25、I can’t remember if I was 9 or 10 years old, but I do remember that it was the last day of 4-H camp. I was looking in the mirror and checking my face for bruises (瘀伤). The day before, for some silly reason, I had got into a fight with another boy. It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to pull us apart and call it a draw, but in truth, I had lost. My head still hurt from a couple of the blows the other boy had landed. We hadn’t talked since the fight either but only stared coldly at each other from across the room.
Still, I was in a good mood this morning because I knew my Mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother, me and our friends. Soon I saw her walking up the sidewalk toward the steps of our cabin (小屋). She had been bringing these pizzas to us every 4-H camp for years now. I saw her smile as my brother and his friends all took the big cut pieces. She made sure, though, to save the last two pieces for me. I thanked her with a smile and started to eat when I saw my fight opponent(对手)standing off to the side by himself. At that moment, something moved me. I walked over to him and gave him one of the pieces. We talked, laughed and ate. And for some reason unknown to me at the time, the pizza tasted better than ever before.
I can see now what moved my heart. A little miracle (奇迹) was working inside of me—moving me to forgive, to give and to love. And I am so happy that I followed my heart.
Scottish writer Henry Drummond wrote: “You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love.”
May you really live then. ________________. And may your pizza always taste delicious.
【1】In the 4-H camp, what happened to the writer?
A.He got hurt in a fighting.
B.He developed survival skills.

A.He didn’t like to eat pizza.
B.The opponent asked him for it.
C.He wanted to show his care for him.
D.The opponent said sorry to him for the fight.
【3】Which of the following can be put in the blank in the last paragraph?
A.May you live long.
B.May you forgive, give and love.
C.May your friendship last long.

26、 “How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way for Americans to greet each other. But “ How are you?”is also a very unusual question. It often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks” How are you?” hopes to hear the answer“Fine”even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. In fact, they are not really a question or an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello”or“Hi”.
Sometimes people also don’t say exactly what they mean, For example, when someone asks “ Do you agree?”the other person might think,“No,I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say,“ I’m afraid …”It’s a nicer way to disagree.
People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many phone talks finish when one person says” I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to finish the phone call gives an excuse,” Someone’s at the door.” The excuse might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to finish the phone call simply doesn’t want to talk anymore, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
When they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, thinking of finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it is part of the game of language.
【1】“How are you?”is another way of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
【2】It is polite to say” No,I disagree. I think you are wrong” if you don’t agree with others.
【3】When someone says” I have to go now” on the phone, it means he wants to go on talking.
【4】“Someone is at the door ”may be an excuse for finishing a phone call.
【5】Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about just because they try to be nice to each other.
27、Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏). Finally, there was only one family between the ticket counter and us. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.
The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be. When the ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted, he proudly answered, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adults tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady told him the price. The man’s wife lowered her head. The father`s lip began to quiver and he leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again quoted(报价) the price. The man didn`t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn`t have enough money to take them to the circus? Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said ,“Excuse me, sir. This fell out of your pocket.”
The man knew what was going on. He wasn`t begging for a handout but certainly appreciated(感激) the help in a heartbreaking and embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad`s eyes, took my dad`s hand in both of his, holding the $20 bill, and with a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family .”
My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn`t go to the circus that night, but we didn`t go without.
