二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When international aid is given, steps must be taken to ensure(确保)that the aid reaches the people for whom it is intended. The way to achieve this may not be simple. It is very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in another nation. The United Nations Organization UNO could undertake to direct the distribution of aid. Here however rises the problem of costs. Also tied with this is time. Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.

More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster,it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times. A common proverb says,"Give me a fish and I eat for a day, teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime. "If we follow this wise saying,it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example,a country could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites. Even a small country is able to help less developed nations. Sometimes what is taken for granted, like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems. It does not cost much to share such simple things. Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary come back from time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves. Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands.

Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses. Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships to consider. Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run and must continue to be given in the event of emergencies. However,in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.

1According to the author, how could international aid reach the victims in time?___

    A. By solving the cost problems.

    B. By solving the transportation problems.

    C. By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO.

    D. By setting up a body of devoted people in every country.

2What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence?___

    A. Providing food is vital.

    B. Teaching skills is vital.

    C. Learning to fish is helpful.

    D. Looking after others is important.

3The second paragraph is developed mainly___.

    A. by comparison B. by contrast

    C. by example D. by process

4Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands?___

    A. A water plant B. Financial support.

    C. A medical team D. An exchange program.

  • 28、   Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings, such as import, export, report and transport. All these words, you can see, have the same “port”, which come from the Latin word, meaning “to carry” or “to move” from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning, which we call the prefix the meaning changes. “Import” means “to carry in” or “to bring into a country”, “export”, “ex” means “out of”, so this word means “to carry out of the country”, “re” means “back”, so the “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody”, “transport”, “trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across one place to another”.

Let’s look at the following words: supporter, reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix, thus meaning a person who completes the verb. So supporter means somebody who supports. A reporter is somebody who reports. Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports, and so on.

1In the first sentence the word “part” means _______.

    A.different beginnings and different endings

B.the same part that has several meanings

    C.the root of the word

D.the same root that has different meanings

2By adding a prefix or a suffix to a root, we can get a word which has _______.

A.the meaning of a Latin word B.a different meaning

C.the meaning of “in” or “out of” D.a lot of meanings

    3We can get a noun _______.

A.just by adding “er” to verbs B.by changing a prefix

C.only by adding “er” to a root D.by adding a suffix to a verb

4According to the passage, if we talk about a man of refinement, you may guess that he must be _______.

A.a man having good manners and education

B.a person who should be educated

The Wisconsin village also puts on cultural events like the Heidi Folk Festival and Swiss Volksfest.

    Solvang, California

Located near Santa Barbara, Solang is a charming California city with Danish roots.  A group of immigrates from Denmark founded Solvang just over 100 years ago to create a Danish home away from home. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

My friend Jack had a birthday party recently and I wanted to make him something special to show how much our friendship meant to me. I pulled out the craft box and spread everything out on the table: markers, paints, seasheils, and construction paper. I stared and stared but couldn’t think of what to make.

Just then, my cat Charlie leaped on a pile of paper. The paper, and Charlie, slid across the table. I thought, “It looks like Charlie’s skateboarding (滑滑板) Skateboard! That’s it.”

I ran to my room and found an old photo of Jack and me with our first skateboards.

I worked all afternoon on the coolest picture frame ever. It was shaped and colored just like the skateboard Jack had in the photo.

I spoke to myself as I applied the final coat of paint. “I bet this will be Jack’s favorite present!”

When I arrived at the party, I set my gift behind all the others so Jack would open it last. The whole time we were playing games, I kept glancing over at it. Then Jack’s grandmother brought out the cake. Jack blew out the candles. Finally, it was time to open presents. Jack opened a book, a paint set, and a baseball cap. The next-to-last thing was a long heavy box.

“I got two of the same things for my birthday,” Justin told Jack. “So I’m giving one of them to you.”

Jack opened the box and pulled out a super-nice skateboard. “No way!” he shouted. “This is exactly the one I’ve been wanting. Let’s go outside and try it!”

“Um, Jack,” I said, “aren’t you going to open my gift?”

“Oh, of course!” He ripped (撕开) open the present, not even noticing the funny cartoons I’d drawn on the wrapping paper. “Hey, I remember this photo. Thanks, Arizona!” He put down the picture frame, grabbed the new skateboard, and called, “Come on, everyone! We can all take turns!”

    Everyone ran outside—everyone except me.
