  • 27、Healthy knees aren't the main consideration in choosing high heels, but new research say chunky(宽厚的)heels are just as bad for the knees as spindly stilettos(细高跟鞋).“It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis (骨关节炎)and once you do it, it is too late," said Dr. Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School's department of physical medicine. "I compare it to smoking—one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime itis. Wide-heeled shoes feel comfortable, so women wear them all day long," Kerrigan said. "They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as bad for your knees."

In the study, researchers had twenty women wear two pairs ofshoes with three inch heels, one with a narrow heel and the other with a thick one. The scientists compared how much pressure was put on the women's knees by both types of shoes. The women also walked barefoot to test normal pressure. The scientists found that both types of shoes applied equal amounts of pressure to the knees. Compared with walking barefoot, the heels increased pressure on the inside of the knee by 26 percent. Increased pressure on the knee eventually leads to arthritis, experts say.

The idea that high heels are bad for your health isnt new--scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corms tohammer toes, tendonitis(肌腱炎),knee pain, sprained (扭伤)ankles and back problems. But in 1998,Kerrigan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis, a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage (软骨)surrounding the knee. The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky high-heeled shoes she noticed many women wearing. "This study confims what we all intuitively (直觉地)know that high-heeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health," said Dr. Glem Pfeffer, a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.

【1】Why do women choose chunky heels according to the passage?

    A.They want to walk comfortably.

B.Chunky-heeled shoes are cheaper than stiletto-heeled pairs.

C.Chunky heels do less harm to knees.

D.Chunky heels are not painful at all.

【2】What did the study mentioned in the second paragraph find?

A.Pressure on the foot is caused by high heels

B.The pressure is stronger while walking barefoot

C.Arthritis is always caused by pressure on the knees.

D.Both types of shoes have the same harm to the knees

【3】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Taking Healthy Knees into Consideration

B.High heels Do Harm to Knees

    C.Chunky Heels and Stiletto Heels

    D.When Wearing High heels

  • 28、Afroz Shah, a lawyer in Mumbai, hasn’t had a weekend off in four years. But he hasn’t spent this time preparing for court. His mission is to save the world’s oceans from plastic pollution.

It’s a calling he found in 2015 after moving to a community in Mumbai called Versova Beach. He had played there as a child and was upset to see how much it had changed. The sand was no longer visible because it was covered by a layer of garbage more than five feet thick — most of it was plastic waste. The unsightly(难看的)mess Shah had stumbled upon is part of a global environmental crisis. It’s predicted that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

In October 2015, Shah began picking up trash from the beach every Sunday morning. At first, it was just him and a neighbor, and then he began recruiting others to join in. Word spread and with the help from social media, more volunteers got involved. He’s now spent 209 weekends dedicated to this mission, inspiring more than 200,000 volunteers to join him in what’s been called the world’s biggest beach clean-up. By October 2018, Versova Beach was finally clean and Shah’s clean-up expanded to another beach, as well as a stretch of the Mithi River and other regions of India. So far, the movement has cleared more than 60 million pounds of garbage — mostly plastic waste — from Mumbai’s beaches and waterways.

While he continues to work as a lawyer during the week, Shah now devotes nearly all of his free time to this cause. He also works with coastal communities to tackle plastic pollution at one of the sources. In areas lacking sufficient waste management systems, Shah and his volunteers educate and assist villagers in reducing, managing, and recycling their plastic waste.

【1】What has kept Shah busy at weekends over the four years?

    A.Handling legal cases.

    B.Cleaning up the beach.

    C.Swimming in the ocean.

    D.Fishing on the coast.

【2】Why was Shah upset after moving to Versova Beach?

    A.The beach no longer existed.

B.The community was in a mess.

C.Many fish in the ocean were killed.

    D.There was severe plastic pollution.

【3】How did Shah carry out his mission?

A.By raising money to recycle plastic waste.

B.By encouraging others to join his clean-up.

C.By appealing to people not to throw garbage.

D.By devoting all his time to collecting garbage.

【4】Which of the following best explains the underlined word “tackle” in the last paragraph?

