22、Internet time tied to teen depression(抑郁) symptoms
Spending time online is normal behaviour for teenagers. But too much Internet use by teens —or too little, for that matter —might be related to depression, a new study finds.
The findings, reported in the journal of Pediatrics, do not mean that the Internet is to blame. For one, teens in the study who spent no time online were also at increased risk of depression symptoms. Instead, the researchers say that both heavy Internet use, and non-use, could serve as signals that a teenager is having a hard time.
For the study, Dr Pierre-Andre Michaud and his colleagues at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, surveyed 7,200 individuals aged 16 to 20 about their Internet use.
Those who were online more than two hours per day were considered “heavy” Internet users, while those online anywhere from several times per week to two hours per day were considered “regular” users.
The teenagers also answered a number of health-related questions, including some standard questions about "depressive tendencies” that gauge(判定) how often a person feels sad or hopeless. Compared with regular Internet users, the study found, kids who were heavy users or non-users were more likely to be depressed or very depressed.
Among male teens, heavy users and non-users were both around one-third more likely to have a high depression score, compared to “regular” users. Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users.
That was with factors like family income and any chronic health problems taken into account.
Since teenagers typically go online to contact with friends, the researchers speculate(推测) that those who are never online may be more socially isolated.
【1】How long are those who are online per day considered “heavy” Internet users?
A. More than two hours. B. More than eight hours.
C. More than twelve hours. D. More than ten hours.
【2】What’s the purpose of Dr Michaud and his colleagues’ study?
A. To know the actual number of teenagers online.
B. To know the actual time of teenagers online.
C. To know the influence of study online on teenagers.
D. To know the relationship between the Internet use and depression.
【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word “isolated” in the last paragraph?
A. Independent B. United
C. Separated. D. Capable.
【4】According to the accounts of the sixth paragraph, what can we conclude?
A. Non-users of Internet aren’t likely to be depressed.
B. Among girls, heavy Internet users are more likely to suffer depression than regular users.
C. Heavy users will lead to death unless limited.
D. Non-users have more possibility to be depressed than heavy users.
23、Undoubtedly there are a few positive characters who are able to “rise above” their environment, who are able to impress the people with whom they come in contact in spite of their clothes.
Sometimes we read of some learned woman, who has “made good in her profession,” who says that she has not looked in a mirror for years; but such a woman is a rare exception, and one is not safe in gambling with one’s chances of success by following her. It is not the positive characters with whom we are concerned, however, for they are few and somehow manage to take care of themselves. The vast majority of the race are not so blessed, and we need to observe but little to realize that with them the reaction of clothes is an important factor.
School girls should know that clothes may make a career; happiness and leadership in all the years of high school and college life may be affected by the story a Freshman’s clothes tell. Many a girl with a keen mind, who has a natural disregard for clothes, perhaps, or who has not been trained in the appreciation of beauty in clothes, has lost her opportunities for leadership and self-expression which by right her brain power should have given her.
One of the mental capacities which we all exercise and yet exercise most unconsciously is that of passing judgment on the people we meet. In a majority of cases the judgment is superficial and inaccurate; but the estimate is made. Some people may not get their final judgment till they hear one talk and will judge one by the tone of voice and by what is said as the true index; but the vast majority will form an opinion based largely, if not entirely, on appearance. One tells the world daily of one’s ideals, ambitions or good breeding through dress; and it is told so plainly that “he who runs may read” and, perhaps, he who reads may run.
【1】According to the first two paragraphs, few people _______.
A. care about their appearances
B. understand the art of dressing themselves
C. can catch others’ attention by dressing plainly
D. are able to dress properly without professional directions
【2】Who is the text intended for?
A. Book writers B. Women
C. Men D. Fashion designers
【3】The author thinks it is _______ for most of us to judge the people we meet by what they wear.
A. natural B. foolish C. surprising D. necessary
【4】Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Rise Above Your Environment
B. He Who Runs May Read
C. Dress to Impress
D. Art of Dressing
24、Japanese researchers are genetically changing mosquitoes so that they become carriers of a vaccine (疫苗) that could vaccinate millions for free. The researchers have already genetically changed a mosquito species so that its saliva (唾液) contains a protein that acts as a vaccine against leishmaniasis(利什曼病), a deadly disease that leads to terrible skin problems. The team confirmed that mice bitten by the genetically-engineered mosquito developed an antibody to the disease, meaning they had built up immunity (免疫力).
“You would be vaccinated without even noticing. You wouldn’t need any drug and you wouldn’t need to show up at a fixed place for mass vaccinations,” said Shigeto Yoshida, the associate professor who has led the research. “Repeated bites would only strengthen the immunity.”
Similarly the mosquitoes could be used to help treat malaria (疟疾), perhaps a decade from now, said the malaria expert.
Nearly one million people die each year from malaria ---- most of them are children ---- mainly in Africa and Asia, according to the World Health Organization. Now a problem is that no effective vaccine exists. “There is a treatment that works, but it is beyond the reach of people who need to worry about food for tomorrow,” Yoshida said.
However, Yoshida expects that the genetically-engineered mosquito will finally help wipe out the deadly disease in the developing world. “Technically speaking, I believe it’s a matter of 10 years or so, but it’s not clear whether society would accept it,” he said.
Another problem is that the genetically-engineered mosquito may still pick up and spread the infected blood of a person who has already caught malaria. Yoshida’s team is hoping it can solve this problem by developing a mosquito species that kills the malaria virus inside its own body.
【1】How have scientists turned mosquitoes into carriers of a vaccine?
A.By changing their genes.
B.By killing the virus in their bodies.
C.By letting them bite mice.
D.By injecting vaccines into their bodies.
【2】Which of the following is NOT an advantage of using mosquitoes as vaccine carriers?
A.It’s free of charge.
B.It’s convenient.
C.It’s more effective.
D.It’s unnoticeable.
【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.People welcome the idea of using mosquitoes to treat malaria.
B.Mosquitoes carrying vaccines may still spread malaria.
C.It is not long before people will use mosquitoes to get rid of malaria.
D.A mosquito can kill the malaria virus inside its own body.
【4】The main purpose of the passage is to .
A.introduce a possible solution to malaria
B.encourage people to use mosquitoes to fight against diseases
C.show that Japan has very advanced technology
D.call on people to help people suffering from malaria in Africa and Asia
