  • 27、   John Blanchard was studying the crowd making their way through the station. He was looking for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose.

When reading a book in a Florida library a year before, John became interested not in the contents of the book, but in the notes penciled in the margin (空白处). The handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and beautiful mind. He discovered the former owner's name in the front of the book: Miss Hollis Maynell.

He located her address and wrote a letter introducing himself. The next day he was shipped overseas to serve in the army. During the next year, they grew to know each other through the mail and their friendship developed. John requested a photograph, but she refused, saying if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return home, their first meeting was suggested-7:00 pm at the Grand Central Station in New York.

She wrote, "You'll recognize me by the red rose I wear on my coat." So now John was in the station to meet the girl with a rose.

As a pretty and slim girl in green came over, John noticed her blue eyes like flowers in spring. He walked directly towards her, entirely forgetting she was not wearing a rose. As John came closer to her, he saw another woman with a red rose stood nearby. Well past 40, this woman had graying hair done under a worn hat. Seeing the girl in green walk quickly away, John felt as if he were split (劈开) in two. He desired to follow that girl, but longed for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and supported him.

The woman looked gentle and sensible. John went to her, saying, "I'm Captain John Blanchard. You must be Miss Maynell. I am glad to meet you here. May I take you to dinner?"

She replied with a smile, "I don't know what this is about. But the lady in green who just went by, begged me to wear this rose on my coat. She said if you asked me out to dinner, I'd tell you she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"

1John was eager to know the former owner of the book because ________.

    A. he was very interested in the contents of the book

    B. he was impressed by the notes written by the owner

    C. the book offered him practical and valuable advice

    D. there was address of the former owner in the book

2What happened to John after trying to get in touch with Miss Hollis Maynell?

    A. He began to serve the army abroad. B. He was seriously wounded in the war.

    C. He went on a business tour in Europe. D. He asked Miss Maynell for a photo.

3What do we know about the woman with a rose?

    A. She was Miss Maynell’s close companion.

    B. She was a conductor working in the station.

    C. She knew nothing about John’s appointment.

    D. She was paid to carry out a love test on John.

4Which would be the best title of the text?

    A. The Meeting in the Station B. A Meeting by Accident

    C. A Soldier and a Girl D. Love Test

  • 28、   More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics (文物) have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1.67 million pieces are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.

Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.

The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels (渠道) to demand the return of relics.

In 2003 a priceless bronze pigs head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao (企业家) Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.

Although buying back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache.

In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database (数据库) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.

1What is the passage mainly about?

    A.How to recover cultural relics.

B.The efforts to recover Chinese cultural relics.

C.Stanley Ho donated a bronze pig’s head to Beijing.

D.Chinese cultural relics were stolen by the Anglo French Allied Army.

2Most of lost Chinese cultural relics .

A.have been recovered by the Chinese government B.were bought for little money by foreigners

C.are owned by private collectors D.are housed in foreign museums

3The underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “ “.

    A.possible B.difficult C.popular D.careful

  • 29、   Skeptics are strange a lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of the human activities to the environment and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.

Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some industry–funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.

So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”

Such one–sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible”.

A critical eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.

1Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s book?

A.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.

B.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews.

    C.Industry-funded media present confusing information.

D.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.

2The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to _____.

    A.voice a different opinion

    B.find fault with Lomborg’s book

C.point out the value of scientific views

D.challenge the authority of the media

3What does the underlined word “informed” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.wrong B.reliable C.wise D.careless

4What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?

A.To warn the public of the danger of half-blindness with reviews.

B.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.

C.To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in information.

D.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.

As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends. I spend a lot of time looking after my pets6(proper) but I find it worthwhile.

In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more7 (independence). I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If8(have) a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun9them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live10rich and full a life as you do.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Many exams even include the answers. Today, Open Course Ware offers materials from 1,800 undergraduate and graduate courses. These 7 from Physics to Political Science. Visitors can learn the same things as MIT students learn. But as the site points out, Open Course Ware is not an MIT education. Visitors receive no credit toward a degree. Some materials from a course may not be available, and the site does not provide 8 with teachers. Still, MIT says that the site has had forty million visits by thirty-one million visitors from almost every country. Sixty percent of the visitors are from outside the United States and Canada. Students and educators use the site, including students at MIT. But the largest number of visitors, about half, are self-learners.

Some professors have become well-known around the world as a result of 9 online. Walter Lewin, a physics professor at MIT, is 10 popular. Fans enjoy his entertaining lectures. MIT Open Course Ware now includes materials for high school. The aim is to improve education in Science, Technology, Math and Engineering.

Change is an unavoidable part of everyday life. It happens as time passes or as a consequence of one's decision. Changes may be positive or negative depending on how we understand them. Whereas some people are happy to live a life of routine, others accept change and prefer a challenging world where events are unpredictable

From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable

On the other hand, people who don't want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can   manage a new task

Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modem life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving. Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.
