二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   London has a new magazine. But it is not printed on paper. Everyone who has a television can receive it because it is on TV.

In order to read this magazine you have to have a decoder. Each page of it is numbered, so you only have to dial the number to choose which subject you want to read about. There is a wide choice — everything is included from cooking to the latest sports news.

If you want to read the news, the first thing you have to do is to turn to the index (索引) page which has an easy-to-remember page number, 100 for example. The news is on pages 101 to 109 so you push out the numbers and the news appears written across your screen. Perhaps you want to go out in the afternoon, so you press 181, and a brightly coloured weather map appears on the screen. But the weather is terrible so you decide to go shopping and dial 162 for a list of the week’s best bargains. But should you drive or take the train? To answer that question you only have to press 189 for the traffic report. It is very simple to use. But probably the best thing about the service is that it is being updated all the time. Journalists type new material directly onto the screen and whole pages of the magazine can be replaced in minutes.

London already has three services. One is transmitted (输送) by ITV while the other two on BBC. BBC engineers do not think that their idea will ever replace books and newspapers because they can be taken with you everywhere. But many people would agree that this is a breakthrough as great as the invention of printing, which could change not just our reading habits but our whole way of life.

1We can know from the passage that _________.

A.the magazine can be bought at any local newsstand

B.most of the postmen in London will lose their jobs some day

C.the readers can get all kinds of information staying at home

D.everyone can read this magazine if they have a television

2In the sentence “Each page of it is numbered”, here “it” refers to the  ___________.

    A.decoder B.magazine

    C.subject D.program

3According to the passage, the “decoder” is used to help people ______.

A.find out the sum of certain figures

B.go shopping and have other entertainment

C.receive some special TV program for entertainment

D.read the information transmitted by TV signals

4The passage is mainly about __________.

A.a new magazine printed in London

B.a popular TV program about magazines

C.an up-to-date way of keeping up to date

D.a technology helping people to communicate

  • 27、“You can either travel or read, but either your body or soul must be on the way.” The popular saying has inspired many people to read or go sightseeing. Destination: Kenya, Africa

Recommended book: West with the Night, 19429, by Beryl Markham

    Destination: Istanbul, Turkey

Recommended book: My name Is Red, 1998, by Orhan Pamuk

The book, featuring a peak masterpiece of the Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Orhan Pamuk, has been translated into more than 50 languages and published around the world. • 28、We all do little things to boost the way we feel and think throughout the day. Something as simple as taking a walk or eating a piece of chocolate can brighten your mood almost instantly, thanks to certain chemical reactions that occur in the brain. 【1】If you're going through something complex, you need a more permanent practice. That's where writing comes in.

As Mental Health Awareness Month begins,it's worth learning about the ways that you can use writing to support your mental well-being.【2】

Use writing for mindfulness. Mindfulness is a tried-and-true technique for improving mental wellness, but can writing have the same effect? 【3】 By focusing on a particular moment and getting it all out there on the page, you can free yourself from any of the other concerns that are crowding your mind. This way, you can use writing as an approach to mindfulness and as a way of relieving stress.

Another benefit to writing is its ability to clear your mind of worries, negative thoughts, or sources of pain. 【4】 Fortunately, writing can speed up the process of restoring mental clarity.

【5】People were more likely to talk to others about a painful event after writing about it privately, which powerfully suggests that writing can indirectly lead to reaching out for support, which can mean even greater healing and relief.

Through the process of populating a blank page with letters and words, writing can be a useful mental health tool that both records your experiences and allows you to work through them.

    A.Become more self-aware.

B.These pleasures are just temporary, however.

C.There's real power behind the pen—here's why.

D.Writing is also the best method of self-care treatment.

E.Clearing your brain of negative thoughts can be really tough work.

G.This is because writing tends to stimulate questions about your life and direction-

  • 29、There will be days when you do not have much to do. Perhaps because you are waiting for someone else in a different department or a different company to respond to a request. As the clock ticks past 5 pm, there may be no purpose in staying at your desk. But you can see you hard at work and, more important. they can see you. So you make an effort to look busy.

Some of this may he a self-perpetuating(白生自存)cycle. If bosses do not like to go home before their workers, and workers fear leaving before their bosses, everyone is trapped. Staff may feel that they will not get a pay rise, or a promotion, if they are not seen to be putting in maximum effort. This is easily confused with long hours. Managers, who are often no good at judging employees 'performance, use time in the office as an alternative.

The consequence is often wasted effort. Rather than work hard, you work hard to make bosses think that you are. Leaving a jacket on your office chair, walking around purposefully with a notebook or clipboard and sending out emails at odd hours are three of the best-known tricks. After a while this can result in collective self-cheat that this pretence is actual work.

But presenteeism(出勤)has more serious consequences. As well as reducing productivity, this can increase medical expenses for the employer. According to a study, these costs can be six times higher for employers than the costs of absenteeism among workers. To take one example, research published in the British Medical Journal found that Japanese employees with lower-back pain were three times more likely to turn up for work than in Britain. As a result, those workers were more likely to experience greater pain and to suffer from depression. What could be more upset than being in pain while feeling trapped at work?

None of this is to say that employers haven't the right to expect workers to be in the office for an acceptable proportion of time. Unavoidably there will be a need for some(preferably short)meetings. Dealing with colleagues face-to-face creates a feeling of trust and friendship, allows for a useful exchange of ideas and enables workers to have a better sense of their needs.

But modern machinery like smartphones and laptops is portable. It can be used as easily at home as in the office. Turing an office into a prison, with prisoners allowed home for the evenings, does nothing for the creativity that is increasingly demanded of office workers as routine tasks are automated. To be productive you need presence of mind, not being present in the flesh.

【1】Why do employees still stay at their desk after work?

    A.To keep their bosses company.

    B.To get more overtime allowance.

C.To put extra efforts into their work.

D.To give their bosses a good impression.

【2】One of the consequences of presenteeism is that___________?

A.employers will pay workers higher wages

B.workers will suffer physically and mentally

C.workers will perform their job more efficiently

D.the effort put in by workers will finally pay off

【3】Working in the office for some time can help_________?

    A.build better social bonds

    B.bring bosses more profits

    C.organize a meeting efficiently

    D.satisfy workers 'material needs

【4】What would the author probably agree with?

    A.Presenteeism can't help develop creativity.

    B.Absence from work reduces productivity.

C.Presence at work will be more joyful.

    D.Technology makes life puzzling.
