二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Every year, more books on happiness are published. And every year, more people feel depressed because they do not see themselves as happy. They don’t remember or know what it feels like, and instead, they feel guilty that they aren’t as happy as everyone says they should be. This is really a sad state of emotional affairs.

The books, blogs, YouTube videos and advice columns (专栏) will tell you that if you read, exercise, stay busy, help others, and increase your intimacy (亲密) every day, then you too can be happy.

The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn’t mean you have to be sad, angry, or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice.

Contentment is somewhere between satisfied and peaceful. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you, but you don’t need to allow it to bother you. And that, my friends, is a very nice way to go through life.

I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments. Because I know about myself and I can respond differently. Doing this takes away stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment.

If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment — you do it regularly and early enough each day — it will help you go through any challenges you may have to face later.

Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control — such is life — but I am feeling pretty good because I actively living my purpose. I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same.

【1】What does the author want to stress by mentioning “Books on happiness in paragraph 1?

A.People find it difficult to agree on what happiness is.

B.Such books are so popular that they are sold out very soon.

C.Happiness is something easy to gain in our daily life.

D.Experts find it useless to argue about the value of happiness.

【2】When facing setbacks or sad moments, what does the author do?

A.He turns to such media as blogs.

    B.He definitely communicates with partners.

C.He adjusts himself and reacts positively.

D.He sees himself unlucky and feels depressed.

【3】What is the author most likely to agree with?

    A.Still water runs deep.

    B.Health is better than wealth.

C.Enough is as good as a feast.

    D.One good turn deserves another.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To introduce a novel experience.

B.To advocate a proper life attitude.

    C.To encourage studies on happiness.

D.To persuade us to work endlessly.

  • 27、In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.

As a writer, I know about winning contests – and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can resurface in our children.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

1What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A.A lot of amusements compete for children’s time nowadays.

B.Children have lots of fun doing mindless activities.

C.Rebecca is much too busy to enjoy her leisure time.

D.Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.

2What did the author say about her own writing experience?

A.She was constantly under pressure to write more.

B.Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

C.She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

D.Her road to success was full of pain and frustrations.

3Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contest?

A.She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

B.She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.

C.She wanted to share her stories with readers.

D.She had won a prize in the previous contest.

4The underlined sentence probably means that the author was _______.

A.trying not to let her daughter enjoy her own life

B.trying to get her daughter to do the thing as the author wished

C.making sure that her daughter would win the contest

D.helping her daughter develop real skills for writing

  • 28、Sign language, the primary form of communication of the deaf community, has been in use for hundreds of years. You're probably most familiar with American Sign Language, but sign language is used all over the world and has nearly 150 variations. Sign language interpreters can be seen everywhere from classrooms and graduation ceremonies to major sporting events.

When you think of sign language, you most likely imagine signers using their hands to form words and letters. However, hands are only one of the many different body language techniques that signers use to get their meaning across. In fact, much of the grammatical structure of sign language is not indicated by the signer's hands.

While the hands are responsible for forming the words themselves, markers called "non-manual elements" control much of the languages' grammatical structure. Non-manual elements (or markers) are body language techniques that don't use the hands. These include head movements, body positioning and facial expressions. Used together with the signs. these elements give sign language a subtle and extremely complicated grammatical structure. Linguist Andrea Lackner from Alpcn-Adria University in Austria did a study that shows just how important these non-manual elements are to sign language users.

The study assessed just how many different things non-manual elements can do. For this study, all participants were deaf users of Austrian Sign Language. They watched a video of someone using sign language, and they had to describe the purpose of each non-manual element. The results were very complicated. For instance, things as subtle as the direction of the signer's gaze can indicate whether or not a statement is hypothetical(假设的). A single head movement can indicate the emotion of a statement, a conditional or if situation, or a signer's feelings toward a hypothetical question. Body language is always important, but in sign language, it can change the entire meaning of a sentence!

【1】What do signers use their hands to do mostly?

A.To know people's words and letters.

    B.To understand people's meanings.

    C.To form the grammatical structure.

    D.To form words and letters.

    【2】What do non-manual elements include?

A.Words, sign language and body language.

B.Head movements, body language and signs.

C.Head movements, body positioning and facial expressions.

D.Body positioning, facial expressions and signs.

【3】What does the study show about sign language?

A.The main function of the non-manual elements.

B.The importance of the non-manual elements.

C.The influence of body language on sign language.

D.The influence of sign language on body language.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.Non-manual Elements Counts in Sign Language

    B.Ways to Avoid Being Misunderstood

    C.Grammatical Elements in Sign Language

    D.The Importance of Sign Language

  • 29、   Students wishing to safeguard(保护) their careers against changes in the job market should choose science rather than arts degrees, according to a survey of undergraduates(大学生).

Engineering and chemistry were considered to be the most “future proof”, as they are the courses most likely to lead to an enduring(持久的) and adaptable career.

Students polled by Pearson College were broadly optimistic(乐观的) that their chosen courses would prepare them for a world in which the job market could change dramatically (显著的,戏剧性的) during their working lives.

But opinions were sharply divided over which degrees were best for future-proof careers.

82 per cent of respondents believed engineering would lead to a future-proof skills, with 74 per cent believing the same of chemistry and 73 percent of computer science.

But just 33 per cent of undergraduates believed history would lead to a future-proof career, and 40 per cent English.

However more than two thirds (67 percent) of students thought the world of work would be significantly different or completely unrecognizable in 20 years.

The findings, published today, come after Education Secretary Nicky Morgan sparked controversy with claims that teenagers should steer clear of the arts and humanities and choose science or math subjects if they want to access the widest range of jobs.

She said that in previous decades students would only take math or science if they wanted to pursue a specific career such as medicine or pharmacy, but nowadays that “couldn’t be further from the truth”.

“If you want to do something different, or even if you didn’t know what you wanted to do...then the arts and humanities were what you chose, because they are useful-we were told-for all kinds of jobs. Of course now we know that that couldn’t be further from the truth, and that the subjects that keep people’s options open and unlock doors to all sorts of career are the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects.”

She also described math as “the subject that employers value most” and said that pupils who study A-level math will earn 10 per cent more over their lifetime.

“These figures show us that too many young people aged 15 are making choices which will hold them back for the rest of their lives,” she said.

1In order to guarantee your future job, which will you choose according to the survey?

A.Engineering or English. B.History or math.

C.Math or art. D.Engineering and chemistry.

2What’s the students’ attitude towards their chosen courses?

    A.Doubtful. B.Worried.

    C.Optimistic. D.Objective.

3How do you understand the underlined words?

A.It is far away from the truth. B.It’s close to the truth.

C.It couldn’t be close to the death. D.It reflects the truth.

4What did Nicky Morgan indicate (暗示,表明) in her claims?

A.If you want to do something different, the arts and science are what you choose now.

B.STEM subjects can make young people choose their future job freely.

C.At College, young people should make choices for their lives.

D.Math and science are considered to be the subjects that employers value most.
