  • 21、China’s top animator Tian Xiaopeng and his animation studio announced that they will be producing the much-anticipated live action film, The Three-Body Problem, based on the award-winning sci-fi novel by Chinese writer Liu Cixin.

Tian created China’s 3-D animation milestone Monkey King: Hero Is Back in 2015. It grossed (获利) 956 million yuan in China, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese animation in the country’s film history at that time. It had held the record until 2019 when it got broken by Coloroom Pictures Ne Zha that grossed more than five billion yuan.

Book fans of The Three-Body Problem had mixed reactions after hearing about Tian’s involvement. Some expressed doubt about a studio that specializes in animation making a live-action movie. Others also argued that the universe described in the novel is too big and complicated for any filmmakers to portray on big screens. But some seemed optimistic about the new adaption, noting the impressive track record of Tian’s previous works.

The book series talks about how human beings respond to alien invasion. It was published in China between 2006 and 2010, and sold more than one million copies. The first book in the series was awarded the Chinese Science Fiction Galaxy Award in 2006. In 2014, an English translation of the first book by Chinese-American author Ken Liu, titled The Three-Body Problem, was published. A year later, Liu Cixin became the first Asian author to win the Hugo Award, the highest honor in science fiction and fantasy writing.

The book series has developed various art and entertainment forms, including stage dramas and radio shows. During Spring Festival in 2019, Guo Fan’s The Wandering Earth, a film also based on a novel by Liu Cixin, had made over 4.6 billion yuan at the box office domestically. • 22、For people who struggle to read text, technology can be a lifeline. Actually, assistive technology (AT) tools for reading can also be useful to students who just need some extra assistance to aid reading fluency or comprehension. These tools are inexpensive and easy to find. They open up the wonderful world of reading, making text accessible to students of all abilities. But with so many tools out there, it’s not always easy to know which ones to use.

To help, here’s a guide to some best ones.

    Graphic organizers

They are visual representations, like diagrams and mind maps, of ideas and concepts. You can use graphic organizers to help with comprehension while reading. Graphic organizers can be digital or pen and paper.

    Annotation aids

They let you take notes and write comments while reading. This can make it easier to keep information. Annotation aids can be part of software or apps, or they can be traditional pens, markers, and sticky notes.

    Display control

It allows you to control how text is displayed. When reading on a screen, you can change the font(字体), font size, and spacing of text. You can also cover parts of the screen to lessen distractions(干扰) while reading.

    Text-to-speech (TTS)

It lets you see text and hear it read aloud at the same time. To use this tool, you click on words, and you’ll hear the words read by computer-generated voices. You can even read after it and record your own voice. TTS can also be used to change any digital text files into audio files.

    Optical character recognition (OCR)

It can read aloud text from images and pictures. You can use OCR by taking photos of worksheets, paper documents, and even objects like street signs. Like TTS, OCR uses computer-generated voices.

Keep in mind that using AT reading tools won’t prevent people from learning to read. For example, experts say audiobooks can actually help kids become better readers.

【1】If a reader prefers taking his feelings down while reading, he’d better use ________.

    A.graphic organizers

    B.annotation aids

    C.display control

    D.text-to-speech

    B.Editing photos of documents.

    C.Reading words in pictures.

    D.Using computer-generated voices.

【3】According to the author, AT reading tools are ________.

    A.accessible and beneficial

    B.expensive but worthwhile

    C.helpful and energy-efficient

    D.innovative but complicated

  • 23、When whales die and sink to the ocean floor, their bodies -known as whale falls -provide rich nutrients for other creatures of the deep.

Chinese scientists found a whale fall in the South China Sea during a recent scientific research voyage. It was the first time that Chinese researchers had run across this rare type of ecosystem. It was an important finding, showing China's progress in deep-sea exploration technology, Xie said, a professor at Sun Yat-sen University.

During the 22-day deep-sea exploration from March 10 to April 2. 60 scientists conducted 22 dives and successfully completed a number of scientific tasks. The research aimed to gather information about the key processes of typical seamount ecosystems in the Western Pacific: Ocean. The whale fall was found in a seamount 1,600 meters deep in the central South China Sea. Though the whale fall was only about 3 meters long, it was of great importance in understanding the sea ecosystems, Xie said.

There were dozens of white armored shrimp, red shrimp and several eels found near the whale fall. The eels were eating the tail muscles of the whale fall. This shows that the whale died not long ago and that the whale fall was still in the first stage of decomposition and thus had rare value for long-term observation, Xie said.

Like cold springs, whale falls are homes for creatures of the deep. In the northern Pacific Ocean, they have supported the survival of at least 12,490 kinds of organisms—classed in 43 species—and promote prosperity far beneath the surface, according to data from the university.

【1】What do we know about the whale fall in the South China Sea?

A.It is found on March 10.

B.It is a rare sea ecosystem.

C.It is a kind of cold springs.

D.It is found 3 meters deep in the sea.

【2】How is the Paragraph 3 organized?

    A.By giving data.

    B.By giving examples.

    C.By giving definitions.

    D.By making a contrast

【3】What does the underlined word "prosperity" in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Change

    B.Disappearance.

    C.Richness.

    D.Tourism.

【4】What does the text mainly tell about?

A.A deep-sea exploration led by China.

B.A whale fall found in the South China Sea.

C.China's progress in deep-sea exploration technology.

D.The protection of deep-sea biodiversity resources in China.

  • 24、Siri is an artificial intelligence (AI) that you can carry around in the pocket, where it waits patiently to be told what to do. In the week we spent together, my AI assistant has performed admirably in finding me restaurants, or the location of the nearest coffee shop.

A typical command might be: “Reserve a table for two at a good French restaurant in San Francisco.” Siri responds by presenting a list of top-rated restaurants that can be booked on OpenTable.com. If you say which time you want, it can book you a table without your lifting a finger. In some ways Siri is just a fancy front-end (前端程序) to the 35 sites it can connect to, from taxi booking sites to movie review databases. But what’s new is the way it can analyze the intentions of its master or mistress and use those sites to put them into action.

Siri attaches probabilities to the explanation of each word and cross-references (对照检索) with your location and other data, some of which you must provide yourself. To send email reminders, Siri obviously needs to know your email address. To “find me the flower shop closest to work”, it needs to know where you work. To pay bills or buy airline tickets, it would need access to your credit card.

That raises the question of how far we are willing to trust a piece of software that can go and do things for us based on what it “thinks” we mean, a topic that occupies some engineers working on artificial intelligence. The more data, and power, you give your virtual assistant, the more damage it could do. Siri may be simple, and always shows its explanation of a command before carrying it out. But it gives users a preview of a new balance between privacy, trust and convenience that the expansion of AI into everyday life is likely to develop.

    【1】What is Siri?

    A. A digital e-book reader.

    B. A music-sharing software.

    C. A voice-controlled website.

    D. An artificial intelligence software.

【2】When asked “do I need my umbrella today?”, what will Siri probably respond with?

    A. The list of umbrella makers.

    B. The list of umbrella shops.

    C. The local weather forecast.

    D. The local climate conditions.

【3】Siri is new in that it has the ability ______.

    A. to understand what you speak

    B. to connect a lot of websites

    C. to give a variety of commands

    D. to create computerized database

【4What question does Paragraph 4 answer?

    A. Does Siri think itself?   B. Can I trust you, Siri?

    C. Is Siri simple for use?   D. Will Siri be popular?
