21、 “A lie can travel half way around the world before the truth can put its boots on,” said Mark Twain.【1】
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors, half-truths and complete lies. 【2】In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to distinguish fact from opinion. Another study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell real news from fake news. In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
【3】 They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be skeptical of online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more credible source of information.【4】And then editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be credible? Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice? 【5】 By doing so, you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.
A.Secondly, you can ignore traditional media.
B.This has led to young people becoming confused.
C.Reporters are professionally trained to look for facts.
D.Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice.
E.This may be because fake news can easily catch their attention.
F.In today’s Internet world of “fake news”, lies spread even faster than the truth.
G.Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to confirm the information.
22、All sounds that are louder than 85 decibels are a threat to your hearing, especially if your exposure is long or repeated. That’s because loud sounds can injure or destroy hair cells in your inner ear that are involved in sending sound signals to your brain.
Since most of us don’t carry decibel meters around, you can rely instead on this rule of thumb: if you are required to raise your voice to be heard by someone standing at arm’s length away then there’s potential for harm.
Deafeningly loud noise is not to blame for all hearing loss, though. Occasionally, the root of the problem is an underlying condition such as a ruptured (破裂的) eardrum. In addition, the inner ear can also simply become worse as you get older, and unfortunately, there’s no real way to prevent this.
If you suspect you’ve lost some hearing, see a GP or audiologist. A hearing aid could improve your abilities noticeably, particularly when it’s a question of picking up people’s speech. The technology itself “can take a while to get used to because your brain needs to readjust, “says audiologist Dr Gemma Twitchen. “Research shows this is much easier if you take action on getting your hearing assessed early on, when you first notice it reducing”
Another possible consequence of noise exposure or ageing is tinnitus. This phantom (幽灵似的) ringing, buzzing, hissing or roaring is often caused by the brain compensating for missing sound input or by damaged ear hair cells sending random signals to it. Although the condition affects each sufferer differently, sleep loss, stress and trouble concentrating are among the potential consequences. If your tinnitus comes with hearing loss—and they do often show up together—then a hearing aid could ease it by giving your brain external sounds to focus on. Other potentially helpful devices include sound generators that send out gentle white noise that prevents the tinnitus from developing.
【1】In most cases, how do we know that noise is harmful?
A.By carrying a decibel meter on us.
B.By keeping others at arm’s length.
C.By having to talk loudly at short range.
D.By sensing concentration trouble.
【2】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

【4】What do we know about tinnitus?
A.It impacts the quality of life.
B.It is a direct result of hearing loss.
C.It can be cured by a hearing aid
D.It leads to missing sound input.
23、How can we keep up with the pace of change today? For Bradley Staats, the answer is easy: we all need to keep learning.
“I came to appreciate that it was the story of learning. That’s what dragged me back to learn. I’d been in investment banking, I thought I had the knowledge to do what needed to be done, but really struggled over time,” he recalls. “Why do we get in our own way?”
Now Professor at the University of North Carolina, Staats has published his conclusions in a new book, “Never Stop Learning”. In it, he thinks highly of the virtues of being a “dynamic(积极的) learner”.
Become a Learning Dynamo
“Think of them as the four Fs,” he says. “That you’re focused, you’re fast, you’re frequent and you’re flexible.” Collectively, these four elements make it easier for us to learn new skills and ways of working.
The Importance of Failure
Staats presents some basic elements to achieving this ideal. The first of these involves another F: failure. “If you talk to people about how important failure is to learning, you’ll get the head nodding. But we tend to have a fear of failure, so bad overpowers good.”
Learning to Ask Questions
“When we ask a question, it shows that we don’t know something, and that people will actually think less of us. What’s interesting is that the research suggests it’s just the opposite. It lets them be an expert and share their perspective with us,” he points out.
Learning a Falsification Mindset
Staats advises us “to have strong opinions, weakly held”, which helps to have what he calls “a falsification mindset”. “A good scientist usually has a hypothesis(假设) first and then tries to falsify it,” he says. For example, you want to set up your operation in India. So you not only want to think about why that’s a good idea, but spend a lot of time asking questions why that might be a bad idea. Why might I be wrong?
【1】How was Bradley Staats in investment banking?
A.Quite relaxed.
B.Rather hard.
C.Fairly, pleased.
D.Rarely hopeful.
【2】What effect would “the four Fs” have on us?
A.Disturbing.
B.Challenging.
C.Inspiring.
D.Critical.
【3】In which aspect do we benefit from learning to ask questions?
A.Building our confidence.
B.Showing our wisdom.
C.Gaining our experience.
D.Promoting our understanding.
【4】What makes “a falsification mindset” received by scientists?
A.That they can benefit from the reflective practice.
B.That a failure rate is easy to measure.
C.That they can eventually conclude a truth.
D.That active mindsets surely mean great success.
24、Black History Month is also known as the African-American History Month. It is celebrated all over the United States of America and Canada in the month of February, while in the United Kingdom it is celebrated in October. Each and every school and university conducts various activities to make the generation aware of the importance that African-American history holds in the nation. Black History Month was first started by a famous African-American historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson in the year 1926. In 2013, Black History Month celebrates the 50thanniversary of the March on Washington at which Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous speech “I have a dream”. It also marks the 150thanniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation (解放黑奴宣言).
