二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   I was always pretty independent, but living alone made me even more at peace. Living alone helped me grow as a human being. Caitlin Moscatello had a similar experience:

“I was the queen of my own 400-square-foot-castle for three years, and looking back, I can see that that short stretch of time was crucially important to establish my independence. It started with small things: I negotiated my rent on my own, created a household budget (预算) on my own, hashed out a savings plan on my own. I signed up for half-marathons, and actually ran them. I tried hot yoga, and hated it, but whatever, I tried it. And then, the results had a bigger payoff: I put in late hours at work, because I didn’t have anyone asking me ‘Will you be home for dinner?’ and got promoted. I met a guy on one of many fun, little dates, and he turned out to be the love of my life. I also got gutsier(有勇气的): I traveled abroad alone, several times, without thinking twice about it.”

I also think my time alone makes me a better partner now that I share my life (and my space) with another person. The real secret of living alone? You’re not living alone, you’re living with yourself. And the better you know yourself — what truly makes you happy, melancholy, frustrated or bored — the better you can deal with it without depending on others. Which means you won’t be putting pressure on other people in your life to do that work for you.

Living alone doesn’t mean you become a hermit(隐者, 逸士). In fact, you’ll likely find yourself more excited to see people and go out when your home space is all your own. And studies have shown that single people get out more — to social gatherings, community events, volunteering — than those who are coupled up. Or as Aletheia Luna writes, “It’s human nature to take our friends, family and loved ones for granted. Living alone, devoid of the presence of others, helps us to appreciate these people more when they are around.”

1According to the 2nd paragraph, living alone is not good for ________.

    A.making decisions B.keeping up one’s health

C.getting off work on time D.having one’s independence

2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Caitlin Moscatello was a queen. B.The writer got married.

C.Living alone can avoid feeling sad. D.Aletheia Luna is a hermit.

3What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase in the last paragraph “devoid of”?

    A.full of B.free of

    C.short of D.because of

Almost all airlines charge on baggage and they charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? It's easy to reduce the amount of stuff you pack, 【4】. So you can take less and still make more outfit combinations,

    Pack your own snacks

Unless you're flying internationally, it's rare that your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. So don't rely on what's on the small menu and instead take some of your own snacks, such as chocolate bars, homemade biscuits or fruit. All make wonderful travel foods. 【5】.

  • 29、   Born in Oak Park, Illinois, on January 17, 1922, Betty White was the only child of Horace and Tess White. Indeed, while most young kids were begging their parents for pets, White said she was the lucky little girl whose parents went for a walk and would come home with a dog or a cat.

The personal passion for animals has often mixed with her professional work. She created, produced and hosted a 1971 animal show called the Pet Set, which featured both wild animals and her friends’ own pets. She also wrote the 2011 book Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo and even lent her voice to the animated series (动画系列) of Pound Puppies.

“I’m the luckiest person in the world—my life is divided in absolute half: half animals, half show business,” she said.

She started working with the Los Angeles Zoo in the 1960s. “My interest in zoos started early on, because my mom and dad went to the zoo often, not just to please their little girl, but because they enjoyed the experience,” she wrote in her book. She worked with the Los Angeles Zoo because she was kind of shocked that Los Angeles had such a poor zoo inside. She said, “I’ve never been one to stand outside and criticize (批评). I’d rather get inside and see what’s going on, see how I can help.”

“Zoos don’t only exhibit animals; they do a lot of wonderful protection work,” she said. “Many people have a closed mind on zoos. They think no animal should be kept in zoos. Instead, they should all be in the wild in their own habitat. Well, of course, that is a myth.”

1White said she was lucky because __________.

A.she could often read books on animals

B.her parents often kept pets at home

C.her parents often took a walk together with her

D.she lent her voice to the animated series of Pound Puppies

B.White started working in a zoo several years ago.

C.Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo was written in 1971.

D.White’s interest in zoos was developed under the influence of her parents.

3What did White do after seeing the Los Angeles Zoo?

A.She just stood outside to criticize.

B.She got inside and saw the animals.

C.She decided never to visit the zoo again.

D.She worked with the zoo and did something to help.

4What is White’s attitude towards zoo?

    A.Supportive. B.Indifferent (漠不关心的).

    C.Hopeless. D.Disapproving.
