  • 21、Chinese animated film Ne Zha has broken several records in the 2019 summer. Its popularity isn’t limited to the quality of the animation, but also due to the film’s unique take on this mythical(神话的) figure.

This isn’t the first time that Ne Zha has appeared in animated form. In 1979, the Shanghai Animation Film Studio produced Prince Ne Zha’s Triumph against the Dragon King. In 2003 , CCTV produced a 52-episode cartoon titled The Legend of Ne Zha, In both of them, Ne Zha is described as a positive and lovely child with amazing powers who always wants to help others.

When people first saw the poster for the new Ne Zha film, many wondered why the little hero from their childhood looked so frightening with black circles under his eyes and an evil smile.

Jiaozi, the director of the film, explained in an interview that they had more than 100 designs for Ne Zha. Their goal was to make sure that his appearance would serve the theme of the film, that is, fighting against prejudice(偏见) and changing one’s fate(命运).

“Because we wanted to highlight the theme of the film, we couldn’t design Ne Zha as a bright and positive character.” Jiaozi noted. “I also want to help the audience to think in real life. I want to make audiences change their prejudice towards this ugly Ne Zha after they walk out of theaters.”

  • 22、Genetically Modified (GM) food is unfortunately becoming more popular among farmers and food processors. Crops are being genetically modified to resist insects, plant diseases, insecticides(杀虫剂). Plants are also modified to look bigger and better. Unfortunately the end goal isn’t providing nutrition for people, it’s to increase profit margins and to make food look better. In fact many modern fruits and vegetables are twice the size of what they used to be while having far less vitamins, and not tasting good either. Now research is showing that genetically modified food might even be bad for you.

GM organisms are organisms that have genes inserted into their DNA in order to offer certain characteristics. In this way you can make it better, or make it last longer.

Jeffrey M. Smith has published a study about the dangers of GM food. It was discovered that when GM soy was fed to female rats they found that all their young died within 3 weeks compared to a natural 10% death rate. Their young were also born smaller and they later had problems becoming pregnant. A study of pigs found that they also became infertile(不育) after eating GM corn.

Many people are eating GM food without even realizing it. The solution to this problem is simple. Human beings existed in their current form for hundreds of thousands of years. For most of that time we ate a diet consisting of meat, fruit, vegetable, fish, eggs and nuts. This is our optimal diet which leads us to live a healthy and long life. But over the last 30 years North America has experienced diabetes, cancer and heart disease. All due to the misinformation provided by groups who work on behalf of the manufacturers of GM food. The way to avoid obesity, heart disease and cancer is by eating like our stone-age ancestors.

1According to the author, what ultimately inspired the popularity of GM crops?

    A. Rich nutrition.   B. Unique taste.

    C. High profits.   D. Energy saving.

2What had we better do if we want to stay healthy according to the text?

    A. Eat more fruit.   B. Be vegetarians.

    C. Eat more grains.   D. Keep traditional diet.

3The text is organized in the form of ________.

    A. time and events   B. cause and effect

    C. reasoning and argument   D. contrast and comparison

4We can infer that the lobby groups (in Paragraph 4) are people who are ________.

    A. scientists who give out false information because of carelessness

    B. doctors who try to profit from patients who suffer from unhealthy food

    C. workers who try to cheat customers for the benefits of food producers

    D. agricultural technicians who are responsible for promoting new product

  • 23、Have you ever felt like nobody was there? Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere? Have you ever felt like you could disappear? Like you could fall, and no one would hear? Well, you’re not alone.

In a time when it seems like everyone is consumed by social media, the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen really hits home on what it’s like to be a millennial or any person struggling to find their way. With its moving story, catchy songs, and talented cast, the musical is sure to earn not only your praise, but steal your heart in the process.

Coping with severe anxiety, the title character finds it extremely difficult to fit in. His single mother is always working, his only acquaintance at school is a family friend, and the girl he likes doesn’t even know he exists. Every day is a constant struggle, until the unexpected death of a classmate gives him a voice he never knew he had, even if it is all based on a lie.

On top of the moving story, the music is infectious. When the single “Waving Through a Window” was first released, I played the track for five days straight. Even after seeing the show, I still have the urge to bust out the lyrics to “Words Fail” during my morning commute on the subway. You think I’m exaggerating, but just wait until you hear the soundtrack for the first time. You won’t just tap your foot to one of the melodies during the show; you’ll come out humming three more of them when you leave, guaranteed.

With so many different themes like depression, anxiety, and loneliness throughout, we can all see a bit of ourselves in one of these characters: the socially awkward teen, the daughter whose parents won’t stop fighting, or the classmate who feels like there’s no other way than just giving up. In between numbers, I could audibly hear the audience choking back sobs. My mom and I bonded with a young man sitting next to us during the intermission as we talked about how we related to Evan, his mother, his classmates, and all that in between. At the heart of it all, this isn’t just a show. It’s a story that needs to be told, because no one deserves to be forgotten. No one deserves to feel like they could disappear. Even when you’re broken on the ground, you will be found.

【1】The questions in the first paragraph are mentioned _________.

A.to inform us of some common social phenomena.

B.to tell us that many people feel lonely in life.

C.to introduce the theme of Dear Evan Hansen.

D.to illustrate that severe anxiety exists.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “hit home” mean?

    A.To be widely reported.

B.To return to the original place.

C.To make people realize something is true.

    D.To suddenly become very successful.

【3】According to the author, what makes Dear Evan Hansen a huge success?

    A.Brilliant cast.

    B.Infectious songs.

    C.The complex story.

D.The way it relate to every individual.

【4】What is the best title of this passage?

A.Dear Evan Hansen-you are not alone

    B.Dear Evan Hansen-a big hit

C.Broadway musical strikes a chord with me

    D.Broadway musical is still catchy

  • 24、   Mom noticed that something was wrong when I started getting so thirsty. I’d have a lot to drink before bed, which was unusual for me. One time, I opened a big container of apple juice and kept refilling my glass. Before I knew it, I’d drunk the entire container! My mom called my doctor. I then had a few blood tests, and the results were certain — I had diabetes (糖尿病), which meant that the amount of sugar in my blood was very high. That can be dangerous, so I had to learn how to control my blood-sugar level.

My eating habits had to change in a big way. With diabetes, I can’t eat a lot of sugar or carbohydrates (碳水化合物). I have to figure out exactly how much sugar I plan to eat, and then I get an injection of insulin (注射胰岛素) before the meal to help my body process the food. Also, I test my blood-sugar level often. I’m always trying to keep my blood-sugar at a healthy level. The level can drop when I exercise, but that doesn’t keep me out of gym class or off the basketball court — I just keep some juice boxes around to boost my blood-sugar if I need to.

It’s a lot of work and not a lot of fun — to keep track of everything, but I’ve gotten used to my new habits. I was a little scared at first because I wasn’t sure how my life would change. Once I knew what I needed to do, though, it wasn’t a big deal. My life is different now from what it was before, but it has become completely regular to me.

1What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.How the author was found to have diabetes.

B.The author’s life before having diabetes.

C.Who found the author had diabetes.

D.The author’s eating habits before having diabetes.

2What did the author do after knowing she had diabetes?

A.She stopped playing basketball in the gym.

B.She controlled her blood-sugar level strictly.

C.She stopped eating food with natural sugar.

D.She tested her blood-sugar level before every meal.

3What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Absorb. B.Control. C.Increase. D.Test.

4What’s the author’s attitude toward her having diabetes now?

    A.Worried. B.Frightened. C.Pessimistic. D.Positive.
