二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Lucy Hughes, a 24-year-old English inventor, has used skin and scales (鳞)from fish to create a new kind of plastic that will break down in about six weeks. Her invention won this year's James Dyson Award.

Ms. Hughes was very aware of how wasteful many products are. Plastic items (物品),for example, are often made from new plastic, used once for a short time, and then thrown away. She decided to challenge herself to make something out of waste instead.

Fishing is a big business in England, and the University of Sussex where Ms. Hughes studied wasn't far from the coast. She spent some time studying the fishing business, and the things that were thrown away. She was amazed by the amount of waste from fish that gets thrown away.

After some tests, Ms. Hughes decided that the fish skin and scales seemed like the most likely parts for her product. But then she needed something to bind (hold the material together) with. She found that red algae (红藻)was the best binder.

Ms. Hughes called her finished product “MarinaTex”, which is clear and feels like plastic, but stronger than regular plastic of the same thickness. MarinaTex is also cheap to make since it's made from fish waste. Ms. Hughes says that the waste from one Atlantic cod (a fish) could make 1,400 bags. The process of making MarinaTex also doesn't use much energy. Most importantly, MarinaTex doesn't take hundreds of years to break down.

Ms. Hughes thinks that one of the best uses for MarinaTex will be in some kinds of food packaging where plastic is currently being used. Ms. Hughes is looking forward to moving ahead with her idea. She wants to try to make her recipe for making her plastic even better. She hopes the award money will help her with the process of getting MarinaTex into use as quickly as possible.

【1】Why did Lucy Hughes invent MarinaTex?

    A.To turn waste into treasure.

    B.To win James Dyson Award.

    C.To gain people's wide attention.

D.To help the local fishing business.

【2】What is MarinaTex's greatest advantage over traditional plastic?

    A.It is of higher quality.

B.It is more convenient to use.

C.Its production cost is fairly low.

D.It can break down in a short time.

【3】What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.MarinaTex has been put to practical use.

B.Lucy Hughes hopes for more fund support.

C.Lucy Hughes intends to improve her invention.

D.MarinaTex will replace regular plastic in food packaging.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Red Algae: the Best Binder to Hold Materials

B.Young Inventor Creates Plastic from Fish Skin

C.Fish Waste Has Affected the Environment Seriously

D.Lucy Hughes: an English Inventor Won James Dyson Award

  • 28、   After receiving several complaints (投诉) from the customers, the owner of an Italian restaurant in Mooresville, North Carolina, has taken the decision to forbid children under the age of five. Although facing criticism in social media, he says that business has grown greatly.

The owner describes his restaurant as a traditional and wonderful restaurant, but young children cry, scream or play on iPads at full volume (音量). It disturbs other customers and clearly doesn't fit in too well in a wonderful meal. So the owner, Pasquale Caruso, set up a "no child under five" rule in January 2017.

“Some customers complain, get up and leave because children are bothering them, and the parents are doing nothing," Caruso told the newspaper. “It starts to feel like it isn't the Caruso's anymore, that it's a local pizzeria instead." Caruso added that he didn't like taking this kind of decision, but in the end, he had to do what was best for his business. Since then, people have been voicing their opinions on the restaurant' s unofficial Facebook page.

“You have forbidden small children. Then who are the next: blacks, Jews, native people? Shame on you!" one Facebook user called John commented. But for every critical comment, there are some that congratulate Caruso’s for taking such a brave decision. “Thank you for taking a stand," some people wrote on its Facebook page.

“I'm the parent of 5. Don't bring little ones to a nice restaurant or expect them to quietly sit still for an hour. They CANNOT DO IT,”" one person posted. Caruso said the online support for his controversial (有争议的) rule is reflected in the success of his business. The number of customers has risen from 50 a day to around 80.

  • 29、The kakapo, a bird that lives in New Zealand, is not designed for survival. Weighing up to 4 kilograms, it is the world's fattest parrot. It mates (交配)only when the rimu tree is in fruit, which happens every few years. It developed gradually in the absence of land-based natural enemies, so instead of flying above the trees it walks like a duck across the dry forest floor. When it moves unsteadily across something that might kill it, it will stand still.

Such unusual characteristics turned it into fast food for human settlers, and for the cats and rats they brought with them. It seemed to have disappeared by the 1970s, until scientists came across two undiscovered populations in the country s south. These survivors were eventually moved to small enemy -free islands, where researchers have spent decades trying to get them to breed (繁殖).

The scientists' patience is finally rewarded. The rimu was in fruit this year, and more than 80 chicks hatched, making this the best breeding season, on record. Many have. survived into adolescence, increasing the number of adult kakapos by a third, to 200 birds.

Another danger to the kakapo is a lack of genetic diversity. This is one reason why fewer than half of kakapo eggs hatch. By arranging the genome (基因组) of every living bird, scientists can identify closely-related individuals and put them on different islands. Every bird is fitted with something to track its slightest movement. If a female mates with an “unsuitable” male, the process can be stopped.

All these efforts cost almost New Zealand $1 .3 million this breeding season. Yet the kakapo's future still looks unsafe. Earlier this year a severe disease tore through the population. And tiny as the number of kakapos is, space is running out on the two islands where most of them live. New enemy-free settlements must soon be found.

【1】Which of the following is a danger for the survival of the kakapo?

A.It is the smallest bird in the world.

B.It lacks exercise and usually stands still.

C.It adapts slowly, in genetic development.

D.It can't respond actively when facing danger.

【2】In what way was the scientists' patience rewarded?

A.Adequate food supply for kakapos was guaranteed.

B.New settlements for kakapos were eventually found.

    C.Kakapos were becoming increasingly aggressive.

D.Kakapos' birth rate reached the highest level.

【3】Why did the scientists put kakapos in different islands?

    A.To stop closely-related kakapos mating.

B.To help kakapo families live together.

C.To maintain the production of rimu fruit.

D.To protect kakapos from natural enemies.

【4】What does the author think of the efforts to protect the kakapo in New Zealand?

    A.They are successful.

    B.They are inadequate.

    C.They are doubtful.

    D.They are unsafe.
