二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How northern Europeans beat the winter blues

Ask a child from northern Europe to draw two pictures — one on a rainy day and a second in the sunshine — and this is what you will get: in the first, as raindrops fall from the top of the page, the man behind the window has an unhappy expression. When a yellow sun sends out some light from the corner, the man is smiling.

Northern Europeans associate rain with sadness and sunshine with happiness. They think this is true because they are so aware of how their environment affects them.【1】In October 2008, a group of researchers examined the influence of different daily weather factors, including temperature, wind and sunlight, on 1,200 participants. The conclusion was that good or bad weather had little effect on people’s feelings.【2】A person who is upset on dark or cold days suffers from a negative mood (情绪), and he will be likely to experience a sad winter. This is the basis of an illness called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).【3】

AniKalayjian, professor of psychology at Fordham University, advises that we should take steps to strengthen the brain’s system against weather-driven mood changes. Research on SAD has been focused on the brain’s response to darkness and light. When our eyes detect darkness, the brain gives off melatonin, which starts sleep cycles.【4】It takes over to help us wake up and feel better when we detect light. “We can encourage people to take charge of their feelings,” says Kalayjian. “We tell them to leave the computers and the indoor games and get out there in the sun.【5】

A day of rain can potentially destroy your plan and affect your mood. But as the Scottish comedian Billy Connolly once said: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing.”

A.Yet that link has no scientific basis.

B.It is seriously doubted among the people who suffer from SAD.

C.It affects about10% of the population of northern Europe each year.

D.Another chemical called serotonin, however, can make people happy.

E.That’s when people can recharge their serotonin and get a better mood.

F.Most studies prove that a negative feeling is associated with bad weather.

G.They determined that people actually differ in their sensitivity to weather changes.

  • 27、   Some people would go through anything just to achieve their dream. Kasia Siwosz is proof.

Born in Poland, Siwosz began playing tennis at seven years old and developed the skills that helped her earn a top-50 ranking among the ITF Junior division (国际网球联会青少年赛). Siwosz wanted to do more with her life than just play tennis, which led her to seek chances that would also allow her to obtain a top education. “There’s no collegiate (大学的) sports in Poland and no culture of sports and academic study there. You can only do one, not both,” Siwosz said.

Her desire to have a quality education led her to America to follow her dream. While Siwosz was talented enough to begin her collegiate tennis career, she could only attend community college because she missed the deadline to apply to four-year schools, mainly due to misinformation provided in her home country of Poland.

When she had earned all her credits and was able to transfer, Siwosz made the decision to attend Baylor in Texas. Her friends from Poland put in a good word for the university, saying that it was a good fit because there were many international players at Baylor. “I thought it would be a good idea, but it really wasn’t what I thought it would be,” Siwosz said. “I wasn’t happy at Baylor. The level of tennis was high, but the academic standards were no match and I just wanted more.”

After one year at Baylor, Siwosz’s luck finally began to change when she made the decision to transfer to Berkeley, which was due in large part to Lee, a former Berkeley student. Lee, who is a keen tennis player himself, met Siwosz four years ago in Texas. “I knew she was unhappy there,” he said. “I saw the opportunity for her to come here.” Siwosz visited Lee in Berkeley. “I ended up loving this place and this school,” Siwosz said. “I came here a lot over the summer, I gave it a shot and I ended up with a Berkeley education and a spot on one of the best college tennis teams in the country.”

1Why did Siwosz want to leave her homeland for America?

A.Poland had no culture of sports.

B.Berkeley had always been her dream university.

C.She wanted to play tennis and have a good education.

D.She wanted to improve her tennis skills and get a higher ranking.

2Why didn’t Siwosz take Baylor as her first choice when she first arrived in America?

A.The level of tennis in Baylor was not high.

B.It was too late for her to apply to a school like Baylor.

C.Her home country of Poland forbade her to Baylor.

D.Baylor was not suitable for international students.

3How did Siwosz feel in Berkeley?

    A.She was unhappy there.

B.She had difficulty in keep up with others.

    C.She enjoyed studying there.

    D.She regretted going there.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

    A.How Siwosz realized her dream.

    B.How Siwosz left Poland.

C.How Siwosz became a tennis player.

D.How Siwosz transferred from Baylor to Berkeley.

