26、Six red wolf pups were born in the wild, which marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2018.
Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads, and farms, the wolves began to die out. In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed. It was designed to protect endangered animals, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.
The Red Wolf Recovery Program kept fourteen of those wolves in captivity to protect them. By 1980, red wolves were believed to be extinct in the wild. Luckily, the wolves did well in captivity, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Between 1987 and 1994, 60 adult red wolves were released. Over time, those wolves spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. In 2008, there were 47 wild pups born. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild.
Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. In 2018, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, no wild pups were born at all. So the news that six pups were born in the wild this year is a huge boost. The good news isn’t an accident. Currently, there are over 240 captive red wolves in the recovery program. The FWS has released some captive wolves into the wild, and worked to pair these animals with wild wolves. The FWS has also taken pups born in captivity and had them raised by wild female wolves. With luck, they will have even more company next year.

27、A favorite dish for purple sea urchins(海胆) living off the coast of California is kelp(巨藻). The problem is, those kelp forests are shrinking rapidly and that’s hurting the oceanic ecosystem. So a group of scientists carried out an experiment to see if these sea urchins can themselves become a dish.
Just off the coast, three divers get ready to jump in. They’re students from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. The task: Count purple sea urchins. Their professor, Luke Gardner expects they’ll find plenty of urchins. And that’s not a good thing. “What they do is they just eat everything in sight,” Gardner says. These purple creatures are eating up California’s kelp forests, which provide food and shelter for numerous sea animals.
The problem began around 2014. That’s when Gardner says warmer ocean temperatures began affecting the reproduction of kelp. It’s also when a disease killed off sunflower sea stars, a killer of purple sea urchins. Therefore, the purple sea urchin population grows very fast.
The divers bring Gardner quite a lot of purple sea urchins. What’s inside is the part we eat, the uni (海胆黄) —a type of delicious food in Japanese cuisine. “The problem with these purple sea urchins is that when you open them up, sometimes there’s nothing in there. And they might be a little smaller compared to market-sized urchins,” says Gardner.
Then, it is time for the taste test. The class crowds into the kitchen of the restaurant Aubergine. Here, chef Justin Cogley serves uni from around the world. He opens up the purple sea urchins, taking the orange uni out and prepares it on a fried potato. “Honestly, it’s rich and buttery,” Cogley says. His conclusion? He’ll serve it.
It’s a tasty end to the project. But this could be just the beginning. A company called Urchinomics has been selling its human-raised urchins in Japan. Now, it is working to secure a site in California. It’s all in an effort to save the state’s kelp forests and help the thousands of animals that depend on them.
【1】What is the scientists’ experiment about?
A.Turning purple sea urchins into a dish.

D.By making comparisons.
【3】According to Gardner, what’s a problem with purple sea urchins?
A.Their uni tastes like bad butter.
B.They don’t all have uni inside.
C.They can’t be raised by humans.
D.Their size is beyond the market standard.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Save California’s Kelp by Eating Purple Sea Urchins.

28、The population of the capital Luxembourg City doubles every working day thanks to the flood of workers, and in the morning and evening rush hours, there often comes traffic block. It’s a familiar difficult problem but here they’ve come up with a novel solution.
From next year public transport will be free for everyone. The number of people taking the public transport is far from what is expected and so this idea has been brought up, which of course results in some argument.
This is what’s being built, a new tram system that will link trains in park-and-ride programs designed to make free public transport smooth and attractive. This is a big attempt by the Luxembourg government into whether people can be made to change the way they behave, because free public transport is great for existing commuters. But the question is whether drivers can be persuaded to change their cars and traffic jams for commuting on public transport.
The designer firmly believes the system is so good and effective. Everyone will want to use it. Everyone can use it, young or old, rich or poor, and everyone can say to themselves it’s better to leave the car at home. But others consider it questionable.
Taxi drivers don’t seem worried about trams stealing their trade. Businessmen who come here are never going to take public transport. They’ll take a taxi because they have meetings to get to.
So Luxembourg’s plan is really a test, and it’s one that plenty of bigger nations will be watching. As we know, the way we move around shapes our cities, our lives, our work and our environment. Luxembourg is a very small country but this could be a very big idea.
【1】Why does Luxembourg City plan to make public transport free?
A.To reduce traffic jams.
B.To attract more businessmen.
C.To encourage people to avoid rush hours.
D.To help its citizens travel more comfortably.
【2】What can we infer about the result of the plan?
A.Taxi drivers’ business will be badly affected.
B.More people will choose to drive to and from work.
C.People’s daily behavior will be completely changed.
D.Taking public transport can save money for commuters.
【3】How does the designer feel about the system?
A.Hopeless.
B.Concerned.
C.Confident.
D.Regretful.
【4】What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To list the traffic problems Luxembourg faces.
B.To show how Luxembourg controls its population.
C.To give people advice on how to get around Luxembourg.
D.To introduce Luxembourg’s new public transport measure.
29、 One of the most popular street food found in China is no doubt the barbecue. A new series, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife.
Shown on June 20, the series has had more than 25 million clicks on the video site bilibili.com. To find the most popular barbecue stalls, the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV series telling stories from late night informal Japanese bars.
“I’m happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic―night food,” Chinese Barbecue’s director Chen Yingjie said. “However, in terms of the tone, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. In contrast, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively spirit. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.
The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather reserved and polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.
The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is to present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients, ways of cooking, and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do,” said Chen.
【1】What do we know about Chinese Barbecue?
A.It mainly talks about the most famous Chinese food.
B.It is thought highly of by most of the foreign tourists.
C.It has been becoming very popular on the Internet.
D.It shows the colorful nightlife in large cities of China.
【2】In which way was Chinese Barbecue different from Midnight Diner?
A.It focused more on the diners.
B.It showed more kinds of food.
C.It showed the eating habits.
D.It was less popular than Midnight Diner.
【3】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The importance of the barbecue to family.
B.The role of the barbecue in people’s relationship.
C.The influence of the barbecue on people’s lifestyle.
D.The influence of the barbecue on people’s manners.
【4】Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series?
A.To help the world understand China.

32、阅读下面短文, 根据内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
There are many benefits of public transportation. For example, public transportation makes it easier for people to get where they want and need to go. It also helps people save money, as the cost of maintaining a working vehicle is often much more than the cost associated with public transportation. The frequency of traffic jams and accidents may also be reduced when a person uses public transportation.
One of the main benefits of public transportation is the fact that it makes it easier for people to get around. Without public transportation, many people — especially those without cars — would be limited in where they could go and what they could do. With public transportation, however, people can get to school and work, get to the grocery store and to doctors’ offices, and visit relatives, even if they do not own vehicles. Public transportation serves people of all ages and from all walks of life, ranging from families, including their children, to business people on their way to the office, to the elderly.
Often, people complain about the cost of public transportation when the rates are raised. When compared to the cost of buying a car, many people find that choosing to ride public transportation is a much cheaper option.
When public transportation is available, many people choose to use it instead of driving to work and school. This is true even of many people who own cars, as they may prefer to ride to work on a bus or train rather than deal with traffic jams and parking frustrations each day. When people make this choice, the result is less traffic on the roadways, which means fewer traffic jams and less pollution. In fact, the choice many people make to ride public transportation may even translate into fewer car accidents and vehicle-related deaths and injuries. Additionally, the use of public transportation also means less gas is consumed each year.
