.participants’ memories may affect the reliability of the study result

4Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.Getting Active When Young B.Health Benefits Fading With Age

C.Never Too Old to Start Exercise D.Exercise Having Its Limitations

  • 24、In the United States, people often use large amounts of salt to remove dangerous ice from roads and walkways in the winter. But when the spring arrives, all that salt can really damage plants in the garden. Salt is the chemical sodium chloride.

Salt pulls water from living cells, like plant roots and the healthy ground soil around them. So, spring growth may show up lighter in color than normal, or, in the worst cases, plants may simply die. Rain can wash away much of the salt, permitting some older plants to live. Salt can also be removed by pouring a large amount of water on the ground where plants are growing. But the best action is to simply use less salt.

There are, of course, other things that can be used to cover for sodium chloride. One is the chemical calcium chloride, which does less damage to plants and melts ice faster than salt. It also works when the temperature is below negative 17 degrees Celsius. Salt loses some of its effectiveness at temperatures below negative 12 degrees.

Still, calcium chloride does put chloride ion (氯离子), which plants don’t like, into the soil. It is also more expensive and can do more damage to cars. Calcium magnesium acetate, also called CMA, has become a popular alternative. It is made by combining limestone, a type of rock, and vinegar. It breaks down naturally so it does not damage plants or soil. It stays on roads and does not hurt cars.

CMA does have problems, however. It is most effective at around negative 9 Celsius, just like salt. And it is better at stopping ice from forming rather than removing it. So, it is best placed on a road before the temperature gets very cold. Some materials other than salt—such as sand or very small pieces of wood—can also work against ice. But they can be very messy.

【1】What is the poor result by using salt to remove ice?

A.All the plants are likely to disappear overnight.

B.The plants may well look much weaker than ever.

C.Some older plants can’t resist being washed away.

D.A large amount of water is trapped on the roads.

【2】What does the underlined part mean in the 3rd paragraph?

    A.Remove.

    B.Wrap.

    C.Collect.

    D.Replace.

【3】What is the advantage of calcium chloride?

A.It functions well at cold temperatures.

B.It provides chloride ion to the soil.

C.It can melt ice just above minus 17℃.

D.It brings no damage to plants or soil.

    【4】The author wants to show

A.many materials can be used to remove ice.

B.using less salt is beneficial to your plants.

C.sand and pieces of wood are eco-friendly.

D.too much salt is used on the roads in the USA.
