21、 When my 8-month-old cries, I ask him if he’s hungry, or wet or just needs a hug.
“Babububuu,” he says.
What I need is a baby cry translator. That’s just what a team of researchers say they’ve developed.
“Experienced nurses or pediatricians (儿科医师) can identify why baby is crying because they have experience, says Lichuan Liu, a professor of electrical engineering at Northern Illinois University, who conducted the research.” We talked to them, and they mentioned that based on the cry’s’ sound there’re’ some clues (线索).”
So Liu set out to identify the features of cries that can help mark them as expressions of pain or discomfort. These features include differences in pitch (音高) and frequency. The team then developed an algorithm (算法) based on automatic speech recognition to detect and identify these features. This “cry language recognition algorithm” was trained on recordings of baby cries taken from a hospital. It uses compressed sensing, a process that reconstructs a signal based on incomplete data. It can identify a baby cry against a background of, say, adult speech or loud television sounds. By classifying different cry features, like pitch, the algorithm can suggest whether the cry is due to sickness or pain, and identify the degree of urgency.
The team had experienced pediatric care providers assess forty-eight baby cry recordings for probable cause of crying hunger, tiredness, etc. They then compared these to the algorithm’s assessments. The algorithm agreed with the humans 70% of the time. Generally, so-called “uncommon cry signals”—signs of pain or sickness—are high-pitched and very loud compared to ordinary crying.
Liu and her team continue to train the technology for greater accuracy. They also plan to add more features, like the ability to identify and classify movement and facial expressions. This could help give more detailed reading of baby’s emotional (情感的) and physical state. They also hope to begin human trials in the near future.
【1】The author mentions the 8-month-old child to ________.
A.draw attention to baby cries B.prove baby cries are common
C.lead in a translator for baby cries D.show the use of cry translators
【2】What inspired Lichuan Liu’s idea of doing the study?
A.Pediatric care workers’ words. B.The pediatricians’ strong requests.
C.Her own nursing experiences. D.Her doubts about the previous research.
【3】What did the researchers do in the study?
A.They collected baby cries from big hospitals.
B.They got 48 baby cry recordings evaluated.
C.They created an automatic speech recognition.
D.They analyzed cry features with compressed sensing.
【4】What can we know about Liu’s cry language recognition algorithm?
A.It has been widely used in daily life.
B.It’s mainly meant for hungry cry signals.
C.It has been proved effective on babies.
D.It’s only been tested on recorded cries now.
22、For decades, climate scientists have named hurricanes and ranked them according to severity. “Naming and categorizing heat waves is also a must,” states a newly formed international union, called the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance. “Hurricanes get attention because they cause obvious physical damage,” says Jennifer Marlon, a climate scientist at Yale University. Heat waves, however, have less evident effects, since the primary damage is to human health.
Heat waves kill more people in the United States than any other weather-related disaster. Data from the National Weather Service show that from 1986 to 2019, there were 4,257 deaths as a result of heat. By comparison, there were fewer deaths by floods(2,907), tornadoes(2,203) or hurricanes(1,405) over the same period. What’s more, climate change is increasing the possibility of high temperature events worldwide, getting tens of thousands of people dying each year because of heat.
Some populations are particularly easily harmed by high heat, including people over 65 and those with potential medical conditions. Historical racial discrimination also places minority communities at higher risk. Due to housing policies, communities of color are more likely to live in urban areas, heat islands which lack the green spaces that help cool down neighborhoods.
Part of the naming and ranking process will include defining exactly what a heat wave is. No single definition currently exists. Without a universally accepted definition of a heat wave, “We don't have a common understanding of the danger we face,” says Aaron Bernstein, an expert of the new group. “Defined categories for heat waves could help local officials better prepare to address potential health problems in the face of rising temperatures. And naming and categorizing heat waves could increase public awareness of the health risks caused by these silent killers.”
The union is in ongoing conversations with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Meteorological Organization and other institutions to develop a standard naming and ranking practice.
【1】What do we know about the heat wave in America?
A.It causes most serious physical damage.

D.Measures should be taken to prevent them.
23、 Two motorists saved the life of a good man who had moments earlier helped them.
Victor, 61, stopped his pickup along an interstate highway in western Wisconsin to help two stranded women change a flat tire. Minutes later, his life was in their hands.
Sara Berg, and her cousin, Lisa, were headed home Saturday night on Interstate 94 when they heard an awful noise. They were somewhere between Menomonie and Eau Claire when they pulled to the side of the road with a flat tire-something neither knew how to fix. Ann showed up and asked whether they needed help. “We were so grateful.” Berg said. “Nowadays, nobody ever really stops to offer their help. It's kind of scary sometimes, because you really don't know what you're getting into.”
Victor is the type of person who gives you 100 percent and worries about himself later. When Victor finished, Berg thanked him and they shook hands. Berg recalled Victor's farewell words to her: “Someone up above always puts me in the right place at the right time.”
And then they parted. Victor and his wife puffed back onto the interstate. Seconds later, Berg followed. Less than a quarter mile down the road, Berg noticed Victor's red truck pulled over. She passed it and then pulled over herself, figuring the couple may have forgotten something. No sooner had she gotten out of her car when she saw Victor's wife waving anxiously at passing motorists. She called out to Berg that her husband was having a heart attack. Berg, a certified nursing assistant trained in CPR, jumped into the truck. Victor had no pulse and wasn't breathing. Berg began chest compressions. Lisa called 911. Emergency personnel arrived in about five minutes, “but it always feels like forever at a time like that,” Berg said.
“It was a nice twist of fate.” said the doctor who is treating Victor at the Eau Claire hospital.
“We know for sure that the CPR the woman did increased his chances for survival.”
Ann, who was also part of her husband's good luck when she guided their vehicle to the shoulder during his heart attack, is grateful.

24、How to get a good letter of recommendation
Your professors are often asked to write hundreds of letters of recommendation during teaching in colleges. 【1】, they do play a key role in helping employers get an idea of an applicant’s personality, persistence, and passion. Here are four points to keep in mind when it comes to asking for letters of recommendation.
【2】. Ideally, the letter writer will know you well and have plenty of positive things to say without much make-up. But it never hurts to share your personal statement that includes your accomplishments and passions. After all, it’s you that know how to let your highlights stand out.
Don’t tell your professor what to say. This one is a little tricky, because it seems to contradict the tip above. 【3】, but avoid telling him exactly what to write. Professors know how to pen an effective letter of recommendation well.
Don’t ask for a letter at the last minute. Rule of thumb: Give the professor at least a few months’ notice. Remember, your professor will spend quite a while composing the letter of recommendation, so express your request in a respectful, appreciative and thoughtful way. A last minute request will annoy the professor, and it may also lead to a sub- standard letter. 【4】.
Express your gratitude. A thoughtful letter of recommendation takes time. 【5】. Most professors write dozens of recommendations, if not more. Be sure to let them know that you appreciate their time and effort. Don’t risk ending up with a regret by forgetting to send a handwritten note with a sincere thank you.
A.Nobody wins in such a hurry
B.Expose a real yourself accordingly
C.Maintain a good relationship with them
D.And chances are you aren’t the only one asking
E.Give the professor a broad outline about your request
F.While these letters may not be as important as test scores
G.Because the employers care much about the recommendation
