28、   Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century, and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In the first year after it was published, 300,000 copies of the book were sold in the United States alone.

The strength of Uncle Tom’s Cabin is its ability to show slavery’s effect on families. Stowe’s characters freely debated the causes of slavery, the Fugitive Slave Law(逃亡奴隶法), the future of freed people, what an individual could do, and racism. In the 1950s, poet Langston Hughes called the book a “moral battle cry for freedom.”

It is said that Abraham Lincoln greeted Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1862 by saying, “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.” Whether the story is true or not, there is some connection between Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Civil War. The Civil War rose from a mixture of causes including regional conflicts between North and South, economic forces, and concerns for the welfare of slaves. The four-year war almost destroyed the United States. Uncle Tom’s Cabin contributed to the outbreak of the war by personalizing the political and economic arguments about slavery. Uncle Tom’s Cabin helped many 19th-century Americans determine what kind of country they wanted.

Immediately after its publication, Uncle Tom’s Cabin was both praised as an achievement and attacked as inaccurate. Liberal abolitionists(废奴主义者) felt the book was not strong enough in its call to immediately end slavery, disliked Stowe’s tacit(暗含的) support of the colonization movement, and suggested that Stowe’s main character Tom was not forceful enough. 29、Over half of Tokyo’s residents don’t think the postponed 2020 Olympics should be held in 2021, backing either a further delay or complete cancellation because of fears for the coronavirus, according to a poll(民意调查) published on Monday.

The survey carried out by two Japanese news organizations is only a single data point, but comes after health experts warned that even a year’s delay may not be enough to hold the Games safely.

The poll found 51.7 percent of respondents hope the Games in 2021 are postponed again or canceled, while 46.3 percent want to see the rescheduled Olympics go ahead. Among those opposed to the 2021 Games, 27.7 percent said they want them canceled altogether, while 24 percent would prefer a second postponement.

The telephone poll, conducted by Kyodo News and Tokyo MX television between Friday and Sunday, received 1,030 replies. Of those who said they want to see the Games held in 2021, 31.1 percent said the event should be on a smaller scale, while 15. 2 percent said they want to see fully developed Olympics.

Tokyo 2020 was postponed in March as the coronavirus spread across the globe, causing the worst disruption(中断) to the Olympics since two editions were canceled during World War II. The Games are now scheduled to begin on July 23, 2021, although they will still be known as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Officials from Japan and the International Olympic Committee(IOC) have warned that it will not be possible to postpone them again, and even the year-long delay has created significant financial and logistical(后勤的) headaches.

From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable

On the other hand, people who don't want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can   manage a new task

Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modem life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving. Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.
