  • 21、At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey around the world lasted five months and he flew across 52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23 March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.

Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he literally couldn’t land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.

And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The Rutherford siblings (兄弟姐妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational (娱乐的) private pilot.”

Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!

  • 22、Most people make a donation (捐赠)if they want to help those in need. But Eddie Izzard, a 47-year-old British man, did something completely different. He decided to raise money by running 1,100 miles. And he managed to raise more than £200,000!

It would take most people at least two years if they were crazy enough to try and mil such a distance. But Eddie Izzard? It took him just 51 days. In less than two months, he ran 43 marathons!

When asked how he felt, he said that he was planning to “sleep for a week”. He thanked the people who had come to support him and joined him on his journey.

And how long did he have to train for all this? Well, amazingly, only five weeks—he wasn’t even particularly fit when he decided to put himself in for this journey.

And what a journey it was! He lost several of his toenails (脚趾甲)and had blisters (水泡)all over his feet. He had to take ice baths for his legs at the end of each day to help stop his legs inflating (肿胀)lo twice the size of an elephant.

Ever experts are impressed with what he has achieved. Andy Dixon, editor of Runners World, says, “Covering 26 miles in a day at whatever speed for 43 runs, it’s demanding. A 5-hour marathon is a fairly decent pace. It’s a great achievement.”

So how did he do it? Well, he ran slowly at first. Ten hours a day to begin with and, as he got fitter, he got faster. In the end he was finishing in just over five hours. But fitness alone was not enough. What was more important was the fact that Eddie Izzard wanted to make a difference to other peopled lives. What Eddie Izzard did was so special that the documentary of his run has been made into an inspiring film: Believe! “You’ve got to believe you can be something else. That’s why I keep going.” Eddie says in the film.

  • 23、New parents should carry their babies upward and facing outwards to improve the baby's development, a study says.

Pulitzer prize-winning author, Jared Diamond, said western parents could learn a lot from some more traditional societies, such as some tribes(部落) in the Amazon and Africa. That is because they carry their babies around and their child-raising methods are helpful. Unlike a pram(婴儿车), these traditional methods could help parents raise children with good qualities, such as confidence and curiosity.

Jared Diamond is a professor at the University of California in Los Angeles. His study result is based on most of his observations when he visited tribes in New Guinea. He spent 50 years working there. And he lived there with people who were still using stone tools. And other scientists have closely studied other groups including the Pygmies of African rainforests.

"Many different methods have already been tested by natural experiments: different societies have been raising their children differently for a long time."

"However, some traditional child-raising methods can really help a baby's development. To comfort a crying baby quickly, allow them to sleep with their parents. The physical contact can make a baby feel safe."

"The methods that people living in the African rainforest use to raise their children may have become 'fashionable' in the modern world, but I suggest it's time to consider some of them seriously again." Jared Diamond said.

【1】What does Jared Diamond advise new parents to do?

A.Give up prams and carry their babies around.

    B.Bring up their babies themselves.

C.Talk with their babies as much as they can.

D.Push their babies around in prams.

【2】What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

A.The difference of child-raising methods between modem societies and traditional societies.

B.Different customs of some traditional societies in the Amazon and Africa.

C.The advantages and disadvantages of parenting methods of some tribes in the Amazon and Africa.

D.Why western parents should learn parenting methods from traditional societies.

【3】For what purpose did Jared Diamond visit tribes in New Guinea?

    A.To help the people there.

    B.To do his experiments.

    C.To meet some scientists.

D.To go on a business trip.

【4】Jared Diamond's attitude towards the child-raising methods of people living in the African rainforest is ______.

    A.negative

    B.doubtful

    C.objective

    D.positive

  • 24、Your emotion helps you make sense of the world. At the core of an emotion is a subjective experience of the valence of it — what emotion scientists call “affect” (情感). Generally speaking, affect is what we are most focused on. Do you have chocolate cake in front of you? That’s good! Do you see a spider on the table! That’s bad!

Your affective reactions tell you which experiences are desirable, and which aren’t, but the total emotional experience includes all you do and think. You can learn a lot by observing and describing them. You can also learn a lot by appreciating their secret life.

The problem is: the affective features of emotions tend to dominate. Our subjective valence of emotion is almost all we can see. When emotions are only about what is pleasant or unpleasant in subjective experience right now, the more important features of emotion disappear.

If you can slow down and expand; if you stop running or clinging (沉浸其中) and adopt a sense of curiosity, emotions become more subtle and different. When fear comes up, don’t walk away so that fear dissipates. Instead, stay. Allow yourself to feel the nervousness, the sweating, and everything else that comes along with it. It is one of the hardest things to do in life, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. If you run, you are telling basic parts of your brain, “I guess this threat really was real. I better stay away from it.” You are training yourself to fear, regardless of that situation. If you cling, you are saying, “Escape from this emotion is a threat”, and since it is not a happy experience, happiness slips through your hands like sand.

Note that you can not fool yourself. Just allow the full emotion. You will never enter into their secret life until you stop running or clinging. To control your life, you need to actively train your emotions to be your ally (同盟). Observe. Describe. Appreciate. Do that and you may find you have allies for healthy living that were there all along.

【1】Why does the author mention “chocolate cake” and “spider” in paragraph 1?

A.To explain the complex response of emotions.

B.To show the subjective experience of emotions.

C.To indicate the goodness and badness of the world.

D.To emphasize the significance of emotions in life.

【2】What is the consequence if you just focus on your present feelings?

A.The present feelings are less obvious.

B.The subjective emotions are less powerful.

C.The overall picture of emotions is easier to ignore.

D.The observation and description of emotions are easier.

【3】What does the underlined word “dissipates” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to?

    A.Deepens.

    B.Spreads.

    C.Disappears.

    D.Sticks.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.The secret of emotions.

    B.The subjective experience.

C.The importance of allies in life.

    D.Magical functions of emotions.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文

James Selton was one of the rudest boys in the village where he lived: If a person in the street was well dressed, he would cry out, “Dandy(花花公子)!” If a person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him, and annoy him in every way.

One afternoon, just as the school was over, a stranger passed through the village. His dress was plain and somewhat old, but neat and clean. He carried a walking stick in his hand, on the end of which was a parcel, and he wore a round hat.

No sooner had James seen the stranger than he winked to his playmates, and said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, knocked off his hat, and ran away.

The man turned and saw him, but James was out of hearing before the man could speak. The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again James approached; but this time, the man caught him by the arm, and held him tightly. However, he contented himself with looking James a moment in the face, and then pushed him away. As soon as the naughty boy found himself free again, he began to throw dirt and stones at the stranger.

But James was very frightened when the man was struck on the head by a brick and badly hurt. All the boys ran away, and James slipped across the fields to his home.

As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told James that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home, and was now in the house; that he had bought beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left his carriage at the inn, a mile or two off and walked on foot so as to surprise his brother, their father.