  • 28、The kakapo, a bird that lives in New Zealand, is not designed for survival. Weighing up to 4 kilograms, it is the world's fattest parrot. It mates (交配)only when the rimu tree is in fruit, which happens every few years. It developed gradually in the absence of land-based natural enemies, so instead of flying above the trees it walks like a duck across the dry forest floor. When it moves unsteadily across something that might kill it, it will stand still.

Such unusual characteristics turned it into fast food for human settlers, and for the cats and rats they brought with them. It seemed to have disappeared by the 1970s, until scientists came across two undiscovered populations in the country s south. These survivors were eventually moved to small enemy -free islands, where researchers have spent decades trying to get them to breed (繁殖).

The scientists' patience is finally rewarded. The rimu was in fruit this year, and more than 80 chicks hatched, making this the best breeding season, on record. Many have. survived into adolescence, increasing the number of adult kakapos by a third, to 200 birds.

Another danger to the kakapo is a lack of genetic diversity. This is one reason why fewer than half of kakapo eggs hatch. By arranging the genome (基因组) of every living bird, scientists can identify closely-related individuals and put them on different islands. Every bird is fitted with something to track its slightest movement. If a female mates with an “unsuitable” male, the process can be stopped.

All these efforts cost almost New Zealand $1 .3 million this breeding season. Yet the kakapo's future still looks unsafe. Earlier this year a severe disease tore through the population. And tiny as the number of kakapos is, space is running out on the two islands where most of them live. New enemy-free settlements must soon be found.

【1】Which of the following is a danger for the survival of the kakapo?

A.It is the smallest bird in the world.

B.It lacks exercise and usually stands still.

C.It adapts slowly, in genetic development.

D.It can't respond actively when facing danger.

【2】In what way was the scientists' patience rewarded?

A.Adequate food supply for kakapos was guaranteed.

B.New settlements for kakapos were eventually found.

    C.Kakapos were becoming increasingly aggressive.

D.Kakapos' birth rate reached the highest level.

【3】Why did the scientists put kakapos in different islands?

    A.To stop closely-related kakapos mating.

B.To help kakapo families live together.

C.To maintain the production of rimu fruit.

D.To protect kakapos from natural enemies.

【4】What does the author think of the efforts to protect the kakapo in New Zealand?

    A.They are successful.

    B.They are inadequate.

    C.They are doubtful.

    D.They are unsafe.

  • 29、   Most adults firmly believe that as kids reach their teens, they start to take crazy risks that get them in trouble. Do teenagers simply love taking all risks much more than adults? A recent study suggests otherwise.

Scientists designed a simple experiment involving 33 teenagers and three other age groups. In the experiment, the researchers tried to distinguish between two very different kinds of risk-taking. The first they called a willingness to take known risks (when the probability of winning is clear) and the second they called a willingness to take unknown risks (when the possibility of success is uncertain).

The study offered participants the opportunity to play two kinds of games. They had the chance to win money, with one game offering a known risk and the other offering an unknown risk. On each round of the game, each participant had to choose between taking a sure $5 and known or unknown risks of winning a lot more. If on one particular round they had picked the $5 for sure choice, then they got $5. But if on that round they had chosen to take a risk, the rules of the game will determine whether or not they had won. If they did win, they went home with between $8 and $125. And, of course, if they lost, they went home with nothing.

What the scientists found was really quite surprising. It turned out that the average teenager was very hesitant when risks were known—more careful than college students or parents-aged adults, and about as careful as grandparent-aged adults. This means that when the risks were known, teenagers were not risky in their behavior at all. Only when the risks were unclear did teenagers choose them more often than other groups. Under those kinds of conditions, they were much more willing to take a risk than any other group.

So, what does all of this mean? The research suggests that adults should probably focus more energy on trying to educate teenagers about risks than limiting them. Teenagers who understand the risks associated with a decision are more likely to be careful in their behavior.

1This experiment was carried out by

A.dividing the teens into three groups

B.comparing the reactions to different risks

C.giving equal amount of awards to the participants

D.observing the emotional changes of the teenager

2When facing known risks, teenagers tended to be ________.

    A.ambitious B.cautious C.anxious D.curious

3Which group in the study were more likely to take unknown risks?

    A.Teenagers. B.College students. C.Parent-aged adults. D.Grandparent-aged adults.

4According to the study, parents should focus on ________.

A.guaranteeing children to be careful B.setting age limits on dangerous activities

C.respecting teens to make their own choices D.guiding teens to learn more about the effect of risks
