21、 China-born filmmaker Chloé Zhao made history at the Golden Globe Awards, becoming the first woman of Asian descent (血统) and second woman ever to win the best director award in the Golden Globes’ 78-year history.
Many, including actors and critics, congratulated the director on social media. “The film is patient, open and full of sympathy, motivated by a desire to wander and observe rather than to judge or explain,” Korean American actor Daniel Dae Kim wrote on Twitter. Barbra Streisand, the first woman who had won Golden Globe for best director in 1984, said “It’s about time! Congratulations Chloé! Well deserved!” in a Twitter post.
Nomadland was adapted from a 2017 non-fiction book, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. The film stars two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand as an out-of-work woman who packs her van and sets off from her small town to travel around the vast landscape of the American West, exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad (游牧民).
Zhao’s first film—Songs My Brothers Taught Me—was shot when she was a student at New York University. In 2017, Zhao directed, wrote and produced her second film The Rider. In all her three films, non-actors were cast to play fictionalized versions of themselves. It a techniques he originally adopted out of economic necessity after film school but one she has used often for its realism.
Building on her success, she will develop an original futuristic sci-fi western inspired by Dracula for Universal Pictures. Her next project is the highly expected Marvel Cinematic Universe Installment The Eternals. 22、 In 2003, Mary Marggraff was a 47-year-old California mother, devoted to school committees and car pool schedules. But after losing her trusty notebook and buying a new one, she had an inspiration. “It was blank,” says Marggraff, now 64. “What else could I fill it with?” Soon she was thinking about her childhood love of flying, and next thing she knew, she determined to register in flight school. “In my first class, all the students were single men half my age. I felt like a housemother attending a fraternity (兄弟会), but I loved it too much to walk away.” she says.
Marggraff earned her first pilot’s license in 2005. Six years and four additional licenses later, her addiction to being in the air changed into something grander: a desire to go to space. To move closer to her starry dreams, Marggraff got a part-time job as a mission support representative at Virgin Galactic, Richard Branson’s commercial space line. In that role, she attended space-related gatherings where she educated people about the future of universe voyages. Though space tourism isn’t quite a reality yet, Marggraff has already begun space training in expectation of being on one of Virgin’s early flights. “I’ve completed acceleration force exercises,” she says, “which require getting inside a machine, spinning around at 2,500 miles per hour, and trying not to black out.”
Marggraff’s training has meant more than getting her wings — it’s expanded her sense of what the future may hold. “It turns out I’m capable of much more than I imagined,” she says. “I used to think it’d be a miracle if I got my first license. Now I’ve completed nearly 1,000 hours of flight! I'm rotten in the kitchen and I burn anything I iron, but if you need someone to land a plane, call me.”

23、Brown rice is a tough sale when offered next to white. Despite the fact that brown rice is healthier, people prefer white rice because they think it just tastes better, just like folks opt for white bread instead of whole wheat. White rice and brown rice begin as the same thing—they come from the same grain, after all. But white rice is different from brown rice in terms of processing.
When rice is first harvested, it is washed, and the outer covering is removed from the grains. At this point, what you’re left with is brown rice. It still has several thin layers of bran coating the grain. To get white rice from that grain, it also has to be milled and polished down, removing the bran. That is why brown rice is a whole grain. It contains all parts of the grain, including the fibrous bran, the nutritious germ and endosperm. White rice has had the bran, the germ, much of the fiber, vitamins and other nutrients removed.
One cup of cooked brown rice contains 4 g of fiber and 5 g of protein, while one cup of cooked white rice contains only 1 g of fiber and 4 g of protein. But fiber isn’t the only benefit of brown rice. Studies have found that it can reduce the risk of diabetes.
One of the reasons white rice has soared in popularity is that it’s easier to cook. Not only does it take less time because the fibrous bran has been removed, but it turns out with a soft, delicious result more often than not. What makes brown rice so hard to prepare is the fact that you have to cook it long enough to soften the bran, but not so long that the inner grain turns mushy. This is tricky, but it’s not impossible. There are many foolproof methods you can use. One is to get a rice cooker, but if you’re not up for another appliance on your kitchen counter, there are other options.
