  • 24、Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

I never saw mum angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, she showed in action. But as a young girl, I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. I was "too emotional(情绪化的)". But she lived "on the surface". As years passed and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know that she did forgive me.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to change her.

Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for any sister and brother.

"But the desk," she said again, "is for Elizabeth."

The present of her desk told me that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.

"Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words."

  • 25、Einstein often received invitations to explain his theories at different universities. On these trips, his driver was always the same man called Hans. Hans often said to him. “It is a pleasure to drive a talent like you, Dr Einstein.”

One evening, on their way to a university, Einstein said, “I’m so tired. I wish I could refuse to give my lecture(讲座) tonight, Hans, but I don’t want to let my audience down.”

“I know what to do,” said Hans. “I can give the lecture for you. You can trust me. I’ve listened to your lecture so many times that I’ve learnt it by heart. No one knows you at this university, so they won’t find out.”

So, they changed places. At the university, Hans was guided to the front of the hall. Einstein took a seat, listened to Hans give his lecture without difficulty, and joined in the applause (掌声) at the end.

However, before Hans left, a man shouted, “I’d like to ask you a question.” He then asked a difficult question and Hans had no idea what he was talking about.

Einstein stood up and answered the question perfectly.

They left the university, with Einstein driving. A little later, Hans offered to drive. “No, laughed Einstein. “It’s a pleasure to drive a talent like you, Hans.”

  • 26、   Have you ever heard of e-wasteelectric waste, which can be produced every dayHow do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one

Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.

It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals(有毒化学物质)can get into the earth or air, affecting the environment and people’s health.

Apple, for example, now recycle people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce(减少)e-waste, we can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.

  • 27、There are robots all around us. Some do difficult jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains. Some just do one simple job, like washing clothes. They do these by “feedback” (反馈).

We human beings receive feedback through our eyes, ears and other senses (感官), which tell us what is going on around. Robots are kind of like human beings in two ways: they work and they have feedback. Information about what is happening is “fed back” into the robot to tell it what to do next.

There are robots taking care of the temperature of our houses, cookers, and hot water systems. We set the controls to the temperature we want and leave the rest to the robot. Its feedback usually comes from a thermostat (温控器). One kind of thermostat is a metal strip (金属条板), which bends (弯曲) when it gets hot. At the right temperature, it bends just enough to turn off the heat. As the air around it cools, the strip becomes straight, which turns the heat on again.

Some robots are created to work in factories. They are taught to do different jobs. First, their “brains” are shown how the job needs to be done. A person moves the “arms” and “hands” of the robot through each part of the job as the robot’s brain records each move. After that, the robot is set to work on its own. If something gets in the way, the robot will stop until a human engineer comes to solve the problem. When it is needed for a new job, its memory is deleted. Then it will be taught how to do the new work.

The most clever robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their fingers can feel shapes and even find out how hot and cold objects are. These robots have computer brains, connected to their eyes and fingers, which control their actions.

There are robots all around, making our lives easier. In some ways, they are better than human beings. They work quickly, hardly making any mistakes. They do the same jobs over and over again, never getting bored or tired.

【1】According to the passage, which of the statements is NOT true?

A.Robots mainly work by receiving feedback.

B.Not only can robots do easy jobs, but they can do hard ones.

C.Some robots can set the temperature right through a thermostat.

D.Robots working in factories are controlled by the metal strip.

【2】In this passage, the writer tells us that ________.

    A.robots should be greatly improved

B.robots are very helpful and useful to humans

C.robots will probably take over in the future

D.we see robots only at certain times

【3】We can infer from paragraph 4 that ________.

A.the robots are not able to think on their own

B.the robots are controlled by engineers all the time

C.when the robots are given a new job, their memory will be cleaned off

D.most robots can do several jobs at a time
