二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Ahead of the summer travel season , airlines in the United States usually compete to sell tickets and fill seats. But the airlines that operate the grounded Boeing 737 Max planes have a new problem : there are not enough seats to meet the demand .

The revenue(收益)is right in front of them . They can see it , but they can’t meet it , said Mike Trevino. He is an airline industry expert for Southwest Airlines Pilots Association .

The grounding of Boeing’s 737 Max came after two deadly crashes in five months . Southwest Airlines is the world’s largest 737 Max operator. The company has 34 of the planes .

American Airlines operates the second-most, with 24. These planes have been removed from use until at least August, The grounding of the planes has led Southwest to cancel 160 of its 4,200 daily flights between June 8 and August 5.

American Airlines will cancel 115 daily flights, or 1.5 percent of its total summer flights . Southwest only flies Boeing 737s. It had estimated $ 150 million in lost revenue between February 20 and March 31 --- mostly because of MAX cancellations .

The 737 Max was grounded worldwide in March following a deadly Ethiopian Airlines crash . It came five months after a Lion Air crash in Indonesia. All on board both planes died .

Boeing is under pressure to provide additional software. Experts are examining the original software as a possible reason for the crashes .

Boeing must prove to worldwide regulators that the plane is safe to fly. That process may take more than 90 days. Planes in the United States are usually mostly full during the months of June , July and August .

1It can be inferred from the second paragraph that__________.

    A. the competition among the airlines is becoming more and more fierce

    B. Boeing needs some time to prove to the world that their 737 Max planes are safe

    C. after the two deadly crashes, more and more have decided not to travel by air

    D. Southwest Airlines suffers the most in revenue

2What is the total number of the daily flights of American Airlines in summer?

    A. About 4,200. B. About 115. C. About 160. D. About 7,600.

3What is it that possibly led to the two deadly crashes according to experts?

    A. The terrible management of the airlines.

    B. The inexperience of the pilots.

    C. A bug in the operating system.

    D. The pressure from Boeing.

4What will be probably discussed in the next paragraph?

    A. some ways to fill the seats

    B. how to earn enough with each seat

    C. how long the problem will last

    D. how to deal with the increasing cost

  • 27、Six red wolf pups were born in the wild, which marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2018.

Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads, and farms, the wolves began to die out. In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed. It was designed to protect endangered animals, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.

The Red Wolf Recovery Program kept fourteen of those wolves in captivity to protect them. By 1980, red wolves were believed to be extinct in the wild. Luckily, the wolves did well in captivity, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Between 1987 and 1994, 60 adult red wolves were released. Over time, those wolves spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. In 2008, there were 47 wild pups born. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild.

Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. In 2018, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, no wild pups were born at all. So the news that six pups were born in the wild this year is a huge boost. The good news isn’t an accident. Currently, there are over 240 captive red wolves in the recovery program. The FWS has released some captive wolves into the wild, and worked to pair these animals with wild wolves. The FWS has also taken pups born in captivity and had them raised by wild female wolves. With luck, they will have even more company next year.

【1】What is one of the factors of red wolves’ dying out?

    A.Living in the wild.

    B.Human activities.

    C.Lack of health care.

    D.Being overprotected.

【2】Why does the author list so many numbers in Paragraph 3?

A.To explain the reason why more red wolves were born.

B.To encourage other programs to catch more red wolves.

C.To show the success of the Red Wolf Recovery Program.

D.To tell readers the exact number of endangered red wolves.

【3】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?

A.Red wolves pups were found accidentally.

B.Red wolves will no longer die from car accidents.

C.More pups were born during the previous three years.

D.The FWS works hard to increase the number of red wolves.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Endangered red wolf pups born in the wild.

B.The number of endangered animals in the US.

C.The red wolf recovery program made by FWS.

D.Methods of preventing red wolves from dying out.

  • 28、   Three months from retirement (退休), I was anything but excited. Retirement felt more like an end than a new beginning.

A new beginning didn’t come until I saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a little dog. I called to see if I could just have a look. To my surprise, they agreed. Within seconds of laying eyes on that small black-and-white fur ball, there was no way I went home without her. I named her Kelly.

I kept her in a large box, with some toys. She was very energetic. Even after a long walk, she still required attention and care until I played a game with her, which almost drove me crazy. So I turned to my cousin. “Get her into a good dog school. A dog like Kelly is in need of friendship with other dogs,” he replied.

It was amazing to watch Kelly run around a yard with other dogs. Best of all, I noticed how well-behaved Kelly was after the play. One day, a strange woman called, “Would you be able to watch my dog for the weekend? I’ll be happy to pay.” Word spread until I was making money from nursing dogs. Kelly loved the friend, and I had to admit I did, too.

I set up the Hot Dggity Doggie Camp company in 2007. At first people didn’t quite understand what I was doing. Gradually, word got around that you could drop off your dogs and picked them up after work at Hot Diggity Doggie. Business was growing rapidly. Every day the dogs were there to greet me. They needed me. And I needed them. Nowadays dog day care isn’t unfamiliar around here. In fact, now I have quite a few competitors in town. The more happy dogs, the better.

1How did the author first feel after she retired?

    A. Excited. B. Disappointed. C. Encouraged. D. Moved.

2What’s the author’s reaction when she saw Kelly for the first time?

    A. She was lost in thought. B. She thought for a long time.

    C. She felt confused. D. She liked her at once.

3What does a little dog need most according to the author’s cousin?

    A. Good food. B. Toys. C. Friends. D. Competitions.

4What does the author intend to express in the last paragraph?

    A. Her Hot Diggity Doggie is still a new try.

    B. Many people don’t understand her job.

    C. The author is fond of her present work.

    D. The author doesn’t like competition.

  • 29、   They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.

But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.

For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological measures of emotion.

According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.

The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallres of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.

To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow to the reward system in the brain.

“People who got less pleasure from music had lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.

The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will not be active. Thus, it will produce less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine. As a result, people get less pleasure from music.

If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good song isn’t one of them.

1What do we know about people with musical anhedonia?

A.They usually avoid listening to music.

B.They like to listen to certain types of music.

C.They believe cultural differences are larger than music.

D.They can’t feel the pleasure that music brings to others.

2What was the purpose of the study?

A.To learn how music influences people’s emotions.

B.To understand the relationship between music and the body.

C.To learn what music people love the most.

D.To see whether music works in the same way for all people.

3What happened to the participants when they listened to music?

A.Those who enjoyed music had more dopamine produced.

B.Those who enjoyed music had slower blood flow.

C.All of them had faster heartbeat and sweated more.

D.They showed different physical signs as the music changed.

4Which is the best title of this passage?

A.How people get pleasure from music?

    B.Why music isn’t for everyone?

    C.What brain produces with music?

    D.A new research of listening.
