二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Hong Kong was once home to booming shellfish reefs, but due to over-development and coastal pollution, shellfish populations have declined sharply. Restoring oyster reefs can solve some of the environmental problems typical of coastal development, such as damage from storm surge and loss of biodiversity.

“Globally, we have lost 85% of shellfish reefs, making it the most endangered marine habitat on earth,” said Marine Thomas, Conservation Project Manager, for TNC in Hong Kong. “Most people associate oysters with food, but less well-known is that oysters create reef habitats that support coastal marine life. Only by restoring these lost habitats can we start to bring back some of the associated environmental benefits.”

A primary benefit that healthy oyster reefs contribute to coastal environments is their role as natural water purifiers. This new study found that, just 7 m2 of Hong Kong oyster reef can filter up to one Olympic swimming pool of water each day; a single Hong Kong oyster can filter up to 30 liters of water per hour at summer temperatures, among the highest filtration rates recorded of any oyster species.

Even more importantly, oyster reefs provide habitat and nursery grounds for many native species that are otherwise lost from our shores. Another research found over 80 species on intertidal muddy shores in Deep Bay, 95% of which were found in oyster reefs.

“While we are excited by the biological possibility of restoration, unfortunately the human aspect remains our biggest challenge to bring these habitats hack at scale. Shellfish habitats are still severely under protected in Hong Kong. We are working with Government on gaining more protection and recognition for these important ecosystems and hope to include them in the next Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan(BSAP),” said Ms. Thomas.

【1】What is the problem with Hong Kong introduced in Paragraph 1?

    A.Coastal areas were seriously polluted.

B.Less food can be produced from the sea.

C.A large number of shellfish have died.

D.Shellfish have disappeared in coastal areas.

【2】What is the main function of the oyster reefs?

    A.Purifying sea water.

    B.Feeding shellfish in them.

    C.Lowering water's temperature.

    D.Filtering swimming pool.

【3】What is Thomas's attitude towards the restoration of oyster reefs?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Negative.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Cautious.

【4】In which part of a website can the text probably be found?

    A.Society.

    B.Environment.

    C.Technology.

    D.Education.

  • 22、Some of the best research on daily experience is rooted in rates of positive and negative interactions, which has proved that being blindly positive or negative can cause others to be frustrated or annoyed or to simply tune out.

Over the last two decades, scientists have made remarkable predictions simply by watching people interact with one another and then scoring the conversations based on the rate of positive and negative interactions. Researchers have used the findings to predict everything from the likelihood that a couple will divorce to the chances of a work team with high customer satisfaction and productivity levels.

More recent research helps explain why these brief exchanges matter so much. When you experience negative emotions as a result of criticism or rejection, for example, your body produces higher levels of the stress hormone, which shuts down much of your thinking and activates (激活) conflict and defense mechanisms (机制). You assume that situations are worse than they actually are.

When you experience a positive interaction, it activates a very different response. Positive exchanges increase your body’s production of oxytocin, a feel-good that increases your ability to communicate with, cooperate with and trust others. But the effects of a positive occurrence are less dramatic and lasting than they are for a negative one.

We need at least three to five positive interactions to outweigh every one negative exchange. Bad moments simply outweigh good ones. Whether you’re having a conversation, keep this simple short cut in mind: At least 80 percent of your conversations should be focused on what’s going right.

Workplaces, for example, often see this. During performance reviews, managers routinely spend 80 percent of their time on weaknesses and “areas for improvement”. They spend roughly 20 percent of the time on strengths and positive aspects. Any time you have discussions with a person or group, spend the vast majority of the time talking about what is working, and use the remaining time to address weaknesses.

1The underlined phrase “tune out” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.

    A. stop listening   B. change one’s mind

    C. sing aloud   D. be crazy

2What will happen if you experience negative emotions?

    A. The situations are sure to become worse.

    B. Much of your thinking will be prevented.

    C. You will feel an urge to improve and become better.

    D. You’ll be motivated to resolve conflicts with people.

3From Paragraph 4, we can learn that ________.

