二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、By examining tiny vessels (血管) inside a person’s eyes, doctors might one day be able to predict that person’s risk of early death, according to a new study.

Past research had shown the retina (视网膜), light-sensitive layers of nerve tissue at the back of the eye, as a possible indicator of a person’s bjological age. The retina offers a unique, accessible “window” to evaluate underlying pathological (病理的) processes of some serious diseases that are associated with increased risks of death. In the new study, the researchers turned to a deep-learning technique that could predict a person’s risk of death by analyzing the biological age of the retina.

Their deep-learning model, a type of machine learning and artificial intelligence that’s modeled to learn similar to a human brain, analyzed more than 80.000 images of fundus (眼底) - the internal back surface of the eye that includes the retina. They obtained the images from nearly 47.000 people between the ages of 40 and 69, stored in the UK. Biobank. TO figure out whether their model was accurate, they first analyzed more than 19,000 fundus images taken from more than 1,100 participants who were in relatively good health. The idea was that the retinal biological ages of these people should be fairly similar to their chronological age (实际年龄) .

The model was fairly accurate in predicting retinal ages, with an accuracy of within 3.5 years to chronological ages. They then used the model to assess the remaining nearly 36,000 participants’ fundus photos collected across a span of 11 years. They found that 51 percent of the participants had a “retinal age gap” - the difference between biological and chronological age - of more than 3 years, 28 percent had a gap of more than 5 years and 4.5 percent had a gap of more than 10 years. In other words, these participants had “older” eyes compared to their chronological age.

Those who had larger age gaps had a 49-67 percent higher risk of death from causes other than cardiovascular disease or cancer. With every one year increase in the age gap, the risk of death increased by 2 percent for any cause and 3 percent for causes other than cardiovascular disease and cancer.

【1】What can we know about the retina?

    A.It causes serious diseases.

B.It indicates the risk of death.

    C.It speeds pathological processes.

    D.It improves people’s physical health.

【2】How do researchers know the retinal age?

    A.By examining the nerve tissue.

    B.By studying the human brain,

    C.By checking the eyesight.

    D.By analyzing fundus images.

【3】What percentage of the participants had the largest retinal age gap?

    A.3.5%.

    B.4.5%.

    C.28%.

    D.51%

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.A new study is conducted on tiny vessels

B.Image technology is used to predict diseases

    C.Eyes may reveal a person’s biological age

D.A deep-leaning on the retina is necessary

  • 22、   The story of a voyage bearing witness to plastic pollution in the oceans,Junk Raft(筏子),based on facts,is an exciting,thought-provoking book.Science educator and researcher Marcus Eriksen's navigational feat(航海壮举)is holding readers' attention and interest--88 days crossing some 4,000 kilometers of open ocean,on a raft made of 15,000 plastic bottles wrapped in fishing nets. But it is more. Two equally fascinating storylines are made up through the written records of a series of events: Eriksen's evolution from soldier to research director of the environmental non-profit 5 Gyres Institute, and the journey we all need to take towards a more sustainable use of plastics.

Around 15%of all the litter in our oceans in plastic, and a calculated 5 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the seas annually.Unavoidably,it is now present at the sea surface and on shorelines,in Arctic seas and on the sea bed at depths of 3,500 metres.Around 700 sea species are known to come into contact with pieces of waste plastic material-and can be harmed or killed by taking in it or becoming twisted and caught in it.There are also concerns about plastics accumulating in commercially important species of fish and shellfish. The waters and shores of Hawaii are particularly heavily pottuted, giving a rationale(理由)for Eriksen's destination.

This environmental challenge has attracted increasing scientific, media and societal attention in recent years.  yet few accounts have conveyed the/wider picture accessibly Junk Raft does just this---while exposing our frustratingly slow progress on a issue of major importance to fisheries, tourism and, finally, the health of the world's oceans.

Eriksen lists the issues associated with the accumulation of sea plastic:the causes, consequences and potential solutions. Our single-use culture is the main offender. For more than 60 years, society and industry have been producing more and more throwaway items particularly packaging. Some solutions lie in better acquisition of materials at the end of their lives,in a circular economy.

Eriksen takes the crisis into consideration together with a timeline of scientific discovery and advancement since the 1970s.Alongside this he gives a very personal, somewhat North American, view the troubles of industry and policy involvement the side plots and blind alleys, and the tactics(战术) of avoidance and disturbance he has so often experienced. There are parallels,he shows, with the troubles that faced those who fought to raise awareness around the health impacts of smoking.

Throughout,we are regularly brought back to the realities of life aboard the raft, with Eriksen's fellow sailor Joel Paschal. This is both fascinating and eventful, from their slow, occasionally very dangerous progress to the moments when it seems the raft will break up into pieces, littering the ocean with the waste material Eriksen is trying so hard to fight against.Eriksen's wider journey also takes him onto dry land, where he touches on the accumulation of land plastic. He learns about the consumption of plastic bags by camels-a serious issue in some desert countries.

It can be difficult to judge the direct impacts of projects such as Eriksen's,but he rightly notes the Importance of raising awareness of the risks of disposable plastic.Eriksen has also done much to emphasize the environmental consequences of polymer microbeads(聚合物微粒)in the US Great Lakes, providing key evidence that led to the introduction of a law.

