  • 27、   Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristic that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high-voltage(电压) transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?

Heroes are catalysts(催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountain top. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr, we might still have segregated(隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large-scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain and the committee meetings endless.

1Although heroes may come from different cultures, they .

    A.generally possess certain inspiring characteristics

B.probably share some weaknesses of ordinary people

C.are often influenced by previous generations

D.all unknowingly attract a large number of fans

2According to the passage, heroes are compared to high-voltage transformers in that   .

A.they have a vision from the mountaintop

B.they have warm feelings and emotions

C.they can serve as empowering examples of noble principles

D.they can make all people feel stronger and more confident

3Madonna and Michael Jackson are not considered heroes because   .

A.they are popular only among certain groups of people

B.their performances do not improve their fans morally

C.their primary concern is their own financial interests

D.they are not clear about the principles they should follow

4Gandhi and Martin Luther King are typical examples of outstanding leaders who .

A.are good at demonstrating their charming characters

B.can move the masses with the skill and the charm

C.are capable of meeting all challenges and hardships

D.can provide an answer to the problems of their people

5The author concludes that historical changes would .

A.be delayed without leaders with inspiring personal qualities

B.not happen without heroes making the necessary sacrifices

C.take place if there were heroes to lead the people

    D.produce leaders with attractive personalities

  • 28、   We don’t know how different our future will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it.

At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet - even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today, so we will feel a little lonely.

Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.

Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.

We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as our health will be in a better condition.

Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future, we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather sanguine about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.

1Why will people probably feel a little lonely in 2050?

    A. Because the number of people will become much smaller.

    B. Because people won’t like making friends with each other.

    C. Because there will be less face-to-face communication

    D. Because people won’t communicate with each other much often.

2According to the passage, which of the following will happen in 2050?

    A. It won’t be difficult for people to travel to other planets.

    B. The way of spending holidays will be the same as that of today.

    C. The relationship between people will be more important than today.

    D. Our environment will be much more polluted with a growing number of cars.

3The underlined word “sanguine” in the last paragraph probably means ________.

    A. disappointed B. surprised

    C. curious D. optimistic

4What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. What our life will be like in the year 2050.

    B. How people will communicate in the year 2050.

    C. What high technology will appear in the year 2050.

    D. How people will travel and spend their holiday in the year 2050.

  • 32、阅读下面的短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Why You Should Never Cross Your Legs

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate(循环). This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart.

Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it's best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it's not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic (骨盆的) bones to move. Since your pelvic bone supports your back and neck: this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.

Leg crossing has long been linked to manners. In some countries and cultures leg crossing is looked on as casual, disrespectful, and altogether lower class. For the same reasons, many religions frown upon leg crossing in church. And what's good for the soul should be good for the feet as well. But respect aside, your health is affected in the long run if you are accustomed to crossing legs although you might not feel its immediate effects. The problem is really caused by siting in the first place. Don't make yourself comfortable--- get up and get moving.
