26、If you were to see the Great Banyan Tree in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden from a distance, you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a forest. Covering more than 14,493 square meters, the tree is the widest in the world. It is so large that it covers more ground than the average Wal-Mart.
No one is quite sure exactly how old the Great Banyan Tree is due to the lack of official records, but experts guess that the tree is at least 250 years old. The earliest references to the tree have been found in travel writing dating from the 19th century. Over the years, the tree has gone through a lot. Not only has it survived two major disasters in 1864 and 1867, but its main trunk also caught a deadly disease. And because of the disease, the main trunk of the tree needed to be removed in 1925.
Despite going through such a major surgery, the Great Banyan Tree proved resilient (能复原的).This is because of thousands of aerial roots (气生根) that grow from the tree's branches and go into the ground. And that is what gives the impression of a full forest rather than a single tree.
Taking care of this large tree is so difficult that it takes a 13-member team. Not only do they make sure the tree stays healthy, but they also “train” the roots to grow correctly.
In Indian culture, banyan trees are among the most venerated. It is considered to be a sacred tree in various religions. For example, in Hinduism, it symbolizes longevity and represents the great God, Brahma. In Buddhism, banyan trees are also significant because it is believed that Buddha sat beneath one for 7 days.
Want to see the Great Banyan Tree for yourself? The botanical garden is easily accessible by car or bus from the Kolkata city center. As well as the Great Banyan Tree, you can also see a wide variety of plants from all around the world, making it an amazing journey.

27、 In Kenya, blind students and those with poor eyesight were still using Braille books for their studies until recently.
Kenyan schools for the blind are now beginning to use technology that provides material in an audible (可听见的) form. This has expanded possibilities for the students and taught them new ways to communicate with technology.
17-year-old Lucas Mwanzia has been attending computer classes at the Thika School for the blind for the past two years. He is in the eighth grade now. He started school at a later age because of his poor eyesight. But using the new technology, he can search the Internet for biology class. He says the technology bas opened doors that once were closed and Braille books are costly and you have to spend a lot of money to buy one. With computers, the books are available at little or no cost.
Zachary Muasya was born blind. He is now one of the school’s teachers. He has been teaching the students how to use the technology for about two years now. He says the technology opens up possibilities that can level the playing field for his students. “Assistive technology equips the learners with many skills that really make them independent in life,” says Muasya.
The assistive technology costs$1,000 to set up. But a non-governmental organization called InAble has provided it to the schools at no cost. Peter Okeyo, the program manager at InAble, says blind students using the technology may still face difficulties when they move to higher education. He says students who have used the technology through high school might not have it at the university they attend. Those students might have difficulties if they have to go back to Braille, he adds.
Four out of Kenya’s 11 schools for the blind are using the technology. InAble says it will provide the financing for the remaining schools to join the effort.
【1】Why did Lucas Mwanzia start school so late?

【3】What can we know about the technology according to Zachary Muasya?
A.It must be learned for two years
B.It can improve blind students’ sight
C.It helps to make the playing field flatter
D.It makes blind students live by themselves
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Peter Okeyo is a blind person who works at InAble.
B.InAble is an organization that belongs to American government.
C.Not all the schools for the blind are now equipped with technology.
D.Blind students using the technology can’t finish higher education.
28、Bumblebees(大黄蜂) are clever: when pollen(花粉) is short and plants near the nest are not yet flowering, they have learned to force them to bloom. Research published on Thursday in Science shows that the insects puncture the plants’ leaves, which causes them to flower about 30 days earlier than they otherwise would. How the technique developed and why the plants react by blooming remain unclear.
Consuelo De Moraes, a chemical ecologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, says she and her teammates were observing one kind of bumblebee in an unrelated experiment when they noticed the insects were damaging plant leaves and wondered why. “At first we thought they might be feeding on the plants,” she says. And because previous research had shown stress could cause plants to flower, they also wondered whether the bees might be creating blooms on purpose.
To find out, the team placed bumblebees together with tomato plants in cages. The bees soon cut several holes in the leaves of each plant. As a test, the researchers tried to copy the bumblebee damage in additional plants with a knife. Both sets of plants with injured leaves bloomed faster, but the ones punctured by the bees flowered weeks earlier, suggesting that chemicals in the insects’ saliva(唾液) may be involved as well.
Next, the researchers moved out of the laboratory to see whether bumblebees would continue to damage nonflowering plants near their nest even if blooming plants were available farther away. They did so. The findings suggest the bees’ behavior is an adaptation that improves food-hunting efficiency(效率).
In the future, scientists could test how the behavior may have developed and how widespread it is among other wild bumblebees, as well as what is happening in plants after a bee bite. Understanding those questions could help us better face the climate change.
【1】What does the underlined word “puncture” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.bite
B.touch
C.kiss

A.The stress causing plants to flower.
B.The difference in plants’ flowering time.
C.The bumblebees’ feeding on the plants.

【3】Why did the researchers copy what the bumblebees did?
A.To prove a knife cut can work as a bee bite.
B.To figure out what helps plants flower faster
C.To find out why bumblebees damage plants.
D.To show bumblebees’ saliva helps plants bloom.
【4】What have the researchers made clear?
A.What happens in plants after a bee bite.
