二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When referring to family gardening, we are talking about a way to take care of the plants so that we can have a healthy, safe and environmentally friendly production. 1 The following simple tips will help keep the garden in perfect condition.

2 It is important to remember that we cannot stop watering the garden, always in the coolest hours of the day. Not to forget to do it every day, we can install an automatic irrigation(灌溉)system to make sure that our garden will remain fresh. It is also important to take care of the lawn(草坪)and the best way of protection is to cut it regularly, as this will remain healthy and attractive and avoid being annoying. 3

Plants, flowers and trees from the outside also require special care during the summer because due to the high temperatures, pests and fungus(菌)may appear. In these cases it is advisable to use insecticides(杀虫剂)or other products in the last hours of the afternoon. 4

And what about the furniture in our gardens? We must take into account some tips to protect them. If we decide to leave them in the open, we can cover those of plastic with towels and for the furniture of iron, it is always advisable to apply a coat of paint to keep them shiny. 5 Finally, for those elements of outdoor wood, we can give them a coat of protective oil so that they look like new.

    A.Water the garden regularly.

    B.Avoid the high outside temperature.

C.And do remember not to overuse them in order not to burn them.

D.However,we should not cut it too much because it will become weak.

E.Clean the furniture of natural materials with salt water to keep them strong.

F.Some conditions are necessary for a correct development of a green garden.

G.Consider the grouping of plants that need the same needs of water, light, soil, etc.

  • 27、While elephants born without tusks (长牙)are not unheard of,they normally form just 2 to 6 percent of the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where an astonishing 33 percent of female elephants born after the country’s civil war ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may appear to be just a coincidence, Joyce Poole, an elephant behavior expert, has another theory. The researcher thinks we may be witnessing unnatural evolution of the species due to the constant hunting of elephants for valuable ivory.

Poole says before the country’s 15-year-long civil war, the 100,000-acre park was home to over 4,000 elephants. However, by the time the conflict ended in 1992, about 90 percent of them had been killed for ivory to help finance weapons (武器)and meat to feed the soldiers. Of the less than 200 survivors, over 50 percent of adult females had no tusks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the park’s tuskless elephant population has grown greatly.

This is not the first time researchers have observed a great change in the population of elephants. At Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park and Lupande Game Management Area, areas which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% of elephants 25 years or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published found that the number of tuskless females at the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania went from 10.5 percent in 1969 to almost 40 percent in 1989, largely due to illegal hunting for ivory.

The recent ban on ivory in both the US and China should help get rid of, or at least reduce, elephant hunting. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females, to change the trend.

【1】What is the probable cause of the phenomenon mentioned in Paragraph 1 ?

    A.Illegal hunting.

    B.Constant farming.

    C.A pure coincidence.

    D.Natural evolution.

【2】Why did people kill so many elephants during the civil war in Mozambique?

A.To get funds by selling ivory.

    B.To develop new weapons.

C.To provide food for local people.

    D.To make ivory products.

【3】Which of the following had the earliest record on tuskless elephants?

    A.Gorongonsa National Park.

    B.South Luangwa National Park.

    C.The Ruaha National Park.

    D.Lupande Game Management Area.

【4】What does the underlined phrase “the trend” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Elephants facing greater danger.

    B.Elephants growing more slowly.

    C.Fewer female elephants staying alive.

    D.More female elephants being tuskless.

  • 28、   Ireland’s Achill Island has always been a popular European tourist destination. However, since last April, the small island of just 2,600 residents has gained worldwide fame thanks to the magical reappearance of a beach that was washed away over three decades ago.

The chain of events began in 1984 when residents of Dooagh, one of the five settlements on the island, awoke to a surprising sight: their beautiful sandy beach had been washed away by strong Atlantic storms. There were only rocks and rock pools left. For over 30 years, only small amounts of sand returned to the once unspoiled shores. The area’s tourism industry slowly declined, and the handful of beachside hotels, pubs, and restaurants gradually closed as well.

Then around Easter last year, something magical happened - an unusual ten-day tide blanketed the bare 300-meter long rock beach with hundreds of tons of soft golden sand. Scientists suspect that the sand had been gathering offshore for months and was transported to the beach by the high winds and powerful waves.

The locals are delighted to have their beach back, especially as it is attracting thousands of visitors wishing to witness the power of nature, with their own eyes. However, Sean Molloy, manager of Achill Tourism, cautions against going into the cold waters just yet, saying, “Because of the sand coming in, we don’t know how safe the beach is now because currents ( 洋流 ) could be changed and it’ ll take a little bit of time.” He instead recommends visitors enjoy the soft sand and leave the swimming to the dolphins that frequent the area.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Dooagh Beach has pulled a disappearing and reappearing act. It disappeared in the 1890s, for over 30 years, before returning in 1927. However, the locals are optimistic that this time around, the beautiful sand is here to stay.

1What has made Achill Island famous worldwide recently?

A.An unusual storm. B.The decrease in the number of residents.

C.The return of its beach. D.The building of a new tourist destination.

2What happened to Dooagh in the past three decades?

A.Tourism went down gradually. B.Restaurant developed slowly.

C.Storms attacked frequently. D.Rock pools disappeared completely.

3What should tourists avoid according to Sean Molloy?

A.Spoiling the shores. B.Getting into the rock pools.

C.Playing with dolphins. D.Swimming near the beaches.

  • 29、How to Forgive Someone

Forgiving someone who has done something wrong and hurt you can be difficult and painful. 1  While this is natural, holding on to your anger causes you to become more painful. For this reason, it is necessary to choose to forgive, not for the other person, but for yourself. The following suggestions will help you forgive someone.

Release your anger. Let go of all the negative feelings you have towards the other person. Allow yourself to cry, go into nature, and talk to someone you trust, or do whatever helps you release these bad feelings. 2

Give it time. Forgiveness does not come easily. 3 It is something that can be realized little by little every day.

4 Once you've had time to cool down and think things through, you may clearly explain to the other person, in a calm manner, how his actions have hurt you and how they have made you feel. This is very important, or you will bottle up feelings of anger towards the other person, making true forgiveness impossible.

Focus on the future. Once you have made the decision to forgive someone, you need to forget the past and focus on the future. 5 It might be just what your relationship needs.

    A.Get angry at someone.

B.Tell the other person how you feel.

C.Your first reaction is probably to hold on to your anger.

D.It requires self-control, determination and, above all, time.

E.Look on the bright side of the future and make a fresh start.

F.If not, the bad feelings will cause you to become more painful.

G.It's unnecessary to rebuild a relationship with anyone or let him go.