    A. we need a positive feeling to beat one negative feeling

    B. positive interactions have greater effects than negative ones

    C. our conversation should center on what needs improvement

    D. the effect of negative feelings lasts longer than that of positive ones

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Harmful Negatives

    B. More Positive Interactions

    C. How to Be a Productive Manager

    D. Less Time on Strengths and Positive Aspects

  • 24、Western monarch butterflies (WMBs, 西部帝王蝶) fly thousands of miles every year, flying north in spring and summer, and south in fall. Now, scientists want people in the western US to give them a hand by sending in any pictures of monarchs they take this spring.

WMBs, like most butterflies, help plants create seeds, which can then create more plants by spreading a dust called pollen between plants. In turn, monarchs depend on plants. They gather sweet nectar (花蜜) from flowers for food. They rest and spend their winters in trees. And they depend completely on a plant called milkweed to lay their eggs.

Their number has been dropping sharply since the 1980s, when 3 million to 10 million butterflies migrated (迁徙) annually from the northwestern United States to spend the winter at hundreds of sites along the California coast. In 2020, less than 2. 000 monarchs were counted in the entire state. But in 2021, that number jumped to 247, 237. Scientists still don't fully understand this phenomenon. But they’re studying it, saying itll take years of tracking them to work it out.

Scientists have learned a lot about where Western monarchs spend the winters. But they know much less about where they go when they leave their winter homes. That’s why scientists from several universities are organizing a project called “Western Monarch Mystery Challenge” to seek for practical assistance from “citizen scientists” in the American west.

They’re asking anyone who sees a monarch butterfly outside of their winter homes this spring to take a picture and send it to them. By collecting the pictures, along with the date and place where the pictures were taken, scientists hope to learn more about what happens to the butterflies and where they are after they leave their winter homes and protect them better in the future.

Last year’s increase in monarch number is great news. But the number of monarchs is still way below the millions of butterflies that migrated in the 1980s.

【1】What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning WMBs?

A.The links between them and plants.

    B.Their vital importance to plants.

C.The effects of plants on them.

    D.Their contributions to nature.

【2】What best describes scientists when they knew about WMBs’ population jump?

    A.Worried.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Puzzled.

    D.Tolerant.

【3】What do scientists intend to know about WMBs by the project?

A.What their real shapes look like.

    B.Why their number increases.

    C.How they leave winter homes.

    D.Where they live in spring.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.WMBs Are Being Protected

B.Help Is Needed to Help WMBs

    C.WMBs Are Still in Danger

    D.Humans Welcomes WMBs Back

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a warm summer morning. I had just finished reading the grocery specials in the paper. I didn’t really need anything for the next few days. Nothing stuck out as a particularly good deal except the bonus chicken packs.

Five minutes later I headed to the store on my bike: helmet on my head, old pack on my back, and five bucks in my pocket. The temperature seemed to have gone up a little. I locked up my bike and went in. I headed straight back to the meat counter. I grabbed a package weighing slightly over ten pounds, and then headed for the checkout.

“Paper or plastic,” the clerk asked. She gave me a whole lot of change for so much meat and slipped the family pack into a sack, with most of it sticking out the top.

I headed outside, pleased with my purchase and with visions of fried chicken and chicken and rice in my head. Reality set in when the air hit my face. Not warm air, but really hot air. I realized I didn’t have the car, so the chicken would be riding on my back.

Actually, the partially frozen chicken felt cold against my back. In my head I began to count the number of stop signs left before I got home. The signal light turned yellow so I stopped.

For a moment at the signal, it was quiet. Then I heard a woman start screaming. The light turned green but the cars didn’t move. Maybe there had been an accident? I looked behind me even though I never heard any cars’ crunch.

What I saw was a small herd of people coming up the road towards me. There was a man in a suit, a woman with a beach towel, and a few others. I heard someone yell, ‘I’m a nurse. " I looked around again and still, no visible accident. Moving faster, this herd of folks started talking loudly in my direction.

“Were you in an accident” Are you alright?” Who are they talking to, I wondered?

I had no idea what was wrong. I was puzzled!

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

“Look, you are bleeding! Why don’t you get off your bike and take off your backpack?”