    A.Report.

    B.Predict.

    C.Deal with.

    D.Cover up.

  • 29、An artificial intelligence that navigates(导航) its environment much like mammals could help solve a mystery about our own internal GPS.

Equipped with virtual versions of specialized brain nerve cells called grid cells, the AI could easily solve and plan new routes through virtual mazes. That performance, described online May 9 in Nature, suggests the grid cells in animal brains play a critical role in path planning.

“This is a big step forward in understanding our own navigational neural circuitry(电路),” says Ingmar Kanitscheider, a computational neuroscientist at. The University of Texas at Austin not involved in the work. The discovery that rats track their location with the help of grid cells earned a Norwegian research team the 2014 Nobel Prize in physiology to medicine. Neuroscientists suspected these cells, which have also been found in humans, might help not only give mammals an internal. coordinate(协同) system, but also plan direct paths between points.

To test that idea, neuroscientist Caswell Barry at University College London, along with colleagues at Google DeepMind, created an AI that contained virtual nerve cells, or neurons, whose activity resembled that of real grid cells. The researchers trained this AI to navigate virtual mazes by giving the system reward signals when it reached its destination.

The AI bested a human expert player at solving the virtual mazes, and proved savvier than other artificial neural networks in planning ways through mazes larger than those traversed during its training. When a door opened to provide a shortcut through the maze, the new AI took the more direct route. By contrast, AI systems without artificial grid cells ignored the open door and took long the way around.

These findings support the idea that grid cells do more than help mammals orient themselves in time and space; they also help animals plan the most straightforward direction to destinations. AI also appears to be “a very powerful tool" for testing other neuroscience theories, Barry says. He and his colleagues suggest that virtual experiments on artificial neural networks that imitate different regions of the brain may eventually replace some animal testing.

But there are limitations to using AI to study the brain. Because the system is meant to learn on its own, researchers can't tell why the system made a specific decision, says neuroscientist Francesco Savelli at Johns Hopkings University, whose commentary also appears online May 9 in Nature.

【1】What's the function of the virtual grid cells?

A.Helping animals adapt to the environment.

B.Controlling the growth of nerve cells.

    C.Assisting the AI in finding a way-out.

D.Promoting the cooperation between AI robots.

【2】The underlined word “savvier” in Paragraph 5 most probably means“_________”.

    A.slower

    B.nearer

    C.earlier

    D.wiser

【3】We can infer from Paragraph 6 that________.

A.Animals are as intelligent as humans

B.Animal testing on the brain will be reduced in future

C.Humans will' be equipped with' the virtual grid cells

D.Grid cells are more important than other nerve cells

【4】What is Francesco Savelli unclear about?

    A.How the AI system works.

B.Ways of AI learning on its own.

C.How effective reward signals will work on a robot.

D.The relationship between different regions of the brain.

Note that there is one word more than you need.

    A Bad Idea

Think you can walk, dive, take phone calls, e-mail and listen to music at the same time? Well, New York's new law says you can't. And you'll be 1 $S100 if you do it on a New York City street.

The law went into force last month, following research and a(n) 2number of accidents that involved people using electronic gadgets when crossing the street.

Who's to3 ? Scientists say that our multitasking abilities are limited.

"We are under the impression that our brain can do more than it often can," says Rene Marois, a neuroscientist in Tennessee. “But a major limitation is the inability to4on two things at once".

The young people are often considered the great multitaskers. However, an Oxford University research suggests this idea is open to question. A group of 18-to 21-year-olds and a group of 35-to 39-year-olds were given 90 seconds to translate5into numbers, using a simple code. The younger group did 10 percent better when not interrupted. But when both groups were interrupted by a phone call or a(n) 6message, the older group matched the younger group in speed and 7.

It is difficult to measure the productivity8by multitaskers. But it is probably a lot. Jonathan Spire, chief analyst at Basex. a business-research firm, estimates the cost of interruptions to the American economy at nearly $650 billion a year.

The9is based on surveys with office workers. The surveys conclude that 28 percent of the workers' time was spent on interruptions and10time before they returned to their main tasks.
