二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、

I go to a gym in west London, always unwillingly. Exercise is too exhausting and boring. Always was. At school I made believe that I had headaches and parental notes too, to get out of PE classes and compulsory games. Now, twice a week, I dutifully get on cycling machines and other equipment and make myself work out for an hour. To get through the difficult hour, I people-watched: young and old, fit and unfit and Clayton Rose, one of the instructors.

Clayton is a personal trainer not only to body perfectionists, but to people who are mentally and physically disabled, the obese and hopeless. He treats them all the same. I have witnessed him listening keenly to a middle-aged working-class woman who goes on and on about her life, holidays, everything. Slim and attractive now, she was once so heavy that she was in a wheelchair. I have seen him calm down a young man with Tourette's syndrome(抽动症)and get him on a treadmill. I have also watched him pushing and coaching strong, cool men.

Clayton was shocked when I said I wanted to write about him. "Why? You know I'm not educated? I'm not clued up about politics and all that. Just an ordinary guy.”

He grew up in Twickenham, where his dad worked in a timber yard, his mum in an office. After college, the young man got into personal training and found his work. One of his best friends got seriously ill and was given months to live. Clayton put him on a program that kept him alive for almost five years: "I don't earn much, but I love my work; training and talking really helps people who don't have confidence, who are lonely, afraid, sick. Lots of people can't step into a gym. They need someone they can trust, someone who will be on their side.

The gym recently updated its equipment. The flashy new stuff confuses and upsets disabled customers. Me too. The private firm running these centers made decisions without considering these needs. Clayton is managing the chaos with grace and strength. Last week, when a young woman in a wheelchair started sobbing loudly, he calmed her down, restored her dignity, superhumanly contained his anger.

One of his colleagues thinks Clayton's "a legend". He is, and doesn't know ita rare thing in this age of extreme narcissism(自恋)and monetized everything.

1Why was I unwilling to go to a gym?

    A.Because I suffered from headaches.

B.Because I had bad memories of PE classes.

C.Because I had to watch a large crowd exercising

D.Because I felt it tiring and no fun

2How does Clayton Rose help people in the gym?

A.He brings out the best in them.

B.He helps them with illness advice

    C.He treats them differently.

    D.He focuses on body perfection.

3What does Clayton Rose like about his job?

    A.The pay he receives

B.The grace and strength it brings.

    C.The comforting power he gives.

D.The disabled people on his side.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.Reasons to go to a gym.

    B.An instructor inspiring confidence.

    C.Exercise with push and inspiration.

D.Rays of hope in the age of narcissism.

  • 23、   Teens and preteens who start the school day really early tend to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That’s the finding of a new study of nearly 30, 000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18. These data are the latest evidence that starting school too early can harm health.

“We know from earlier studies that when school starts too early, kids can’t get the sleep they need,” says Genevieve Gariepy. She works at Mcgill University in Montreal, Canada. Getting too little sleep can put kids at risk for a number of problems. Sleepy teens are more likely to be overweight, to have trouble concentrating and to struggle in school. They also are at higher risk of feeling depressed, using alcohol or drugs and getting in car accidents.

As an epidemiologist (流行病学家), Gariepy is interested in patterns of disease. She studies teen obesityor extreme overweight. In this studyshe wanted to know how earlier school start times might be linked to weight.

“Overweight and obesity in adolescents is a big problem in North America,” she says. The number of overweight kids has grown over the past 30 years. About one in three U. S. and Canadian teens are now overweight or obese. Kids who don’t sleep enough may be at higher risk. So Gariepy decided to find more about the impact of school start times.

Her team collected start times of 362 Canadian schools and found that among “6 to 10” graders, those who started school earlier tended to be slightly heavier for their height. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was linked, on average, to a slightly lower weight among students who were the same sex, age and height. But it’s not clear that changing school start time would help heavier kids lose weight. To know for sure, researchers would want to compare the same kids before and after changing to a later school start time.

1What is the function of the first paragraph?

    A.To introduce the main topic.

    B.To show concern for teenagers

C.To show the importance of the study.

D.To offer advice on school starting time.

2What does Gariepy want to find out in her research?

A.How to rid adolescents of being overweight.

B.The links between school start times and teen obesity.

C.Why more and more students are becoming obese.

D.The most suitable sleep time for school students.

3What can we infer about the study of Gariepy and her team?

A.A 10-minute delay is enough. B.Schools may value its conclusion.

C.Its conclusion is reliable. D.More work remains to be done

4What can be a suitable title of this text?

A.Experts Worry about the Health of Adolescents.

    B.Overweight Becomes Common among teenagers.

C.Study Links Weight to School Starting Time.

D.Students Tend to Sleep Less Than Before.

  • 24、   What is a book nowadays in a world of Kindles and iPads? Traditional publishers are traveling a long and confusing road into the digital future. Here's the conventional wisdom about publishing: People expect e-books to be cheaper than physical books, and that drives down prices. But the story's not that simple. For one thing, digital publishers have the same problem that traditional publishers do:piracy(盗版).

It turns out, though, that some publishers are doing pretty well despite the piracy problem. "We've had an amazing year," says Sourcebooks President Dominique Raccah. "Last year was the best year in the company's history. This year we beat that, which I didn't think was even possible."Raccah adds that her company is doing well because of digital publishing.

It turns out there are some huge advantages-at least for publishers. A big one: The price of an e-book isn't fixed the way it is with physical books. Ten years ago, a publisher would have sent out its books to the bookstore with the price stamped on the cover. After that, it was done - the publisher couldn't put a book on sale to sell more copies.

"The exciting thing about digital books is that we actually get to test and price differently, " Raccah says. That's what American publisher Little, Brown and Company did with Robert Dallek's book An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy. In the middle of November, Little, Brown and Company dropped the price from $ 9. 99 to $ 2. 99 for 24 hours. That sparks sales; it gets people talking about it," says Terry Adams, a publisher with Little, Brown and Company.

If you read the new e-book 40 Years of Queen, youwill find it full of links. Links to iTunes, where you can buy the music you've been reading about. That's another huge advantage of e-books:Publishers can sell you things inside your book.

There's still one big problem putting pressure on publishers. "We actually don't have a good gifting tradition yet for e-books," says Raccah. Despite all the advances in reading technology, physical books are still the best Christmas presents.

【1】How does Raccah feel about her company's achievement this year?

    A.It's really disappointing.

    B.It's less than satisfactory.

    C.It's just what she predicted.

    D.It's far beyond her expectations.

【2】Why does the author mention publishing 10 years ago?

A.To stress it had its own advantage.

B.To show its marketing was not flexible.

C.To complain about the changing prices of books.

D.To indicate the unpopularity of physical books.

【3】What do we know about An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy?

A.It was written by John F. Kennedy.

    B.It caused disagreements among buyers.

C.It was sold at a huge discount for one day.

D.It was sold at a different price every week.

【4】What can you do while reading the new e-book 40 Years of Queen?

A.Buy items mentioned in the book.

B.Find links to other relevant books.

    C.Get some background information.

D.Listen to music in the book for free.
