  • 26、   Travelling can be a fun way to gain life experiences, but what if you’re a student and don’t have enough money for a trip? Don’t worry. Here are some useful tips.

Save: This probably is the most important preparation for travelling. Cut expenses(花费) to fatten your wallet so you’ll have more choices about where to go and how to get there.

Plan ahead: Don’t wait until the last minute to plan your trip. Giving yourself several months to get ready can mean security and savings.

Do your homework: No matter where you go, research the places you will visit. Decide what to see.

Travel books will provide information on the cheapest hotels and restaurants

Plan sensibly. Write down how much you expect to spend on food and hotels. Stick to(坚持) your plan, or you may not have enough money to cover everything.

Travel in groups: Find someone who is interested in visiting the same places. By travelling with others you can share costs and experiences.

Work as you go: Need more money to support your trip. Look for work in places you visit.

Go off the beaten path: Tourist cities may be expensive. You may want to rethink about your trip and go to a less known area. Smaller towns can have many interesting activities(活动) and sights.

Pack necessary things: The most important things to take are not always clothes. Remember to take along medicine in case you get sick and snacks in case you cannot find a cheap restaurant.

By planning sensibly, even students can enjoy their travel. Your travel experiences will be remembered for a lifetime.

  • 27、Everyone has worries, but what do you do with your worries?Whether your worries are big or small, you can take three steps to deal with them.

    【1】

The first step is to find out what you’re worried about. Sometimes you know it, but sometimes you might not. If you can’t make sure what your worries are, you will have more and more new problems in your life. So remember that you must try to find out the causes before you start to deal with them even if it might not be so easy.

Think of the ways to make it better.

【2】 Sitting there worrying is no fun and it won’t solve your problem. Grades at school are often a top worry for students. If you’re worried about grades, ask yourself these questions:

★How do I get ready for class?Do I review my notes even when there isn’t a test?

★Do I have a good place to do my homework?【3】

★Have I tried different ways of studying?

If your worry is about a fight you had with a friend, you might write down all the things you could do-write a note to him or her, invite him or her to a basketball game, apologize to him or her etc. Once you have a list of things you could do, you can choose the one that gets your friend back.【4】

    Ask for help.

When you are worried, you need to find someone to communicate with. 【5】 They will help you analyze(分析)your problems carefully and solve them easily.

A.Try to find out the causes.

B.Seek ways to make you feel happy.

C.Consult your teacher when in trouble.

D.You can turn to your parents, friends, or teachers for help.

E.There is always something you can do to help you feel less worried.

F.Actually the grades will improve when you deal with the homework seriously.

G.Things will become better if you are willing to think of various ways to deal with them.

  • 28、   Put an ice cube from your fridge into a glass of water. You have a piece of string(线) 10 centimeters long. The problem is to take out that piece of ice with the help of the string. But you must not touch the ice with your fingers.

You may ask your friends to try to do that when you are having dinner together. There is a saltcellar on the table. You must use salt when you carry out this experiment.

First you put the string across the piece of ice. Then put some salt on the ice. Salt makes ice melt(融化). The ice round the string will begin to melt. But when it melts, it will lose heat. The cold ice cube will make the salt water freeze again.

After a minute or two you may raise the piece of string and with it you will raise your piece of ice!

This experiment can be very useful to you. If, for example, there is ice near the door of your house, you must use very much salt to melt all the ice. If you don’t put enough salt, the water will freeze again.

1We must use _______ when we carry out this experiment.

    A.fridge B.some food C.a table D.some salt

2How long will it take to carry out this experiment?

A.More than three minutes. B.Five minutes or so.

C.Only one minute or two. D.About ten minutes.

3What is the task of this experiment?

A.Put the ice cube into the glass of water with the help of the string.

B.Take out the ice cube in the glass of water with the help of the string.

C.Take out the ice cube in the glass of water with your fingers.

D.Put some salt on the ice cube and then put the string across it.

4How many things at least are used in this experiment?

    A.Three. B.Four. C.Six. D.Seven.

  • 29、   In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.

Europe, on the whole, has the world’s most restrictive laws on animal experiments. Even so, its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive data than America.

Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’ lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.

Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe’s new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.

1What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The success of animal experiments should be ensured.

B.A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.

C.Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals.

D.Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.

2Which of the following statements is TRUE about animals used in the lab?

A.America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year.

B.Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all.

C.Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.

D.Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.

3Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments?

    A.Statistical studies.

    B.Computer models.

    C.DNA planted in animals.

    D.Tissue from dead animals.

4What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments?

A.They are not revealed to the public.

B.They are made into teaching materials.

C.They are collected for future publication.

D.They are not removed from the research topic list.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
