二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It’s always exciting to begin a new job. But among the frenzy (激动) of meeting new colleagues, starting new projects, and building new skills, there can be a stressful pressure to succeed. A big part of your success is determined by how quickly you are able to digest lots of information, which can be very hard. 【1】.

    * Manage yourself

When you notice information overload, don’t ignore it and don’t panic. Say to yourself, “I’m in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It’s okay to feel this way.” 【2】. Remember that emotions can help you better understand yourself and your values.

    * Sort your information

【3】. It keeps what it needs more immediately in our short-term memory, and it mixes together information we may need to use in the future to store in our long-term memory. For the information that’s not needed, our brain acts like a garbage management, recycling, and deleting it.

    * 【4】

Organizations often have digital knowledge management systems to store and take important information. You can do the same to reduce brain burden. I recommend creating a Word or Google document in which you write down information that your brain doesn’t need to remember or store.

    * Reduce task-switching

Multi-tasking isn’t good for you physically or mentally and is worse for your productivity and cognition (认知). 【5】. You can go for longer than that, but be sure to take a break. Focused activity is less taxing than multitasking, but you can’t keep working endlessly.

C.That problem is much easier to understand and solve

D.Here are some methods to deal with the information overload

E.For greater results, focus on one task for around 25 minutes

F.Our brain is like a clever piece of equipment that “takes in information”

G.This self-talk helps normalize the situation and makes the emotions easier to handle

  • 27、   The Kendama World Cup

Old-fashioned fun is making a comeback!

Many kids are putting down their electronic devices and picking up an ancient toy. It is called a kendama, and it possibly dates back to the 16th century.

The kendama is a small wooden hammer with three cup-shaped ends and a spike on top. A wooden ball with a center hole is attached by string to the hammer. The goal is to make the ball land in a cup or on the spike. It sounds simple, but there are over 1,000 kendama techniques and tricks to master.

The game’s popularity began to grow after the Japan Kendama Association was started in 1975. Today all ages participate in various competitions, including the Kendama World Cup(KWC).

The two-year-old event, which opens in Hatsukaichi, attracts people from all over the world. Players choose 10 different tricks from an approved list. They are then awarded points corresponding to the level of each trick.

A new Kendama World Cup winner will be named tomorrow in this popular sporting event.

1What does “old-fashioned fun” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.An old cup. B.An ancient game.

C.A clever trick. D.An electronic device.

2What does a Kendama look like?

    A. B.

    C. D.

3What does the last but one paragraph imply?

A.Every KWC lasts two years. B.The KWC is held every two years.

C.Players can choose tricks freely. D.Different tricks get different points.

4What do we know from the last paragraph?

A.A new KWC is being on. B.The winner of this KWC is very popular.

C.The Kendama is newly-born. D.KWC will be named after the new winner.

  • 28、Whether we can achieve what we want depends largely on whether we can stay motivated(有积极性的) most of the time. 【1】 Is the difficulty of better achievements widening from the previous one? Or is there a brick wall too high to climb up? To help you stay motivated, you can learn to adopt these four things that successful people do to keep themselves motivated all the time.

They stay focused on the big picture. Most of us tend to lose focus on the big picture because things at work can get so repetitive and boring. You may start to complain in your office. 【2】 “Look at me! I’m starting to turn into a dead man walking.” You’ll start to question whether your goal is worth fighting for and guess what? 100% of the time, it’s worth it once you’ve achieved it. So keep your eye on the goal all the time.

They write their ideas down all the time. How to stay motivated to do more? Successful people do that by writing down their ideas all the time. Why? 【3】 You will never know whether one idea in your notebook could be the next revolutionary big thing.

【4】 Many successful people always have praises for their partners for getting them where they are today. If your partner is not supportive on things you want to achieve, communicate to find out why he/she doesn’t like what you’re doing. The end goal is to let your partner know that you’ll put all your effort into getting a brighter future for both of you.

They have lots of fun. If fun is not part of your plan, you would probably lose sight of your goals easier. 【5】 If you simply do not enjoy doing what you do, how could you accomplish a tough goal?

    A.They read a lot.

    B.They have extremely supportive partners.

C.Taking everything too seriously is a sure method for failure.

D.Soon you’ll pass your negative comment to your colleagues.

E.So what is stopping you from being motivated to achieve more?

F.Because they understand that ideas don’t stay long in their heads.

G.Then you’ll have enough time to plan your day before starting work.

  • 29、   We were silently waiting on the platform in the late afternoon. There he was, my 80-year-old grandfather with his silvery hair. And there I was, a teenage girl in my jeans and T-shirt. His aged but still clear blue eyes were taking in the scene as I wondered how I was going to get through the next two days. Why did I ever agree to accompany my cranky grandpa on a train ride from New York to Georgia?

No one else wanted to be the fellow traveler since my grandfather refused to fly. In contrast, I loved to fly since I wanted to get to the destination as quickly as possible. No matter what anyone told my grandfather about the comfort and safety of flying, he refused to book a flight, saying, “It’s not just the trip: it’s the adventure of getting there.”

With my first step onto the train, the journey was already different from what I expected. The train was modern and filled with friendly travelers. We settled into the club car, where we could enjoy food and drinks while watching the scenery pass. Instead of listening to my music, I became a willing audience and learned family history that I had never had the time or patience to learn. With teary eyes, he told me that going to family events was hard for him since my grandmother died. It always made him think about those who were no longer with us. For the first time I felt I understood him. I gained a new appreciation for our time together.

In this fast-paced world, we often miss important moments. There is great significance in listening to elders who offer a piece of their history and experience. I may be more open to opportunities to stay with my grandpa. Life isn’t just about the destination: it’s about the journey.

1What does the underlined word “cranky” in paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Healthy. B. Selfless.

    C. Strange. D. Outgoing.

2What made the author change her attitude towards staying with her grandpa?

    A. Her grandpa s appreciation of her.

    B. The new understanding of her grandpa.

    C. The sad stories of her grandmother.

    D. Her grandpa’s missing her relatives.

3What can we learn from the text?

    A. Travelling by train is more comfortable than by plane.

    B. Caring for elders needs a lot of creativity.

    C. There always is beautiful scenery along the journey.

    D. Listening to elders will help us learn a lot.

  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

When Bryan Anderson noticed an old lady, caught on the side of the road, he knew she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out with his motor still running.

Even with a big smile on his face, she was worried. He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. After reading her mind, he introduced himself as Bryan Anderson and began to help her.

Learning that she had a flat tire, without a second thought, Bryan set out to work and took hours to get it right, dirty and tired. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.

With everything done, the lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened. Bryan never thought about being paid. This was helping someone in need. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

Byan told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person help the way he gave her, and he added, “And think of me to let the chain of love pass on.”

Hearing that she owed him nothing, with tears rolling down her cheeks, the old lady drove off with a deep “Thank you”.

A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. In the dirty- looking restaurant, the whole scene was unfamiliar to her; a waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. Then she remembered Bryan.

    Paragraph 1:

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a $100 bill.

    Paragraph 2:

That night when she got home from work, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written.
