22、 You know those nutrition guidelines the government issues every few years? It turns out that following them isn't just good for your health. It's good for the planet, too.
“What we found is that impacts vary across nations, but in the highimpact nations, in general, you can see that, if you follow a nationally recommended diet, despite the fact that these diets don't mention explicitly—or most of them don't explicitly mention—environmental impacts, that you are going to have lower environmental impacts due to that. So that's sort of fairly clear across all the highincome nations.” said Paul Behrens, an environmental scientist at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
The food we eat takes a big toll on the environment. A third of the icefree land on Earth is used for agriculture, and according to some estimates, producing food accounts for roughly a fifth of all humancaused greenhouse gas emissions. Fertilizer runoff also leads to other problems, like the algae blooms in Lake Eerie and the Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico.
However, following dietary guidelines would reduce those impacts, especially in wealthy countries like the US. “Most of the reductions come from meat and dairy,” which have an outsized impact on land use and pollution, and are a major source of greenhouse gases.(That's partly due to cow farts. Seriously.) Following the suggestions would also mean eating fewer calories, since many people here eat more than they need.
Overall, in highincome countries, Behren's team estimates that following the rules could result in as much as a 17 percent reduction in land use, a 21 percent reduction in nutrient pollution, and a 25 percent drop in agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting down on how much food we waste—which is roughly a third in the US—could help even more. The results are in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Of course, people are notoriously bad at following diets. But: “These nationally recommended guidelines do actually have a knockon effect on other areas of policy making. So if I'm developing a new healthyeatingforschools program then that's going to be based off a lot of detail that I get from the nationally recommended guidelines. So while it might not necessarily be the case that people follow directly … they actually are quite influential on the preparation of other advice.”
It seems that a smaller environmental footprint and a healthier lifestyle could go hand in hand.
【1】Which of the following statement will Paul Behrens approve of?
A. Following a nationally recommended diet can have similar impacts in different countries.
B. Following a nationally recommended diet can do good to our health.
C. Not all the countries have recommended diets in an explicit manner.
D. Some highincome nations don't mention the diet explicitly for its impacts can be ignored.
【2】What do the underlined words “takes a big toll on” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. shows signs of B. has a bad effect on
C. takes full advantage of D. makes up for
【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Food production can lead to about 20 percent of humancaused greenhouse gas with only a third of the icefree land used.
B. It is estimated that following dietary guidelines can lead to decrease in more land use than in nutrient pollution.
C. Paul Behrens' new program concerning healthy eating for schools is likely to be based on national nutrition guidelines.
D. Some wealthy countries tend to reduce meat and dairy though the other areas of policy making isn't effected much.
23、People may use the expression “birdbrain” in English to talk about someone who is stupid, but crows prove that this is unfair. Now it has been discovered that crows may understand analogies.
It was once thought that only humans could understand analogies, which help us to solve problems creatively, put things into categories, and make scientific discoveries.
To test this ability in animals, scientists do “relational matching-to-sample”(RMTS) tests, according to the IFL Science website. If a pair was AA, for example, then picking BB to match it would be correct. If the pair was CD, however, then EF would be correct.
Apes and monkeys have learned RMTS, but scientists wanted to know if crows could do it, too. An international team led by Edward Wasserman from the University of Iowa in the US first trained two hooded crows to match things by color, shape, and number in what is called “identity matching-to-sample (IMTS)”, then moved onto RMTS.
For the IMTS test, the birds were put in a cage with a plastic tray that had three cards and two cups in it. The card in the middle was the sample card. The cups on either side were covered with the other two cards: One was the same as the sample (in the color, shape, or number of shapes pictured), while the other wasn’t. The cup with the card that matched the sample card contained two worms to eat.
In the second part of the experiment, the birds were tested with relational matching pairs. A card with two same-sized circles, for example, meant they should pick the test card with two same-sized squares and not two different-sized circles. The birds did well in the more difficult test and picked the correct card more than three quarters of the time, Science News reports.
Wasserman was surprised that crows were able to solve the problem without any training in RMTS. “What the crows have done is extraordinary,” he said in a news release. “Honestly, if it was only by force that the crows showed this learning, then it would have been an impressive result. But this was spontaneous.”
So perhaps it’s time to stop saying “birdbrain” permanently!
【1】Why does the author mention the expression “birdbrain” in the opening paragraph?
A.To get the reader interested in the origins of the expression.
B.To urge people to stop saying that birds are stupid.

B.The birds were first made to do RMTS, then IMTS.
C.The birds picked almost all the correct cards in RMTS.
D.In the IMTS test, the birds needed to identify the sample card to get rewards.
【3】In the RMTS test, if the birds were given the sample card with two same-sized triangles, they had to pick the test card with ________.
A.two same-sized circles
B.one circle and one triangle

24、 Sonoma County is adding artificial intelligence to its wildfire fighting. The county has entered into an agreement with the South Korean firm Alchera to equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software that detects wildfire activity and then issues a warning to authorities.
The technology examines past and current images of terrain (地形;地势) and searches for certain changes, such as flames burning in darkness, said Chris Godley, the county’s director of emergency management. But emergency workers will first have to“teach”the system to distinguish between images that show fire smoke, and others that might show clouds, fog etc. The software will use feedback from humans to improve its algorithm(算法) and will eventually be able to detect fires on its own — or at least that’s what county officials hope.
“It’s kind of like learning how to read,” Godley said. “What letters can I put together to make up a word?” The county activated the technology Wednesday and received 16 positive reports of smoke — all of which turned out to be permitted burns, he said. Once a seasonal ban on controlled burns goes into effect in April or May, the county plans to speed up the testing and feedback phase. The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence. Godley said. “It’s going to take us a while to make sure we get the bugs out and that we really can depend on it because ultimately this is a lifesaving mission.”
The technology is intended to help officials investigate potential fire starts earlier so they can get personnel out to them more quickly and issue necessary warnings. Officials expect other places will adopt it if the technology is successful, particularly because it plugs into the camera network that’s already in place statewide.
“We ultimately believe its potential could be realized in a year or two,” Godley said. “And it could really have a dramatic impact here in California.”
【1】What does the system first have to do before being put into work?

【3】What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean?
A.kill all the bugs.
