  • 25、   As the taxi starts to drive away, my father stands at the living room window looking out, watching me move off into the darkness, at 4:30 a. m. His grey hair is messy from sleeping. Moments ago, he got up to carry my bag for me and went into the cold open air.

He thanked me for a daughter's cooking and for having traveled so far to spend the holiday with him. I told him that I worried about he would feel lonely again in the empty house.

"I have my plans," he said, in the moments before I walked out the door.

When I arrived 10 days ago, I felt it was quiet and lifeless in the house. Then my brothers and I came and filled the rooms. But, now, they're gone, I am the last to leave.

As the taxi began to move, I watched the lights go off, but my father didn't leave. Even though he couldn't see me in the dark, he stood by the window watching, beside the tree. It was a fresh tree. He buys one every year for the new year.

The life is hard for my father: my mother died years ago, and now his children are far from home, our selfish choices taking us from one end of the country to the other. I watched him as he stands still like the tree. Are there tears in his eyes, as there are in mine?

I can’t wave from the taxi, as I leave a parent to loneliness in the early morning darkness. I leave behind two trees: one with silver-grey hair, the other still freshly green. Both of them are tall and straight.

This is only a scene from the first episode(集) of CCTV’s new documentary, A Bite of China 2(舌尖上的中国2), which appeared on April 18, 2014. But they are enough reasons for viewers to spend an hour every Friday until June 6 enjoying in front of their television sets. Viewers(观众) have had to wait a long time since A Bite of China 1 came out in 2012.

Back then, the seven-episode documentary was considered the best one ever produced by CCTV, with its good effects and rich food culture. A famous foreigner praised it, saying “it’s the best TV show I’ve ever seen about food. I’m sure it’s the best one ever made.

The new season includes eight episodes, covering 300 types of food. According to CCTV, every minute of the show was edited(编辑) out of 150 minutes of footage(影像镜头). Finding their subjects was often the hardest part of the film team’s job. It took them six months to film a beekeeping couple(一对养蜂), which included a journey of more than 2,000 kilometers.

Food is a personal thing, in that no dish suits all tastes. However, the program has still managed to move all sorts of viewers. “Compared with A Bite of China 1, the new season has a more human touch, which makes viewers cover some tears while their mouths are watering,” said Sina(新浪) Entertainment.

As always, the people are the most interesting part. A Bite of China 2 shows a greater dream—through homemade food, it tells the joys and sorrows of common Chinese in changing times, according to director Chen Xiaoqing of the documentary series(系列).

“I was moved by the people in each simple story,” said Li Weifang, 17, of Beijing No 3 High School. “Their work helps enrich(丰富) China’s food culture.

In fact, that is exactly what the new season hopes to deliver(传送). Through the program, “the listeners will see the characteristics of the Chinese people: save and tenacity(坚韧),” Chen told Xinhua Internet.
