24、Lin Xiao, 21, a student at Guangdong University, has a big family – her two parents, a younger brother and two younger sisters. Lin took her role as the “big sister” seriously. When her first sister was born, Lin took turns with her mom holding the baby late into the night. “I almost did everything that was supposed to be a parent’s job, but I felt proud of myself,” she said.
Not all of Lin’s classmates shared her experiences because of the family planning policy (政策), a law that was carried out in China about forty years ago. But the situation is about to change. A new policy made on October 29 said all couples can now have two children.
The new policy is expected to help raise the population of China. Recently, China has been facing an aging population and labor shortages because of the low birth rate (比率).
The two-child policy may also be the gift for every only child. Researchers found that growing up with a brother or sister can have good influence on one’s mental health.
“Brothers and sisters do matter in unique ways. They give kids something that parents don’t.” Laura Walker, a professor from Beijing University, told China Daily. She noted that having a brother or a sister protects teenagers against loneliness, fear and so on.
Liu Fang, 20, from Shenzhen University, has a 2-year-younger sister. When her sister disagreed with parents over choosing a college major, she helped her to communicate with parents. “If necessary, I would always have her back,” said Liu. “The best part of having a sister is that you have a partner, friend and supporter throughout your life.”
But children with brothers or sisters also have to learn to understand and look after each other, said Laura.

25、 A little boy invited his mother to come to his teacherparent meeting, but the little boy was very upset. Although his mother was a beautiful woman, there was a scar (伤疤) on her right face. The boy never wanted to talk about why or how she got the scar. At the meeting, the people saw the mother with a scar, and the little boy felt embarrassed and hid himself from everyone, listening to a conversation between his mother and the teacher.
The teacher asked carefully, “How did you get the scar on your face?”
The mother answered, “When my son was a baby, he was in a room, and the room caught fire. Everyone was too afraid to come in, so I went in. When I was running to his bed, I saw a piece of wood coming down and I placed myself over him trying to protect him. I was senseless (无知觉的), but luckily, the fireman came in and saved both of us.” She touched the scar on her face. “This scar will be lasting, but to this day, I have never regretted what I did.”
At this point, the little boy came out running toward his mother with tears in his eyes. He held his mother in his arms.

26、In every school there is a ‘top’ crowd that sets the pace(榜样), while the others follow their lead. Let’s say the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear-bright red sweaters. Very soon everybody is wearing a bright red sweater. There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that bright red is not suitable on some people at all. The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at 70 miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are causing danger to people’s lives. They are like sheep being led to the slaughter(屠宰场).
Perhaps you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. In fact, at one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying, ‘The crowd does it.’ Well, let the crowd do it, but don’t do it yourself. Learn to say, ‘No.’ Make your own judgements(判断). 27、Museums, live music and malls—Chinese cities offer everything that a young person might want. But there are many people who don’t have time to enjoy these things. They follow what is called the “996” work schedule—starting work at 9 a.m. and finishing at 9 p.m., six days a week.
The “996” work schedule recently became a heated topic of discussion online after a computer programmer set up a website called “996ICU”. According to the website, the “996” work schedule is unhealthy and could cause people to end up in an intensive care unit (ICU). This work schedule is common at Chinese tech companies like Baidu, Alibaba and Huawei. Most “996” workers do not receive overtime(加班)pay.
Many tech industry workers have complained about this schedule. “I worked ‘996’ for nine months,” Zhang said, who used to work as a programmer. “I couldn’t sleep because of the pressure. So, I gave up the job at last.” However, the bosses of some tech companies think the “996” work schedule is reasonable. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, said it’s a “huge blessing(福气)” for young workers to work “996”.
“If you don’t do ‘996’ when you’re young, when will you?” Ma said. “If you don’t put in more time and energy than others, how will you achieve the success you want?” Many people have questioned Ma’s thinking. In an article in People’s Daily, the writer said, “Valuing hard work does not mean it’s right to force workers to work overtime.”
Cui Zhendong, a lawyer, told China Daily that it is against the law to use a compulsory (强制的) “996” work schedule. China’s Labor Law《劳动法》clearly states that workers should work no more than eight hours a day or no more than 44 hours a week.