Junk Raft is filled with adventure, romance,a sense of optimism and important truths that will be needed by the thousands of groups. It serves as a reflection of the choices and journeys that each of us makes and helps us understand how plastic in the oceans is closely connected with the future of human life.

1What makes the book Junk Raft attractive to readers?

A.The appeal for global environmental protection.

  • 23、   As cars have gotten fancier, tiny computers, called microprocessors — commonly known as chips(芯片) — have been added to control many different parts of a car. Modern cars may have as many as 150 microprocessors.

Last year, many car makers had to close their factories because of COVID-19. Since they weren’t making cars, they cancelled many of their orders with chip makers, which forced the companies that made microprocessors to stop making so many chips for cars. They began selling lots of chips to other kinds of companies. For example, during the lockdown, many people bought computers and video game systems to help pass the time while they were stuck at home. This meant that companies which made computers and video game systems needed a lot of chips for their products. So now the demand for new vehicles has returned, but there aren’t nearly enough microprocessors.

One company that studies the car business says that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to produce 500,000 fewer cars. The company expects that number to drop by 300,000 more cars this year. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory in December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. However, the problem has not affected the entire auto industry equally. Toyota says it diversified its supply chain and stored a huge number of components after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. And Hyundai didn’t cancel any of its chip orders in 2020 due to COVID-19, so it is almost not affected. But the hit to the industry has been reported at $61 billion.

Another reason for the shortage is that there just aren’t many companies that make chips. Most of the large chip-making companies are in China.

Most experts think the bottleneck is expected to last for months.

【1】Why does the author mention computers and video game systems in Paragraph 2?

A.To explain why car makers lack chips.

B.To show they can help people kill time.

C.To warn they’ll do harm to car making.

D.To prove how important chips are to cars.

【2】What can be inferred about Toyota?

A.It produced new types of cars.

    B.It cancelled many chip orders.

C.It prepared for supply chain failures.

D.It united Hyundai for chip shortage.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the present chip supply?

    A.Anxious.

    B.Objective.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Conservative.

【4】What is the suitable title for the text?

    A.Automakers Promote Chip Production

    B.Chip Shortage Becomes Common

C.Chip Development Is on the Way

    D.Chip Shortage Hurts Car Makers

  • 24、Don’t Blame Robots for Low Wages

The other day I found myself at a conference discussing declining wages and increasing inequality. One thing that struck me was how many of the participants just assumed that robots are a big part of the problem. But automation just isn’t a big part of the story what happened to American workers over the past 40 years. We do have a big problem, but it has very little to do with technology, and a lot to do with politics and power.

Economically speaking, a robot is anything that uses technology to do work formerly done by human beings. And robots in that sense have been transforming our economy for centuries. David Ricardo, a founding father of economics, wrote about the destructive effects of machinery in 1821. These days, when people talk about the robot destruction, they don’t usually think of things like strip mining(露天采矿) and mountaintop removal(削山开采). Yet these technologies completely transformed coal mining: Coal production almost doubled between 1950 and 2000, yet the number of coal miners fell from 470,000 to fewer than 80,000.

So the destruction brought by technological change is an old story. What’s new is the failure of workers to share in the fruits of that technological change. I’m not saying that coping with change was ever easy. But while there have always been some victims of technological progress, until the 1970s rising productivity translated into rising wages for a great majority of workers. Then the connection was broken. And it wasn’t the robots that did it.

What did? There is a growing agreement among economists that a key factor in wage decreasing has been worker’s declining bargaining power—a decline whose roots are ultimately political. Most obviously, the federal minimum wage has fallen by a third over the past half century, even as worker productivity has risen 150 percent, which rooted in politics, pure and simple.

The decline of unions, which covered a quarter of private-sector workers in 1973 but only 6 percent now, may not be as obviously political. But other countries haven’t seen the same kind of decline. What made America exceptional was a political environment deeply unfriendly to labor organizing and friendly toward union-destroying employers. And the decline of unions has made a huge difference. Consider trucking, which used to be a good job but now pays a third less than it did in the 1970s, with terrible working conditions. What made the difference? Deunionization was a big part of the story.

American workers can and should be getting a much better deal than they are. And to the extent that they aren’t, the fault lies not in our robots, but in our political leader.

1The people present at the conference about lower wages and increasing inequality _________.

A.believed that robots have contributed to wage decline

B.agreed that robots should be used to help increase wages

C.predicted that lower wages and increasing inequality would relate to robots

D.assumed that lower wages and increasing inequality rooted in politics and power

2The author mentions the case of the coal mining to show _________.

A.the robot destruction started from coal mining

B.the influence of the technology on jobs is not a new phenomenon

C.the number of jobs increases as a result of technological advancement

D.strip mining and mountaintop removal completely changed the coal mining industry

3According to the passage, we know that _________.

A.the destructive effects of machinery started in 1821

B.25% of private-sector workers were covered by unions in 1973

C.rising productivity didn’t bring about rising wages until the 1970s

D.the minimum wage has decreased with the dropping of worker productivity

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Technological changes have resulted in lower wages.

B.Political leaders have intended to shift people’s attention from robots.

C.The decline in wages has resulted from bad policies rather than the application of robots.

D.Technological changes have contributed to rising wages instead of causing unemployment.
